Peru may be famous for its ceviche, but vegetables are a way of life here too—after all, it's home to 3,800 varieties of potatoes alone. Combine this bounty with Lima's renowned food scene, and it's no surprise that vegetarian and vegan eateries abound. Here's a list of the best spots to grab a raw taco, quinoa burger, or a big bowl of cashew pesto pasta, in the trendy Miraflores neighborhood and beyond.

Armónica Café

Armónica Café isn't totally vegetarian—but the big variety of veg-friendly menu options at this Miraflores restaurant makes it worthy of a spot on this list. Delicious vegan pasta dishes like lasagna, Pomodoro, and cashew pesto are on offer, as well as a pleasing quinoa burger served with cocktail potatoes.

There's a solid list of smoothies that mix familiar ingredients—think berries, pineapple, coconut milk, and spinach. Come for breakfast and dive into an acai bowl (or a stack of comforting vegan waffles). And the restaurant's Eastern-inspired decor—Buddha statues and all—drives the funky, feel-good ambiance home.

El Jardín de Jazmín

El Jardín de Jazmín, located in central Miraflores, offers a mix of western and Latin fusion dishes. You'll find a fun and festive menu here, combining global influences in refined and rustic plates. Elevated dishes like grilled mushrooms with vegan mustard sauce share a menu with hearty comfort food like the black-bean burger with bbq sauce.

There are similar á la carte offerings like sandwiches and tacos made with vegan-friendly ingredients like lentils and garbanzos. You can also get a solid flat-bread pizza with no animal products anywhere in sight. El Jardín de Jazmín also has a craft beer selection (though some options, like the Fuller's Honey Dew Beer, are not vegan). Do check their webpage for events such as poetry readings, art exhibits, and live music.

La Verde

La Verde is a 100% vegan restaurant located in the heart of Miraflores. The food here is typical bistro fare, and you'll find items like salads, wraps, sandwiches, quiches, fresh-baked organic bread, vegan waffles, and an assortment of teas and juices. They also serve empanadas, calzones, and a Mexican-inspired bean salad with pico de gallo salsa. The vibe is definitely of the bakery/café variety (there's even an assortment of table games on hand) yet the relatively steep prices will have you thinking you're in an upscale restaurant. One bonus is that La Verde also has a shop selling various food items and organic produce to go.

Raw Café

Raw Café is a small restaurant that, like La Verde, also has an organic store attached. Not all foods on the menu are of the raw persuasion, but there's a wide variety served at breakfast, lunch, tea time, and early dinner. On top of offerings like fresh salads, crackers, raw pizzas and tacos, sandwiches, and wraps, there's also a dessert menu featuring raw cakes (and of course there are plenty of gluten-free options).

The attached store sells superfoods and fresh produce like spirulina, camu camu, blueberries, Peruvian cacao nibs, chia seeds, and maca. Raw Café has a couple locations in the trendy Miraflores neighborhood, and they've expanded to other areas of the city, too.

Veda

Veda is a vegan-friendly restaurant located in the heart of Miraflores. The menu features many Peruvian dishes (think ceviche and papa a la huancaína) with a vegan twist, substituting cashew cheese for dairy and vegetables for seafood. They also offer some international options such as pizza, Thai salads, and pasta with cabbage and garbanzo meatballs. You can even get a grilled tofu steak with basmati rice.

If it's a hot day, be sure to try their all-fruit ice cream without lactose or added sugar. Located right next to a yoga studio, Veda makes for an ideal spot to feed your stomach after feeding your soul. One other note about this restaurant is that they source sustainable produce grown within Peru, and the food is artfully presented.

Veggie Pizza

Rather than creating another run-of-the-mill pizza joint, the owners of Veggie Pizza decided to create a healthier menu that relies on fresh ingredients and low-fat dairy products. The idea was a smash, and in just a few years they've expanded from their original Miraflores location and now have three restaurants in the same neighborhood set in upscale digs and featuring towering wine racks.

But the pizza is the real reason to come. They do thin, honey-crust square pies that range from the traditional Margherita to the kaleidoscopic "Aurora Boreal," which is topped with ricotta cheese, blueberries, pecans, pineapple, and strawberries. They also have some solid appetizers like veggie burgers, tomato soup, and artichoke hearts stuffed with cheese and pesto. They do use dairy here, but you can easily have a full vegan experience by forgoing the cheese.
