Romantic cliffside sanctuary featuring cave suites with caldera views and private balconies

Overview

Nestled in the cliffside village of Imerovigli, Above Blue Suites is a retreat offering stunning views over the Aegean and the Santorini caldera. Guests are just a short stroll from shops and restaurants, and steps from the scenic walking path linking neighboring Fira and Oia. The 11 Cycladic-style cave suites each feature a unique color theme and private terraces, some with tiny plunge pools. Other amenities include a freshwater pool and outdoor bar, in-room spa services, and a daily room-service breakfast.

Kimkim's Take

Pros
  • An address in tiny Imerovigli puts you at Santorini's highest point, offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the island's caldera.
  • The village's many restaurants and shops are within easy strolling distance, and you're steps from a scenic walking path that links the towns of Fira and Oia.
  • Each uniquely decorated cave suite features Cycladic architecture and a private terrace, and some include small plunge pools.
  • You'll enjoy panoramic Aegean views from the central freshwater swimming pool.
  • A simple breakfast is served on your private terrace each morning.
Cons
  • The hotel's location within the village and along the popular Fira to Oia Path means the suites don't feel particularly secluded, and there's sometimes heavy foot traffic passing the private terraces.
  • Guests will need to navigate lots of steps to reach the suites and pool, so this isn't a good choice for those with those with limited mobility.
  • Some rooms look a little tired and are in need of maintenance and updating.

Authenticity

Opened in 2009, Above Blue Suites features 11 cave-style suites stacked along Santorini's famous Fira to Oia Path overlooking the volcanic caldera. Narrow steps and terraces connect the whitewashed accommodations, and a central pool area looks out over the Aegean in dramatic fashion. The suite decor isn't always quite up to the standard of the exteriors and views—the sometimes darker colors and acrylic furniture won't be to everyone's taste—but the spectacular views and romantic private terraces make this a popular spot for couples.

Location

You'll be based in Imerovigli, just a 10-minute drive north of the capital of Fira. Full of traditional cave houses and upscale hotels carved into the cliffside, this small village is home to some of the best restaurants (and the best views) on the island. You can walk down to Fira in 40 minutes along a caldera-rim path, and the dramatic Skaros Rock is a 15-minute stroll away. Farther north, the "sunset village" of Oia is a 25-minute drive. The ferry port is reachable in 25 minutes, and the island's airport in 15. There's free parking available nearby, but not on-site.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The hotel's 11 air-conditioned, cave-style suites feature classic Cycladic architecture with curved lines and thick, whitewashed walls. Each opens out onto a private terrace with dramatic caldera views, and most include a small outdoor plunge pool. The decor is unique to each room (with darker colors and fabrics providing a pop of color amid the stark white interiors), and layouts range from more compact queens to a two-bedroom villa with a separate seating area. Bathrooms feature intricate mosaic tiling and rain-style showers.

Amenities

This is a small hotel with limited amenities—the central unheated outdoor pool with caldera views is the focal point of the property, surrounded by sun loungers and a basic pool bar that serves drinks throughout the day. There's no on-site restaurant, but a simple breakfast is included in the room rate and served on your private terrace each morning, and in-room massages and beauty treatments are available.

Family-Friendliness

Children are allowed at Above Blue Suites, but the hotel is geared toward couples and has no family-specific amenities. The many steps throughout the property aren't a great fit for younger kids and strollers, but the larger suites and the two-bedroom villa can comfortably accommodate families with older children.

It’s important to note that the "hot tubs" are not heated past 80°F, so it’s best to adjust expectations for local standards.

This hotel is a DUMP. Do not be fooled by the website. It may have been nice serval years ago, but it is not only completely broken-down, but many of the items touted on their website are lies: 1. This hotel is a DUMP. Do not be fooled by the website. It may have been nice serval years ago, but it is not only completely broken-down, but many of the items touted on their website are lies:

1. Their description said “Bathrooms… come equipped with bathrobes and slippers.” This is not true. No bathrobes or slippers are provided. In fact, we were only allowed one towel every two days, and only one pool towel for our entire stay.
2. Their description said, “an indulgent Champagne breakfast is included”. This is not true. Champaign was not provided, and the selection was very basic, including options like a 1-egg “omelet” with nothing in it or corn flakes with milk.
3. The website shows breakfast being served on outdoor tables with cushioned chairs and white tablecloths. Instead, the tables were rickety and badly peeling, and the chairs were both broken and without cushions.
4. Their website states that is “a pool bar that serves drinks throughout the day.” This is also not true. No bar. No drinks. No service.
5. The website advertises the Moonlit Suite as having an “outdoor private HOT tub”. While there is an outdoor “tub”, the water was ice cold, it was dirty and the jets did not work.
6. The website says there is a Porter. This is also not true.
7. The room material noted that we should not drink the water but stated that two bottles of water would be delivered daily. That was not true. When we asked about water, we were told we could buy some at a store across the street.
8. The room material noted that each room has a mini bar. Again, this is a lie.
9. The website shows a small but clean luxury resort. Instead, we arrived to find loose wiring, broken tables and chairs, missing or stained and torn cushions, haphazard painting, rusted fixtures, mostly dead plants, an abundance of BLACK MOLD in the bathrooms and overall lack of maintenance.
10. The pool was full of algae.
I could go on and on but you get the idea. DON'T STAY HERE and SHAME ON THEM!!!

Well decorated and typical Santorini style.

Fantastic for sunset views right from the room. Few restaurants and market were wt stone throw’s distance. Convenient for private trips not sure of group trips.
Staff
Courteous, friendly, cleaning staff was amazing
Cleanliness & Comfort
Cleaned the jacuzzi every day. Cleaning lady provided with essentials even when we didn’t want room to be cleaned. There is a stench in the bathroom which is probably due to plumbing or sea water.
