Skuggi Hotel by Keahotels, Reykjavík

kimkim team favorite
4.4 (37 reviews) Mid-Range
Modern artsy hotel with a bar, lounge, and parking, close to dining and shopping in Reykjavík's center

Overview

Skuggi is a modern hotel that takes its inspiration from Icelandic photographer Ragnar Axelsson, known for his black-and-white photos of the country's landscapes and people. Located in a lively neighborhood near downtown Reykjavík, guests can easily walk to cultural landmarks like Hallgrímskirkja, the waterfront, and the shops and eateries along Laugavegur. Rooms follow the monochrome scheme (textiles and furnishings in black, white, and gray tones), with layouts varying in size. Guests can enjoy breakfast (included) in the dining area, unwind in the lounge or bar, and take advantage of the on-site parking.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • Skuggi Hotel is centrally located, steps away from Laugavegur and resides on the improved Hverfisgata, both filled with street art, galleries, boutiques, eateries, and bars.
  • Underground parking is available for those traveling with a rental.
  • A complimentary breakfast buffet is available, with past kimkim travelers giving it decent marks, and there's a bar for cocktails, wine, and beer.
  • The shuttle bus for Keflavík Airport conveniently stops right around the corner from the hotel.
Cons
  • Given its monochromatic color scheme, the property may feel dark, though some guests will appreciate the artsy style choice.
  • Breakfast starts at 7 am, slightly later than some travelers might prefer.

Authenticity

Skuggi Hotel embraces a modern black, white, and gray aesthetic inspired by Icelandic photographer Ragnar Axelsson's black-and-white images of Iceland and Icelanders. Additionally, English quotes from his book, "Behind the Mountains," are stamped on walls above headboards, adding a bit of whimsy to each unit.

Location

Situated on the revamped Hverfisgata street, Skuggi Hotel is in a prime spot for exploring the city and accessing numerous shops, cafés, trendy bars, restaurants, and street art. It's a 2-minute walk to Reykjavík's main shopping street, Laugavegur, a 10-minute walk to the iconic Hallgrimskirkja church, and only 5 minutes to reach the Sculpture & Shore Walk (about another 4 to reach "Sun Voyager"). Around the corner (2-minute walk) is a bus stop that takes travelers to Keflavík Airport.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Rooms at Skuggi Hotel are sleek and done up in the property's color palette: black, white, and gray. Beds are plush, floor space is minimal—typical of European properties—and decor is minimalist, focusing on functionality. Blackout shades (for white nights) and rainfall showers are nice features. Note that air-conditioning is non-existent, which shouldn't pose too much of an issue given Iceland's cool climate. However, previous kimkim travelers have shared that their rooms felt a little warm in the summer (small windows can be opened for ventilation).

Superior Rooms sleep up to three guests and have the added touch of bathrobes and slippers, while all rooms are appointed with standard amenities, including in-house bars.

Amenities

A notable feature of Skuggi Hotel is its underground parking, a nice perk for those with vehicles. The hotel also offers an on-site bar serving happy hour drinks from 4 pm to 7 pm daily, adjacent lounge seating with street views, and a simple, complimentary buffet breakfast.

Family-Friendliness

Skuggi Hotel caters primarily to adults and couples, though extra beds are available (subject to availability) for a charge, while cots for kids four and under are free.

Our room was sufficient and offered enough space for two. It was clean and comfortable. I still can't get over not having a top sheet or washcloths. It must be a European thing, and I will remember to pack washcloths. The staff was excellent. When we needed a cab, we just went to the front desk; they pressed a button, and a cab driver arrived in the lobby to pick us up within minutes. Breakfast was included with our stay. There was a variety of cereals, yogurts, meats, and cheeses, wonderful bread including their rye bread, a tasty tuna salad, and I happened to like pickled herring, which was available every morning. They also had hard-boiled eggs and some fruit. It was definitely enough to start your day and get you through.

This appeared to be a contemporary hotel. It had an elevator, a breakfast room, and a place for happy hour, but no food was served after breakfast.
Location
It could have been more centrally located. Reykjavik is a walkable city, but we had severe winds and blowing snow, which made it a little more difficult to walk to the areas we wanted to visit.
Staff
The staff was friendly, kind, and personable, and their English was flawless. I needed medication kept refrigerated, and they accommodated me.

I am a kimkim staff member and stayed at this hotel for one night during my Iceland trip in March.

The rooms are basic but spacious enough to store bigger luggage. My standard double room was equipped with tea and coffee making facilities and a smart TV. From the large windows I had a pretty view over the city. The bathroom has a good size and a walk-in shower. Free shower products are provided.
The hotel has a small on-site bar which is opened in the evenings and serves beer, wine and sodas. Coffee, tea and pastries are provided from 3am in the morning and throughout the whole day. Breakfast is served in buffet style every morning, however I could only benefit from the early morning coffee and breakfast since I had the check-out at 4am.
The hotel's unique feature is their own free parking garage with 28 parking spots and elevator access to each floor. I did not have a rental car, however I consider this a huge advantage as guests can park their car in a safe and dry(!) place and can unload their car in the garage.

I really liked the Skuggi Hotel by Keahotels in Reykjavik. The location was great, very close to many things to walk to. One of the standout points for us was the early check-in they provided after our overnight flight, which was incredibly helpful. They also offered us access to their breakfast, which was very much appreciated as we were exhausted and hungry upon arrival. It was a very welcoming experience, and having breakfast and a nap truly helped us recharge for the rest of our day.
