Porto Veneziano hotel, Chania

5.0 (1 reviews) · Standard
The family-run Porto Veneziano offers basic rooms and warm hospitality on the waterfront of Chania’s Venetian harbor.

Overview

The family-run Porto Veneziano first opened its doors 50 years ago and has since become a recognizable staple of Chania’s historic harbor thanks to its prime location on the waterfront. This 57-room hotel was renovated 10 years ago and although the rooms can feel a bit old-school and compact, it does shine with its prime sea-view rooms. The Porto Veneziano is best for single travelers, business folks, or small groups of friends looking for an easy and basic place to sleep while they explore Chania.

Pros
  • The location of the Porto Veneziano can’t be beat, as it’s on Chania’s waterfront, just next to the start of the walkway that leads to the lighthouse. Don’t worry if you don’t want to walk to the lighthouse, as you can see it from various rooms and the restaurant as well.
  • The Porto Veneziano has that holy grail of Chania’s Old Town: its own parking lot.
  • The hotel has been run by the same family since it first opened and it retains those qualities of warmth, personality, and hospitality that often mark a family hotel. The staff here feels like family, both with each other and the guests, which adds a nice quality to the experience here.
  • This is a Green Key hotel thanks to its efforts of maintaining environmental sustainability, such as by offering guests bikes to use for exploring Chania.
  • The Porto Veneziano is open year-round, which makes it a decent option for off-season travelers and those coming to Crete for business.
Cons
  • The standard economy and double rooms are quite compact, so anyone who isn’t traveling solo might be more comfortable in a triple room or one of the suites.
  • The hotel has been around for 50 years and while it was renovated 10 years ago, it still feels a bit old school. Those looking for something more sleek and modern or tied to ancient history may not find what they want here, but for those who appreciate the charm of an old world time capsule, this could be a great fit.
  • Some of the rooms look out back towards the city, so if you’re in the mood for a relaxing sea view, be sure to book one of the many rooms facing the harbor.

Authenticity

The Porto Veneziano maintains a more recent but equally important historical era of Chania: the 20th century. The hotel has been open for 50 years and it’s been run by the same family since then. While the Porto Veneziano has moved into the 21st century with features like Wifi, flat screen TVs, and an eco-friendly heating and cooling system, it still feels like an old-school Greek hotel thanks to its design and family-run feeling. Due to its prime location and long-standing history, the Porto Veneziano is a reliable classic of Chania’s harbor.

Location

If you’re looking for a waterfront location with easy access to Chania’s lighthouse, harbor, and Old Town, then there’s no better place than the Porto Veneziano. It’s situated on the east side of the harbor, which is a bit calmer and quieter in the high season, as the majority of waterfront restaurants and bears are on the other side. The entrance to the lighthouse walkway is just a minute away, while you can be in either the heart of Old Town or the beginning of the new center in about 10 minutes walking.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The Porto Veneziano has 57 rooms. The more standard rooms like the economy and double can feel a bit tight, so consider those only if you’re solo or just using the hotel to sleep. The suites all offer more space or check out a sea view room, as the view can help open up the space. All of the rooms have balconies and a view, which ranges from city to partial or full sea. Suites and the triple room offer sofa bed or rollaway bed options for more than two guests, while all the rooms include Cocomat mattresses and a pillow menu.
