Day 1: Arrival in Liberia and transfer to Rincón de la Vieja
Welcome to Costa Rica! After you touch down in Liberia, a travel representative will be waiting for you in the airport. The chaperone will provide you with an information package that contains an in-depth travel itinerary, complete with pick up times and contact information, vouchers for services, and other important documents.
Once you are ready, depart toward the Rincón de La Vieja mountain area, which is 1 hour away. Your adventure lodge is located on the edge of the national park. The hotel is surrounded by the tropical, dry forest, which is the common landscape in this area.
Check in to your hotel, and the rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Visit the horses if you have time, or simply relax and refresh by the swimming pool. There are also some trails around the property you can explore on your own.
Day 2: Guided tour of Rincón de la Vieja National Park
Wake up and enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Then, your trip into the tropics will begin with the exploration of an active volcano on an engaging trail that winds throughout the dry forest. Altitude fluctuates on your 3-hour walk through Rincón de la Vieja National Park, which is filled with many different landscapes. The “Las Pailas” section of the park is the perfect place to witness the power of an active volcano. Check out the bubbling volcanic mud, which allows you to see the underground activity coming to the surface, due to the energy given off by the volcano.
The trail is a loop of about 3 miles, and you can find a wide variety of vegetation, along with both primary, and secondary forests that are home to beautiful mammals, such as raccoons, white-nosed coatis, Central American agoutis, armadillos, white-tailed deers, tapirs, and three species of monkeys. Some of the most common birds are the blue-crowned motmot, crested guan, and emerald toucanet.
As you continue along the trail, take note of the different displays of volcanic activity that will make it impossible to forget that you are discovering an active volcano region. Steam and sulfur pour out of the yellow- and rust-colored ground at natural fumaroles. Clay and coffee-colored pools bubble with boiling-hot volcanic water. Smooth, gray volcanic mud froths and explodes upward at the calderas. Keep an eye out for the beautiful, little rushing rivers and small waterfalls crisscrossing the trails, as well.
Return to the hotel after the hike, and the rest of the day is yours to enjoy the hotel facilities.
Day 3: Ziplining tour over White River Canyon
Greet the day with breakfast at the hotel. Then, it's off to one of the best ziplines in the country. Fly through the trees, rappel, rock climb, swing like Tarzan, and cross hanging bridges over a narrow river canyon. Your playground is the spectacular White River Canyon, formed by water erosion over millions of years.
Following the activity, the afternoon is yours to enjoy. Visit the hotel’s natural spa and enjoy a relaxing and rejuvenating skin treatment. Indulge in a full-body volcanic mud masque, and wait until it dries before submerging yourself in the hot springs.
Chat with a local specialist who can help organize your trip.
Day 4: Transfer to Tamarindo Beach
Following breakfast at the hotel, a driver will transfer you to the beautiful, white-sand Tamarindo Beach, which is located 1.5 hours from Rincón de la Vieja. The driver will pick you up around mid-morning and take you straight to the beach. Your hotel is a boutique property that is just a 5-minute walk from the beach and is close to everything in town.
The afternoon is at your leisure to explore the beach and enjoy the warm waters of the tropical Pacific Coast. The waters are perfect for a swim, as well as various watersports, like surfing or snorkeling. The beautiful sunsets of Tamarindo are a sight not soon to be forgotten.
Day 5: Free day - Tamarindo Beach
After breakfast, the day is yours to enjoy the beach and explore the coasts at your own pace. There are several shops in town that offer surfboard, bicycle, ATV, and small golf cart rentals, so you can explore the nearby beaches and towns with ease.
Enjoy a long walk and explore the beautiful white sands of Langosta Beach south of Tamarindo, or walk in the other direction and head to Playa Grande, which you can reach after crossing the Tamarindo estuary, with the help of a floating taxi.
Once a quiet fishing town, Tamarindo is now the area’s most developed and accessible tourist town in the area. Located on the central west coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, Tamarindo offers visitors of every budget a chance to experience the region’s unspoiled beaches and incredible biodiversity. Despite the town’s recent and ongoing development, it retains the laid-back vibe that is so characteristic of the region.
Day 6: Beach day and catamaran sailing tour
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, followed by some free time along the beach.
In the afternoon, board sunset sailing tour on a 66-foot modern catamaran. The boat expedition departs right from the beach. which allows you to walk to the meeting point.
Once onboard the catamaran, a crewmember will give an introductory speech to explain the tour. Begin sailing to one of the most pristine beaches in the area. En route to the secluded beach, be on the lookout for turtles, dolphins, flying fish, and whales.
Snorkeling equipment is then provided, so you can admire the colorful, rocky reefs and look for exotic, underwater marine life. Some of the more common animals seen include tangs, pufferfish, porcupine fish, eel, starfish, stingrays, and seahorses. While you enjoy the bay, the crew prepares a light lunch.
Following lunch, the anchor is lifted, and the sails are raised to start navigating along the bay. Arrive at the final anchor location as the sun nears the horizon, and the sky melts into a collage of stunning colors.
Return to the hotel after the sunset sail, and enjoy your final night in Tamarindo Beach.
Note: This tour is also available in the morning.
