“We would like a self-drive holiday doing the circle island route. We would like one large automatic vehicle (preferably a four-wheel drive) and the best available accommodation. We have no problems driving and want a self-guided vacation. There are four adults all circa 60. We are interested in seeing all major Iceland natural tourist sites. Perhaps two nights in Reykjavik then around the island.

Summary of the trip planning conversation
A bit more detail for the travel specialist. We are four Australians. Two couples. We will have just completed a G Adventure cruise around Svalbard. We want to see as many of the natural sights of Iceland as possible traveling in one vehicle and either sharing a two bedroom unit/suite or in separate accommodation. We would prefer best available accommodation with either queen or king beds and ensuite bathrooms. We are used to long distance driving. There are a number of agents packaging Full Circle tours - so we are seeking someone with real knowledge to assist us to choose the right route, accommodation, and transport.
The Ring Road is a great way to see the most famous sights of Iceland. With 11 days, you can spend a few days in Reykjavik (perhaps the first and last) and then take the rest to drive around with some time for activities and detours to the offbeat places.
Here is an 8 day Ring Road itinerary which we can customise to your interests.
I recommend a 4X4 Toyota LandCruiser which would make for a comfortable trip, and also have space for luggage. As for accommodation, it is possible to have 2 double rooms with ensuite bathrooms at 3-4 star hotels or 2 bedroom apartments, whatever you prefer.
As part of your package, you will receive a detailed day wise itinerary tailored to your specific interests with digital maps. I am also always available for questions or assistance before or during your trip.
It is also possible to include activities or tours you are interested in. Popular options are glacier tours, hiking, lava caving and whale watching. Depending on what you choose, I will space these out over your time.
The eight-day tour sounds great and we would probably like to expand it to include the full 10 nights available. We have another friend who lives in Germany who I will include in the conversation. What vehicle options would you recommend if there were five adults traveling?
We can customise it to make it 12 days with either more time along the way for stops and detours, or we could include the beautiful Westfjords or the Westman islands.
If you would all like to travel together, I recommend a 7 seater 4X4 which would comfortably accommodate all of you and your luggage.
The best available accommodation is 4 star in the countryside, and in some regions/areas only 3 stars. I hope that is ok.
The exact hotels depend on your detailed itinerary which is designed to balance the daily driving time, and also the availability when you confirm. However, once we book everything, I can send you a list of hotels and if you have any concerns, we can find suitable replacements for those nights.
An 11 day / 10-night package for 4 persons includes:
- 11 day large 7-seater 4X4 SUV rental (with CDW insurance, two drivers, GPS, airport pick up and drop off, unlimited kilometers and emergency service)
- Day-wise driving plan and Google map directions
- 10 night 4-star hotel accommodation wherever possible, else 3-star (2 double rooms with private bath and breakfast)
- Detailed day wise sightseeing itinerary tailored to your interests and preferences, whereby you will see the most famous attractions and also lesser known gems
- Lava cave tour
- Myvatn Nature Baths admission
- Jokulsarlon zodiac tour
- Contact person in Iceland
Let me know how this sounds and if you would like to include anything else!
