The Zillers Boutique Hotel, Athens

4.4 (5 reviews) · Comfort
A building designed by celebrated Athens architect Ernst Ziller is now a suave 10-room boutique hotel next to Plaka.

Overview

This 10-room boutique hotel is housed in a building designed by famed architect Ernest Ziller, the force behind the National Theater of Greece, Presidential Mansion, and other notable sites in Athens. Situated just across from the Metropolitan Cathedral bordering Plaka, the Zillers has a rooftop restaurant with a fantastic Acropolis view. Its romantic atmosphere and room setups are perfect for couples and the Acropolis-facing rooms add an extra something special to the stay.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • The rooftop restaurant is chic and cozy with a stellar view of the Acropolis and Metropolitan Cathedral just across the street.
  • Outside-facing rooms all look upon the Acropolis, which makes a stay here more memorable.
  • The central location on Mitropoleos Street puts guests right at the edge of Plaka and within immediate walking distance of Syntagma, Monastiraki and Psyrri.
Cons
  • There's no lobby or reception area, but guests can enjoy the main communal area of the fantastic rooftop restaurant and bar.
  • Interior courtyard rooms don't offer much of a view, so book an Acropolis facing one to get that extra special element.

Authenticity

Ernst Ziller designed this 1895 Neoclassical townhouse, which has been beautifully preserved to offer a slice of Athenian history. Iron-wrought balconies, high ceilings, and huge windows all date back to the original building. Architect and history buffs will have a field day here, as Ziller is one of the most important architects to bring this Neoclassical style to Athens.

Location

The Zillers has a prime location in the heart of Athens' city center on Mitropoleos Street. Wake up to the sounds of the Metropolitan Cathedral bells ringing just across the street, then head out to explore Plaka in under five minutes. The shopping street of Ermou is one block behind the hotel, while Monastiraki Square is five minutes away. The Acropolis is a 10 minute walk and the closest metros of Monastiraki and Syntagma are both five minutes away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hotel's 10 rooms blend the historic with the modern thanks to original touches from the building and 21st century amenities. Hardwood floors, marble bathrooms, and iron-wrought furnishings add to the overall sense of romance and history. The room sizes and layouts are best for couples, solo travelers, or friends, more so than families.

My husband and I really enjoyed Zillers and would stay there again. It had immense charm and character, something we look for when traveling abroad, and a terrific location for easy walking to historic sites. It was informally elegant, as we prefer. The pretty rooftop restaurant breakfast was a highlight of the stay, serving a gorgeous array of foods and treats, with excellent service. We wish we had had dinner there! The only con’s regarding the hotel was the tight hotel room space: though we apparently had the most expensive rooms, there was limited space to walk and especially store our belongings, to the point that we couldn’t really unpack our suitcases due to insufficient closet and bureau capabilities, yet also not adequate room to keep two suitcases open either. We made it work, but this issue was a large drawback and something Tasos should know and discuss with clients in advance.

Authenticity & Character
It’s unique. As a former residence, it retains a warmth while providing a casual elegance and charm.
Location
Close to all historic sites, cafes, and on a pretty square.
Staff
Excellent customer service all around.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Only big problem Re comfort, as stated, was the poor storage space in the rooms.

Nadia and the rest of the staff were so friendly - and in a very authentic way! They made us feel so welcome and comfortable.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The room set up was unique, but a little funky/awkward from a user-friendly standpoint. But loved the balcony!
