June is the start of summer—and of the high season—in Romania. Temperatures soar and many people flock to the Black Sea coast and to the mountains to cool off. Read on to learn more about traveling to Romania in June.

Weather

June is summer in Romania. Average temperatures across the country in June range between 57° and 80°F (14° and 27°C), but they can get even higher in some places. However, there's also a lot of rain in the forecast—along with May, June is the wettest month of the year. Many travelers are drawn to the beaches and the mountains, but be prepared for rain whatever your activities of choice.

Crowds & Costs

June, along with July and August, is the peak season for travel to Romania. Romanian schools take their summer vacation from mid-June. Warmer temperatures mean that people are drawn to the towns, beaches, and countryside. Everything will be open but there will be crowds at the most popular places. Some hotels book out in June, so plan ahead if you're traveling to particularly popular places in the Carpathian Mountains or along the Romanian Riviera. Day-trippers from Bucharest, Brasov, and further afield also flock to the infamous Bran Castle, of Dracula fame.

Where to Go

To enjoy a European beach vacation, don't overlook Romania. While the Romanian Riviera may not be as famous as beach areas in nearby Croatia or Italy, the long coastline on the Black Sea contains some very attractive beaches with white sand and warm turquoise seas. The ancient city of Constanta, in southeastern Romania, is a good base for exploring the coastline.

You can combine time at the beach with birdwatching in the Danube Delta. This area is among the best-preserved wetlands in Europe and is home to hundreds of bird species; a must for photographers and bird enthusiasts.

What to Do

Hiking and biking in the mountainous Romanian countryside is a favorite activity in the summer, and a good way to escape the heat of lower and coastal areas. The high rainfall in June does mean you should plan your trips well and be prepared, but basing yourself in towns and villages throughout Transylvania or northern Romania (especially the Bucovina region) is a great way of exploring. You can make the most of days with fine weather by hiking or biking between villages, and then retreat to pretty churches, monasteries, and other cultural attractions when it rains. An alternative to the larger, taller Carpathian Mountains is the Macin Mountains, in eastern Romania and near the Danube Delta.

Events in June

Transylvanian International Film Festival, Cluj-Napoca. Held over ten days in late May and early June, this film festival is one of the best in Romania.

International Theatre Festival, Sibiu. This open-air festival in mid-June showcases theater, dance, art, and a variety of music.
