Overview

Rocca a Mare, a sleek seaside hotel, sits just outside central Heraklion along the coastal road with wide-open views of the Cretan Sea. Guests stay in a quieter area removed from the city's bustle, yet within a 15-minute walk of the historic (and car-free) center and a short drive to landmarks like the Palace of Knossos. Rooms are bright and minimalist, featuring warm wood accents, modern finishes, and furnished balconies—many with excellent sea views—while select options add extra space and panoramas. Amenities focus on laid-back relaxation, including a rooftop pool and bar with wraparound vistas, plus an all-day restaurant serving a smattering of Mediterranean and Cretan-inspired dishes.

Pros
  • You're well placed, outside the hubbub of Heraklion's center (about a 15-minute walk), and only a quick drive to Knossos.
  • You'll have front-row views of the Cretan Sea from the rooftop and most rooms.
  • Rooms are clean, bright, and thoughtfully designed with comfortable beds and quality finishes. Everything feels fresh and well-kept, with just enough polish to feel elevated without being overdone (for ultimate luxury, book the Signature Suite for top-floor panoramas of the sea)
  • The rooftop pool and Rocca Cloud bar are easily the highlight, offering 360-degree views that can be enjoyed from sunrise to sunset.
  • Staff is attentive and warm from the moment you arrive, and little touches—like the welcome drink and smooth check-in—set the tone of your stay and help you feel well cared for.
Cons
  • Not deeply "Greek" in character. While there are some thoughtful nods to Minoan culture, the overall design is quite modern and could feel more international than distinctly local (including many of the dining options).
  • It's a 15-minute walk from the city center, and the immediate area around the hotel is quieter, with fewer restaurants and shops right outside your door.

Authenticity

Part of the Accor Group's Handwritten Collection—a curated collection of stylish hotels—Rocca a Mare is indeed stylish, yet the overall aesthetic leans modern and design-forward; it's less of a traditional Greek stay. That said, you'll find subtle Minoan-inspired nods to the city's (and island's) past, from pomegranate welcome drinks symbolizing ancient abundance to curated books and art referencing Crete's earliest civilization—never mind those Gulf of Heraklion panoramas.

Location

Set along the sea road just outside the center of Heraklion, the hotel offers a quieter, more relaxed base with uninterrupted views over the Cretan Sea. You're about a 15-20-minute walk from the city center and its pedestrianized social and cultural hub, Platia Venizelou, with its Venetian-era Morosini Fountain, museums, cafés, and shops; close enough for easy exploring but removed from the busier, less polished parts of town. The historic Palace of Knossos is a 15-minute drive south, while the Heraklion port and Nikos Kazantzakis Airport are a 5- and 12-minute drive, respectively.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Rocca a Mare's 36 rooms and suites are modern and minimalist, with warm wood tones complementing cool white marble countertops and sleek black lighting fixtures, clean lines, and subtle geometric balcony screen details adding visual interest. Nearly all categories feature comfy (read: no plastic) furnished private balconies, many with sweeping sea views. Layouts range from cozy city-view rooms to more spacious suites with panoramic sea views and family connecting options, sleeping up to five guests. Bathrooms are modern and well-appointed (and include slippers and robes), with some city-view rooms on the ground or mezzanine level adapted for mobility needs.

Amenities

Amenities center on relaxation and elevated views, the standout being the 66-foot (20 m) infinity rooftop pool and the Rocca Cloud bar, which overlooks the mountains, gulf, and coastline. There's also an all-day restaurant and bar serving Mediterranean and Cretan-inspired dishes, a well-equipped gym, and a bright, airy lobby and terrace space for unwinding. Practical touches include 24-hour reception, room service, laundry, and nearby parking arrangements (tip: check in first for your voucher). A spa is set to open soon.

Family-Friendliness

Rocca a Mare Heraklion caters to families with flexible room configurations. Family connecting rooms can accommodate up to five guests, with the option for requesting a crib, and sofa beds in higher room categories add extra sleeping space. While there's a rooftop pool and relaxed dining options, there aren't dedicated kids' facilities or programming.
