Pros
  • The lodge is adorned with local Costa Rican art, adding an authentic and welcoming touch to your stay.
  • You can enjoy live music performances while dining at the on-site restaurant.
  • The hotel's use of solar panels for water heating showcases its commitment to sustainability.
  • The location is convenient, with restaurants, shops, and attractions nearby.
Cons
  • You may find the room categories limited, as there are no luxury options.
  • While still accessible, the hotel isn't as close to nearby attractions as other properties.

Authenticity

Monteverde Country Lodge is within a region known for its stunning natural beauty and biodiversity. The hotel's location on hilly terrain provides a tranquil setting. Enjoy the region's essence on the property's grounds, complete with an outdoor garden, fountains, and tropical plants.

Location

Although not central, Monteverde Country Lodge is still within walking distance of a few restaurants and cafés. You'll be just down the street from Monteverde Butterfly Gardens and an Ecological Sanctuary with hiking options. If you'd like to use the pool or spa, you'll have to go to Hotel & Spa Poco a Poco, which is about five minutes away by car.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Choose between standard (Classic) and Superior rooms, which channel Monteverde's vintage style of the 1980s with wood paneling. Although it's a nod to the past, the Classic rooms have a lot of paneling, making them feel a bit dated, whereas the Superior rooms are newer and seem to use the wood accents in a more flattering, modern way. Most rooms have a shared front porch area with outdoor seating. Bathrooms are pretty basic.

Other Highlights

The lodge offers a delightful dining experience at its on-site restaurant, where you can enjoy breakfast, other meals, and occasional live music performances by the talented staff. For families traveling with children, the hotel provides a dedicated kids' playground and plenty of room to explore nature in its gardens.

Sustainability

The Country Lodge is committed to sustainability and demonstrates this through its use of solar panels for water heating. This eco-friendly approach minimizes the hotel's environmental impact while still providing a comfortable stay.

Very nice clean hotel. The property was pretty. The hotel does not have air conditioning. They have a designated area for smokers. We were given a room on the second floor walk up. The breakfast selection was varied, most guests seemed to like it. The restaurant across the street was very good and had fair prices. About a mile from town, very hilly, no side walks. Easy taxi ride, $5. Activity booking office in town. 2 supermarkets, restaurants of all levels. coffee shops, pharmacy.

This is definitely a "last resort" hotel. It wasn't terrible, but it did fall short in several ways. No AC (not awful since it's pretty cool in Monte Verde)
No heater (can be a problem)
Very thin walls (people talking outside might as well be in the room)
Awkward layout (the bed light switches are behind the pillows of one of the beds. No power outlets near the nightstand)
Restaurant is too small to accomodate the included breakfast (food was good, but several people were allowed to serve...

It's about a mile from the town center and down a large, steep hill. About 15 minutes down, much more back up.

This lodge is charming. It isn’t close to town so it’s a hilly walk into the downtown area. Rooms lack air conditioning and it was quite stuffy and warm at night. We left the windows open but there wasn’t a cross breeze. I think ceiling fans would be a great addition. There’s no pool onsite, but we got to use the pool a Poco a Poco, which is very nice! I highly recommend going there to use their facilities. The room we were in was very small, but our kids were in a larger room. We were supposed to have a room with 3 beds for our 3 kids, but they gave us a room with only 2 beds. When we asked about correcting it, we were told our kids had to be in another building. We decided to keep them closer to us and the girls shared a bed. The food at their restaurant was the best we had on our trip. The breakfast buffet was ok but the food on their menu was delicious! The only other things was the water pressure in our shower was low. The water came out in a single steam and alternated between hot and cold temps. I would start the shower hot and while I was washing my hair, it would turn cold. Also you can’t flush toilet paper here. It’s a custom in many parts of the country, but I prefer to flush my toilet paper.
