Pros
  • The location of the hotel is perfect for anyone who wants to explore Heraklion, as it’s close to the fortress and Old Town.
  • Folks interested in a sea view can check out rooms on the fourth floor, some of which have panoramic views of the city with the sea and mountains visible.
  • A number of the rooms have spacious balconies, which is a nice addition in the spring or summer for those who want to enjoy some coffee and relaxation outside.
Cons
  • The style may feel a bit basic and even dated to some, but others may find charm in this hotel that first opened in 1987.
  • The building isn’t outfitted for folks with wheelchairs or other mobility issues, as there aren’t ramps here and the bathrooms all have steps up into the showers.
  • The hotel doesn’t have its own parking, but there is a lot nearby, so guests can drop their things off and then go park more easily.

Authenticity

The Atrion Hotel first opened in 1987 and in some ways, it retains that timelessness of an old hotel. It’s clear that this hotel has been around for a while and although some things have been updated like flat screen TVs and wifi, the style and feeling of the hotel seems like it hasn’t changed too much since the ‘80s. If you’re looking for an authentic Heraklion experience, the location of the Atrion offers that, since many of the sights of the city are within easy reach.

Location

The central location of the Atrion Hotel is one of the best parts about it, as it offers convenient access to the city’s sights from its spot just near the water. Both the Rocca a Mare fortress and Archaeological Museum are just a 10-minute walk, while Lion Square is five minutes away by foot. The Palace of Knossos is 20 minutes away by car and those who want to get some sea and sun can be at Ammoudara Beach in 10 minutes with a car.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The Atrion has 60 rooms that span six floors, which mostly differ in view and size. Sea view rooms are available in rooms from the fourth floor and higher and some suites have panoramic views of the city with the mountains and sea. While there are some bigger rooms with sofabeds, this hotel is best for couples and solo travelers, since there aren’t connecting family rooms either.
