Charming boutique hotel with an interesting history, plus antique furnishings, an on-site bar, and a lounge

Overview

Hotel Boutique Can Sastre perfectly preserves the building's history as a 19th-century pastry shop, and guests can enjoy details like original mosaic floors and relics from the past. All rooms offer a warm and cozy ambiance and surprisingly large bathrooms, with some units featuring soaking tubs and/or private terraces. The bar serves drinks in the lounge or outdoor patio, and guests will enjoy breakfast in the old stone cellar. There's an option to book at the on-site restaurant (available seasonally) for dinner.

Pros
  • The owners (the fourth generation of the same family) proudly exhibit the building's history as a pastry shop from the mid-19th century.
  • Guests can enjoy plenty of historical details, including the original candy-making supplies from the pastry shop, plus exposed beams and mosaic floors.
  • The hotel serves an impressive breakfast buffet in the building's cellar with tables under a unique stone ceiling.
  • All the main city sites are just a few minutes away by foot, including the cathedral, Port, and City Hall.
  • The rooms are incredibly charming, with warm, inviting decor and spacious bathrooms (some with double sinks, soaking tubs, and/or private terraces).
  • Enjoy dinner at the restaurant and drinks from the on-site bar, which offers seating inside, on an outdoor terrace, or in the cozy communal lounge.
Cons
  • Though there is a dinner restaurant on the property, it's only available during the slower season when the hotel is less busy, so from November through March.
  • The hotel provides some limited parking, but it's best to book ahead of time.

Additional Notes From Ash

A pastry shop turned boutique hotel—my dream accommodation! I have a sweet tooth, so browsing all the artifacts from the building's original business, La Sin Nombre (the sign is still out front, as is one of the owner's bicycle from 1940), including the display case filled with antique jars of candy. The owners thought of every little detail to honor the building's past, the generations of owners, and Menorca's heritage.

Authenticity

The hotel occupies a beautiful building from 1862, once a pastry shop and now a boutique lodging owned by four generations of the same family. The renovation preserved many details and artifacts, including the original candy-making machine and wrapping paper from 1840. Live this history by enjoying breakfast in the cellar under curved stone ceilings, sleeping in rooms with exposed beams and arched windows, and walking across original tile and mosaic flooring.

Location

Quiet and quaint, the hotel sits on a curved brick street used mainly by residents. You can enjoy strolls through these charming streets and reach sites like the cathedral, Port, City Hall, and markets in less than five minutes. The island's famous Camí de Cavalls trail, which wraps around the whole of Menorca, cuts through the city, and you can follow it for about 20 minutes to reach the swimming spot at Sa Farola Beach.

Rooms & Bathrooms

All the rooms feature historical details of the building, including beamed ceilings and tile flooring, plus neutral tones and details that either play up the property's past or Menorca's heritage. Even in the most standard rooms, the bathrooms are huge and beautiful, most with double sinks and rainfall showerheads. You'll also enjoy a local company's luxury toiletries and amenities like air conditioning, bathrobes, minibars, and coffee makers. Upgraded units add in-room soaking tubs and/or private terraces.

Other Highlights

The breakfast room sits in the building's cellar, so you'll enjoy a buffet served under beautifully preserved stone ceilings. There's also an on-site dinner restaurant headed by a local chef, Chef Joan Bagur, who blends traditional recipes with modern techniques (though only available off-season). You can relax at the bar, offering indoor or outdoor seating, or in the lounge, with its comfy seating and plenty of antiques to keep you entertained.
