Iceland Trip for our Honeymoon

A couple visited Iceland in March 2017

“Northern Lights, Volcanos, blue lagoon, Silfra fissure Glaciers and Glacial lagoons, south shore rock formations, waterfalls and to see other amazing wildlife and nature. This is for our honeymoon. Would love to see as much as we can in iceland during the week. Seeing the northeren lights is a priority, so need to spend some nights rural.”

Hi, welcome to kimkim. I'll work with you to plan a great trip to Iceland.

I'm going to send a few ideas for 5-7 day trips to Iceland that avoid the larger crowds. Let me know what you think.

Hi Chris,

We are interested in trips 1,2,6 or 7. Are these self drive trips tho? Is it difficult to self drive considering the snow and ice i'm assuming will be on the road?

Do you have approximate prices and what is included in prices?

I will do the snorkelling at Silfra, but can always do that additional to any cross Iceland tour we do.

Chris McCarty
These are all self-drive options. I can also look into a few small group or private tours if you like. Those will cost more but you will not have to worry about driving.

For that time of year I would make sure you have a 4WD car, but as long as you pay attention to road conditions you should be fine. I can give you some example prices for the options you liked. Do you have a rough hotel budget or style I should stick to? For example, some guesthouses may be more cost-effective but may have shared bathrooms between a few rooms in the house.

Hi, Hard to say budget wise, would go cheaper on hotels/accom if it meant we could see more things etc. I would like to stay on the lower end. Adam has his heart set on not driving (going on a preset tour) as he is not keen on driving on the wrong side of the road in a country where we don't speak the language, I guess we are not the best at map reading. It would be good to know the price of a self drive holiday tho, to compare.

Chris McCarty
Ok, I can give both options. Driving is very straight forward in Iceland, as there are not too many major roads, so few ways to go the wrong way to a location. Signs to major areas and sights are very well posted as well.

Here's a 5-day small group tour:
- Northern Lights hunt all nights of tour
- Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls
- Gerðuberg basalt cliffs
- Vatnshellir cave
- Small fishing villages in Snaefellsnes
- Djúpalónssandur black sand beach with iron wreckage bits
- Golden Circle: Thingvellir, Strokkur, Gullfoss
- South: Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, Reynisfjara black sand beach with Reynisdrangar basalt pillars, Vik.
- Ice Cave, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon
- Glacier Walk

OK. We think that first tour sounds good (Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Southern Highlights, and Golden Circle: 7-9 day Itinerary), arriving on 2nd march flying out 11 march.

Hi, here are the quotes for you for car rental, accommodations for 9 nights, the dive, and service fee. For accommodations I found highly-rated guesthouses for most options because I knew you were on a budget. If you wanted mid-range or a nice hotel for a couple of the nights, let me know and I can make that change.

Car Rental:
- $669 AUD for SUV with 4WD (recommended)
- $416 AUD for economy car with winter tires

Accommodations for 9 nights: $1435 AUD (160/nt)
- Mostly guesthouses (all highly rated), if you prefer mid-range or higher end hotels I can change them.
- It could be $170 AUD less overall, but that would require having twin beds for about half the nights, which I figured you may not want for your honeymoon trip.

Silfra Dive: (price for 2 adults)
- Scuba: 79,980 ISK ($952 AUD)
- Snorkel: 37,980 ISK ($452 AUD)

Omg thats amazing!  Yes the guesthouses sound lovely. Maybe the last night in Reykjavik in a nice hotel would be fun.

We will take the SUV please, is it possible to be an automatic?

Silfra will be snorkelling please.

Argh is all getting exciting now!

Chris McCarty
The accommodation is total, not per person. I will find an option for your last night in Reykjavik, and make sure to get you an automatic SUV and the snorkeling tour.

They have drysuits, so you will stay (fairly) warm

Chris McCarty
Great. I will start making the arrangements asap. I'll send you all confirmations (I will also put it all together for you at the end).

Thanks so much :-)

Chris McCarty
You're welcome. You are going to have a great time.

So amazing! yay!

I have put through my payment details :-)

Chris McCarty
Bring layers and waterproof jackets and pants (umbrellas won't do you any good with the wind). I added some restaurant recommendations for the different areas as well, not sure if you saw that yet.

Have a great time! Please let me know how the trip is going, and feel free to send some photos and we can publish them to our social media channels to show other kimkim travelers how much fun Iceland is.
