Karahé Beach Hotel, Manuel Antonio

Kimkim team favorite · 4.4 (25 reviews) · Standard
Simple, no-frills hotel on the beach with an open-air restaurant and outdoor pool right on the sand.

Overview

Karahé Beach Hotel is a unique property in that it has direct beach access—one of the few in Manuel Antonio. The hotel opened in 1980 as one of the first accommodations in the area and is known for its exceptionally kind and helpful staff. The area's main (and busy) road splits the property in half, so part of the grounds sit in the hills and the other on the beach. Guests can enjoy the lovely tropical gardens, an open-air restaurant, and an outdoor pool leading right to the beach.

Pros
  • The property has direct, private beach access—a surprisingly unique trait in Manuel Antonio, as many accommodations aren't beachfront.
  • Some units are up on the hillside with ocean views, whereas others sit a few steps from the beach, so your toes will hit the sand shortly after leaving your room.
  • The hotel is an area staple as one of the first hotels in Manuel Antonio and has been in business for over 40 years.
  • The on-site restaurant/bar, outdoor swimming pool, and lush gardens are all directly on the beach.
  • Some rooms are accessible.
Cons
  • Not all rooms have ocean views, nor are all set on the beach, and the budget-friendly rooms sit atop a steep hill, which can be challenging to navigate for some.
  • The property is fairly simple, and standard rooms aren't worth booking.
  • The main road cuts through the property and is very busy, so keep in mind that you might need to cross the street to access some of the common areas.

Authenticity

The hotel offers a different vibe depending on which room you choose. If you opt for one of the hillside villas, you'll enjoy a bit of jungle privacy with incredible ocean views. If you'd rather stay beachfront, you can wake up to the sound of the waves and relax in the property's tropical gardens.

Location

Karahé Beach Hotel is one of the few properties directly on the area's primary beach, so daily sunsets are a given. However, the main road cuts through the hotel, so many units require crossing a busy street to get to the pool, beach, and the on-site restaurant. Still, you'll be walking distance to the area's main beach and the national park.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Standard rooms are set atop a reasonably steep hill, are pretty basic, and feel outdated. If you're staying at this property, we recommend upgrading to a hillside villa (if you're OK with crossing the road to the beach) or a superior beachfront room. These have a much better feel with wood and stone decor, plus exceptional ocean views or direct beach access. Beachfront rooms also have patios or balconies with hammocks.

Wildlife

You're likely to spot a wide range of Costa Rican wildlife at the hotel, but the more reclusive animals are more likely to be spotted across the road at the hillside villas. Travelers have spotted sloths, monkeys, toucans, and more on the property, and the beachside pool often has a group of iguanas hanging out.

Amenities

Karahé Beach Hotel has a moderately sized pool, with an adjacent hot tub, located near the beach. There's no on-site spa, but in-room beauty treatments and massages are available through a local partner. Travelers with limited mobility will want to book rooms on the coastal side of the complex, as the rooms on the hillside require a steep climb.

Family-Friendliness

The hotel is very popular with families, in large part due to being one of the few beachfront options in the area. Two children up to eight years old can stay for free in rooms occupied by their parents. Villas and the Beach Front rooms are the best options, offering multiple beds for up to four travelers, as well as cribs on request. Most previous travelers with families have preferred to stay in rooms on the beachside half of the property.

Other Highlights

The open-air restaurant is right on the beach. Thatched roofing creates a relaxed beach vibe and a great spot to have a drink while watching the sunset. Here, you'll enjoy your daily breakfast or choose other meals featuring Costa Rican and Peruvian food. Adults can also grab a drink from the hotel's full-service bar.

Make sure to get a Beach Front room ( and not one next to the road). Our pickup time for San Jose got delayed. For one hour.
The staff of the hotel helped to find out where the driver was.
They arranged for a driver who took us a few miles and connected us to a van who drove us to San Jose.
The driver of the van was an excellent driver!

This hotel is split into 2 main parts so if you do book here, make sure that you get a room on the ocean side of the resort, so you do not have to cross the busy road to access the restaurant and beach. From the balcony of our room, we could see the beach and could also view the on-site restaurant and pool. My kids were absolutely in love with the resort pet cat, which was really friendly, and my daughter would have taken home had we let her. There was also many other animals that were right on the resort grounds (capuchin monkeys, lizards, agouti, toucans, etc.)-- so much so that we didn't think it was necessary to go on a nature walk through the reserve park, as all the same animals were right on our resort. The only downside to this resort was the prices of the items on the on-site restaurant menu--They were shockingly high, so we made an effort to eat at other local restaurants. Shout out to the Magic Bus, a local eatery right off the beach that we ate at twice, it was that good.

Authenticity & Character
It was evident that the hotel has done a lot to retain the natural vibe of the area. There was a significant amount of wildlife that could be viewed on the resort grounds, so much so, that the local troop of capuchin were present on the grounds and around the restaurant almost all day long.
Location
This resort was right on the beach and close to a few other Manuel Antonio resorts, but of note is that this hotel is at the bottom of a great big hill that all the resorts are on, so many restaurants, etc. are a hike along a busy roadway. Walking along the beach and popping in and out of the other resort grounds was easier than accessing them from the street.

When we first checked in, the sink in our room was damaged and there was water all over the floor, but management jumped to get it fixed and it was repaired by the time we returned from lunch. Other than that, the balcony had a fantastic view, and the beds were soft and clean.

My stay at Karahé Beach Hotel in Manuel Antonio was a mix of experiences. The location was fantastic, and the breakfast was delicious. Some bugs in the room, but that's kind of unavoidable in the rainforest. It can be a bit of a hike getting around the property

Location is mixed. Access to the beach is fantastic. But getting to restaurants was a bit of a pain - generally a 10-15 minute walk along a road not well suited to walking.
