Rincón de la Vieja

Welcome to Costa Rica! After you touch down in Liberia, a travel representative will be waiting for you in the airport. The chaperone will provide you with an information package that contains an in-depth travel itinerary, complete with pick up times and contact information, vouchers for services, and other important documents.

Once you are ready, depart toward the Rincón de La Vieja mountain area, which is 1 hour away. Your adventure lodge is located on the edge of the national park. The hotel is surrounded by the tropical, dry forest, which is the common landscape in this area.

Check in to your hotel, and the rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Visit the horses if you have time, or simply relax and refresh by the swimming pool. There are also some trails around the property you can explore on your own.

Day 2: Guided tour of Rincón de la Vieja National Park

Wake up and enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Then, your trip into the tropics will begin with the exploration of an active volcano on an engaging trail that winds throughout the dry forest. Altitude fluctuates on your 3-hour walk through Rincón de la Vieja National Park, which is filled with many different landscapes. The “Las Pailas” section of the park is the perfect place to witness the power of an active volcano. Check out the bubbling volcanic mud, which allows you to see the underground activity coming to the surface, due to the energy given off by the volcano.

The trail is a loop of about 3 miles, and you can find a wide variety of vegetation, along with both primary, and secondary forests that are home to beautiful mammals, such as raccoons, white-nosed coatis, Central American agoutis, armadillos, white-tailed deers, tapirs, and three species of monkeys. Some of the most common birds are the blue-crowned motmot, crested guan, and emerald toucanet.

As you continue along the trail, take note of the different displays of volcanic activity that will make it impossible to forget that you are discovering an active volcano region. Steam and sulfur pour out of the yellow- and rust-colored ground at natural fumaroles. Clay and coffee-colored pools bubble with boiling-hot volcanic water. Smooth, gray volcanic mud froths and explodes upward at the calderas. Keep an eye out for the beautiful, little rushing rivers and small waterfalls crisscrossing the trails, as well.

Return to the hotel after the hike, and the rest of the day is yours to enjoy the hotel facilities.

Your playground is the spectacular White River Canyon, formed by water erosion over millions of years.

Following the activity, the afternoon is yours to enjoy. Visit the hotel’s natural spa and enjoy a relaxing and rejuvenating skin treatment. Indulge in a full-body volcanic mud masque, and wait until it dries before submerging yourself in the hot springs.
