Historic and vibrant hostel/hotel with modern rooms, a lively bar, and two large common areas

Overview

LATROUPE La Granja is a simple yet unique accommodation that combines a hostel and a hotel. The building was constructed in 1891 by a local architect and once housed the mythic Café La Granja, which opened in 1926 and soon became the city's cultural epicenter. Maintaining the name and spirit of the literary café, the property offers private and shared rooms, each uniquely designed with a blend of old and new, classic and industrial elements. Guests can enjoy two large common areas, La Granja and El Txoko, which offer opportunities for socializing, eating, and drinking, with a bar and kitchen available.

Pros
  • You'll stay in a historic building and site with a unique character that reflects the city's rich culture and history.
  • Though you'll find the typical shared hostel rooms here, the private options are bright, spacious, and stylish.
  • All the rooms have comfortable beds, air conditioning, and private bathrooms with showers and toiletries.
  • Families and groups will appreciate the larger rooms, many with bunk beds that kids tend to love.
  • There are two large common areas, La Granja and El Txoko, perfect for relaxing, working, socializing with other guests if you'd like, and eating meals (there's a shared kitchen).
  • Ignore the word "hostel" here, as the interiors are beautifully decorated with a mix of old and new, with both industrial and classic styles that pay homage to the building's history.
Cons
  • Keep in mind that this is a hostel and hotel in one, so it's not the right choice if you prefer a traditional hotel.
  • And because of the shared room options and hostel vibe, noise levels can vary depending on other guests and the activities happening in the common areas.

Authenticity

LATROUPE La Granja embraces the history and culture of its location, preserving the spirit of the iconic Café La Granja that opened in 1926. The building, designed in 1891 by local architect Severino Achúcarro, combines the industrial Bilbao aesthetic with traditional architecture and colorful wood carpentry. The interior decor is a fusion of old and new, reflecting the city's rich cultural heritage and creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Other Highlights

El Txoko is a multipurpose basement for socializing, featuring exposed brick walls, old wood, and sturdy materials like steel and concrete. The bar, with its references to the city's old shipyards and materials, serves as the epicenter and soul of the property. In addition, a multipurpose room has a TV and sound system and adapts depending on the time of day, providing a space for meals, complete with a kitchen, and pop-up events.
