Scandic Byparken, Bergen

4.1 (8 reviews) · Mid-Range
Simple Swedish chain hotel with modern rooms and free breakfast, close to Bergen's cultural attractions

Overview

This renovated hotel takes up a historic brick building on a bustling corner in Bergen's city center, but guests can find some solace at the park next door, called Byparken. The 144 rooms and suites are decorated with hardwood-style floors and Scandi-style wood furnishings that are accented with bold pops of color. The spacious lobby has cushioned sectionals, tables with outlets for remote workers, and a 24-hour "Barception" for drinks and snacks. An award-winning breakfast buffet is included in the room rate, and guests have access to bike rentals and a nearby fitness center.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • Modern rooms have Scandi-style decor and mini-fridges for up to four guests, while upgraded rooms, like the Junior Suites, have bathrobes and coffeemakers.
  • The central location is next door to a pretty park and walking distance to Bergen's top attractions, as well as the train station.
  • Guests have access to a standout free breakfast buffet with healthy and organic options.
Cons
  • The hotel doesn't have a restaurant for lunch and dinner, but drinks and snacks are sold in the lobby (including wine, beer, and basic cocktails).
  • Standard rooms don't have kettles and may have lackluster views of the neighboring building.
  • There isn't a fitness center on-site, but staff will provide free fitness center passes to a center across the street, and you can rent bikes at reception.

Authenticity

Scandic Byparken, much like other Scandic properties, does a good job of attracting a mix of international guests as well as ages due to its many room types and conveniences. The spacious lobby gets plenty of action thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows that bring in natural light, and there are several seating areas from cushy sectionals to contemporary chairs and stools. This is a modern chain hotel and you won't find much charm or character in its walls, but the minimalist, Scandi-style decor and convenient location make it a popular spot for families and business travelers.

Location

The hotel sits on a corner in Bergen's city center, next to a spacious park called Byparken with a large pond, fountain, tree-lined walking paths, and lawns that host events during the summer months. Other attractions within a short stroll include two art museums and the Grieghallen concert hall. More of Bergen's sites can be reached in under 15 minutes on foot, like Bryggen, the UNESCO-listed wharf, and the Fish Market. The central train station and tram with regular service to and from the airport are also within 10 minutes on foot, or you can catch the airport bus, which stops right next to the hotel. Parking for a daily fee is available at the nearby Grieg Parking Garage.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The 144 modern rooms start with the Standard category, available in a variety of bed configurations that can accommodate solo travelers, couples, and groups of three or four guests with either twin beds or sofa beds. All rooms have Scandi-style furnishings, bedside chargers, working desks, and either carpet or wood-style floors. They also have mini-fridges and walk-in showers with basic Swedish-brand toiletries. Couples may want to opt for the Superior rooms or suites that come with more space and potentially better views, as well as kettles with tea and coffee, and more bath products (including conditioner and bath lotion). Suites also come with bathrobes.

Amenities

The hotel is proud to mention that it once won a local contest for having the best breakfast in Bergen. The complimentary spread includes hot and cold items, including an omelet station and organic fruits and vegetables. The 24-hour "Barception" and lobby shop sells snacks, espresso, beer, wine, basic cocktails, and essentials that you may have forgotten to pack. There's no gym on-site, but guests can use the facilities at a nearby fitness center. You can also rent bikes through the front desk.

Family-Friendliness

Families are welcome at Scandic Byparken, with plenty of room configurations for larger groups, including Family options that sleep up to four and the large Presidential Suite that sleeps six. Kids 12 and under stay free with an adult, and neighboring rooms are available at a discount for families with teens. Reception has a supply of crayons and coloring activities on offer, and there are plenty of kid-friendly options at breakfast and available at the shop.
