Though Tamarindo is known for its idyllic coves, inlets, and white-sand beaches, sometimes you need a break from the surf and want to relax by the pool. Tamarindo has several lodging choices that offer swimming pools, including many with multiple pools or areas where you can relax in sunloungers and still enjoy those ocean views.

Los Altos de Eros

As an adults-only hotel, Los Altos de Eros offers a quiet reprieve from the busy downtown area, set atop a hill within the forest. You'll understand why this is an award-winning hotel the moment you see the outdoor pool with its infinity style and Spanish design. Many rooms are poolside, with sunloungers set at the edge of the pool overlooking the valley and coastline; it's one of the best spots on the property to watch the sunset! To enhance your experience, go for the hotel's spa package, including massages, a Balinese soaking tub, and a hydrotherapy pool.

This hilltop location puts you at a 30-minute drive from Tamarindo, though other beaches are only 20 minutes away. Besides the pool and spa, the property also has several unique perks, like a yoga studio in its fitness center and a giant stationary hammock that can fit multiple people. There are just six rooms, all have one bed, but four of the units connect (suitable for groups). The other two options are suites with king beds, and all feature warm, bright, and airy spaces with organic toiletries made in Costa Rica.

Remember that this is an adults-only hotel, though there's always the option to rent out the entire property—and in that case, kids are welcome.

Jardín del Eden Boutique Hotel

Quiet in both its location and as an adults-only property, Jardín del Eden Boutique Hotel offers a truly exceptional outdoor pool scene. You'll reach the pool by walking down a staircase. Its edges curve around the facilities,' with a smaller elevated section meeting the hotel's restaurant. At night, the ambience is truly memorable. To enhance the experience, you'll find dense greenery, tall palm trees, and cushy sunloungers around the pool.

In addition to the main pool area, you'll also find a private beachfront lounge with a plunge pool, umbrellas, and sun loungers. When not taking advantage of these amenities, enjoy your meals at Jardín del Eden, which offers a half-board experience with breakfast and dinner included in your stay. The menu rotates daily, but you can also stroll into town for meals via a short walking path leading to the main road along the beach—just note that the return trek requires a bit of an uphill climb. A few additional property highlights include parking, a book exchange, and spa services.

Enjoy warm, bright, and airy rooms, most with balconies or terraces and all with king beds and modern, clean bathrooms. Generally, the standard options feel a little left behind, so you might want to upgrade to units that add more space and views. Many also feature outdoor Jacuzzi tubs and daybeds.

Capitán Suizo Beachfront Boutique Hotel is a luxury hotel located directly on the southern side of Tamarindo Beach, with its zero-entry lagoon-style pool bordering the coast and encircled by tall trees. It's a truly idyllic setting, where you can relax on a cushioned sun lounger by the pool while still enjoying the sea breeze, ocean views, and sounds of the waves crashing. The pool area has free WiFi, and you can request drinks from the bar and magazines from the concierge.

Though just a 10-minute walk from downtown, you'll be surrounded by nature, yet not far from the action. The grounds embrace the region perfectly, with an oceanfront setting featuring gardens and forests. At low tide, the beach is perfect for swimming, and during high tide, it's ideal for trying your hand at surfing. You'll also find kayaks, paddleboards, and boogie boards to rent, plus other perks like board games and books to borrow, dance lessons, and Spanish language classes.

You have plenty of choices regarding the property's 35 cozy rooms, set in six bungalows, six oceanfront units, 22 superior rooms, and a four-bedroom suite. Some feature beachfront locations and views, whereas others are within the hotel's gardens. All units offer warm tones, king beds, sofa beds, organic toiletries, and furnished outdoor spaces, and if you book a bungalow, you'll enjoy an outdoor shower.

And as a sustainability favorite, you'll also find quite a few green initiatives at the hotel, as it has the highest possible rating for Certification for Sustainable Tourism. A few examples of projects include hosting an on-site water treatment facility, using solar panels, and supplying vegetables, fruits, and herbs for the hotel's restaurant with its garden.

Relax by the pool surrounded by jungle (photo courtesy of Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas)

Stay near the beach and tucked into the trees at Cala Luna Boutique Hotel, a mid-range hotel where you can enjoy the property's many perks, including a serene outdoor pool. Surrounded by a manicured lawn, tiki torches, striped sun loungers, and tall palm trees, the pool offers a completely relaxing experience. But while the main swimming pool here is great, the star of the show is the multi-room villas that feature private pools—big enough for the entire family!

Cala Luna isn't an oceanfront property, but a short path takes you straight to the beach. Feel free to bring your beach chairs and towels (provided in the room) to the shore. Regarding other amenities, you'll find a focus on nature and sustainability, with the option to elevate your meal with a farm-to-table experience at La Senda Farm (owned by the hotel). You can also enjoy the wellness center with a spa, bike rentals, and yoga, fitness, and meditation classes. Other amenities include two on-site eateries and a complimentary drink if you decide to stay and watch the sunset at the property.

As a smaller boutique hotel, there are just 39 rooms at Cala Luna, all with a bright and airy vibe. Some units offer a unique shower/hot tub combo, and all feature private outdoor spaces and aromatherapy with organic toiletries. Choose from deluxe rooms with king or queen beds, and for more space, opt for one of the suites or multi-bedroom villas with private pools (great for families).

Tamarindo Diria
MID-RANGE
Visited by kimkim staff

Sip drinks and swim in the expansive pool (photo courtesy of Tamarindo Diria)

Tamarindo Diria Beach Resort is an area staple, opening in 1972 as one of the first resorts in Guanacaste. The resort provides three room categories set in sections, with each area featuring an outdoor pool and swim-up bar. The pool at the Sunrise Oceanfront area offers beach views, whereas the Tropicana lodging features an adults-only pool. Family rooms will enjoy a kid-friendly, zero-entry, lagoon-style pool.

Besides swimming and sipping drinks, you can also relax in sunloungers at the pool or across the property's extensive grounds, which feature gardens, a walking path, day beds, and more. Other perks include a complimentary welcome drink, a space where you can borrow books, and a gym.

You can't get more central than this hotel, as it's directly at the midpoint of Tamarindo's main road. You'll be in a busy area on the beach and close to many eateries, so keep in mind that it gets a little noisy. Additionally, this is a large hotel complex with over 200 units. Though the rooms can feel generic without any local flair or character, they're comfortable and have amenities like indoor and outdoor ceiling fans and balconies or terraces. Some come with multiple beds, private hot tubs (Tropicana junior suites), and/or rain showers.
