Self-Drive Iceland Vacation

Group of 4 friends looking to visit Iceland in May 2018

“We would like to do a self-drive tour. Some extra things we are looking to do are: snowmobiling, Grimsley Island for the arctic circle ferry ride, glacier hike, the blue lagoon, zodiac tour in glacier bay, and we need a car that would fit 4 adults with 4-5 pieces of luggage. We range in age from 47-64 years old.

Summary of the trip planning conversation

Below are some useful excerpts from the trip planning conversation
Christina:
Thanks for your message and your interest in a self-drive tour around Iceland. My name is Christina and I live in Reykjavik. I am specialized in customized tours all around the country. It would be my pleasure to organize an unforgettable time for you in Iceland.

I can definitely prepare a trip plan with the mentioned places and activities included. I will send you a more detailed itinerary as soon as possible.

Michael M:
We are currently looking at your proposal compared to others, and thanks for the map. Seeing our tour is much easier for me to picture our tour. I will relay this info to the other couple we are traveling with and contact your company as we need.

Christina:
I am very happy to hear that you like the trip plan I prepared for you. I hope the map gave you a better idea about the road trip I planned for you. Is there any other question you have regarding your planned trip in Iceland? Please do not hesitate to contact me in case of a question.

Michael M:
How far from Akureyri is our last tour before arriving there and staying two nights? Is it more than a 30-minute drive? Do we book our excursions like snowmobiling or does your company? And do we get a link to pick the excursions?

Christina:
On day 2 you receive the rental car and the driving distance from Reykjavik to Akureyri is 360 kilometers or 236 miles. The cottage I have in mind for you is only a 7 minutes drive away from Akureryi. There is no breakfast included for the 2 nights stay in Akureyri but very close are some very nice bakeries and cafes where you can have breakfast.

I just stayed the last weekend in the cabin and enjoyed it a lot. Summerhouses or cabins are very popular in Iceland and Icelanders love to stay over the weekend in a cottage. It is a very unique experience and I am sure you will like it.

Here are two pictures from the cabin to get a better idea about it. It comes with 2 comfortable bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It has a nice living rooms with kitchen and a great terrace with outdoor Jacuzzi.

You can definitely book extra excursions with us. I recommend to first decide about the tour package itself. After booking the tour with us I will book all accommodations for you and later we can discuss and decide about possible day tours.

I think it would be a good idea to visit the blue lagoon on your arrival day since the hotel rooms are normally not ready before 14:00 p.m. Our driver would pick you up from the airport, drives you to the blue lagoon. There you can storage your luggage and can relax in the blue lagoon. After the blue lagoon I can either organize a bus transfer to your hotel in Reykjavik (no extra costs) or our driver would pick you up at transfer you to your accommodation for a small extra fee.

The blue lagoon is changing at the moment their packages for next year and we did not get yet the final price list. Normally we recommend our guests the so called "comfort package" with entrance fee, use of towel, one drink of your choice and a face mask included.
