Ava Hotel & Suites, Athens

4.7 (20 reviews) Upscale
Contemporary boutique hotel in Plaka with spacious suites, kitchenettes, balcony and terrace views, and a prime location near the Acropolis

Overview

This polished boutique stay is tucked down a side street in Plaka, nestled between the Arch of Hadrian and the rocky slopes of the Acropolis. Guests can stroll to the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Acropolis Museum in five minutes, or head north to Syntagma Square and the Botanical Garden in under 10. Despite the central location, the self-catering suites are spacious and quiet, with COCO-Mat mattresses, separate living areas, marble bathrooms, fully-equipped kitchenettes, and private balconies.

Pros
  • The location on a side street between the Acropolis and the Arch of Hadrian can't be beat—you're nestled between two major archaeological sites but without heavy foot traffic and crowds.
  • The suites vary in size, but even the smallest are remarkably spacious, with COCO-MAT mattresses, seating areas, marble bathrooms, and well-equipped kitchenettes.
  • Most suites offer private balconies or terraces with views over the Acropolis or toward the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
  • The multi-room suites with kitchenettes make this a great spot for families.
  • Staff are polished and professional, greeting guests with a welcome drink.
Cons
  • The lobby's black marble feels a bit dark in contrast to the Greek light, but the hotel's brightness opens up once you get into the rooms.
  • The views of landmarks like the Acropolis from some suites are limited, requiring you to lean over the balcony for a glimpse.

Authenticity

This boutique Athens hideaway may not offer a rich history or heaps of character, but its polished service and large, self-catering suites make it a handy spot for travelers seeking a more peaceful, private stay in the city center. Despite its almost tucked-away feel, you won't have to go far to glimpse some of the city's most important ancient sites: there's a reason this area is known as the "Neighborhood of the Gods." Take a step out the front door, and you'll spot the monumental Arch of Hadrian to your left and the rocky slopes of the Acropolis to your right.

Location

You'll stay on a side street just off the busy Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, at the southern edge of historic Plaka. The South Slope of the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum are within a 5-minute stroll, as is the beginning of Areopagitou, the pedestrian path that winds around the Acropolis from Plaka to Monastiraki. Monastiraki Square itself and Syntagma Square are just over 10 minutes away on foot (you can connect with the 40-minute metro to the airport at the latter). There's no on-site parking, but you'll find public lots within easy walking distance.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Choose between 16 spacious, tastefully decorated suites, most with extra sofa beds, private balconies, well-equipped kitchenettes, and Calacata marble bathrooms with rainfall showers. All include plush COCO-MAT mattresses, Nespresso machines, and handy dual-voltage outlets. Regular units overlook a neighborhood courtyard, while the two-room Executive options offer postcard views of the Arch of Hadrian or the Acropolis, and even larger top-floor suites add furnished terraces. The smallest Ava Loft Studio is perched under the rooftops; while it lacks a kitchenette, it has the benefit of the entire rooftop, with reach-out-and-touch-it views of the Acropolis.

Amenities

You won't find much in the way of amenities here beyond a generous breakfast buffet (not included in the rate but highly recommended by past guests). Expect classic continental and cooked options, plus a nice variety of traditional Greek fare alongside vegan and gluten-free options. The reception area is open 24/7, and there's a small bar area for drinks and snacks throughout the day.

Family-Friendliness

Children are welcome at Ava Hotel & Suites. The larger suites are good options for families, accommodating up to four guests with convertible king/twin beds and a sofa bed.

We stayed in a suite on the 3rd floor and had a beautiful view of the acropolis from our balcony. The location was busy, which was perfect for us because we were able to walk to most every area we wanted to visit. If you prefer less hustle and bustle, you might not want to stay in the Plaka neighborhood. But once we walked through the hotel doors, we were in a quiet, cozy environment. The Ava Hotel & Suites in Athens was in a good location, which made it convenient for exploring the area. The breakfast provided was really great, although the overall experience felt a bit impersonal compared to our stay at The Foundry. Despite this, the Ava Hotel was a solid choice for the start of our trip.

The hotel's claim that Executive Suites have a view of the Acropolis, Hadrian Arch etc. is misleading---if you stretch out over the very small balcony overlooking the street and turn your head as far as possible to the side you can get a glimpse of them in a narrow opening down the street between buildings. Hotel breakfasts were extensive and very good. We used the reception/bar area for our family/friends group pre-meal cocktails with both our own wine and wine purchased from the bar. Staff was very friendly and helpful and on our last night they did recommend a restaurant in an out-of-the-way beautiful location that was the culinary highlight of the stay.

Authenticity & Character
While very clean and functional, there is really no notable character to the hotel.
Location
Perfectly placed for exploring the Acropolis and exploring central Athens on foot. We walked to meet our Acropolis and food tour guides. The nearby restaurants in the area are unremarkable cookie-cutter Greek restaurants. With the staff's help, we did find one exceptional restaurant off the main road.
Staff
Professional, helpful, knowledgeable, friendly. Maid service prompt and unimposing.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Bed was great, sitting room was spacious. Bathroom not huge but adequate. Good AC on hot days.
