Artrip Hotel, Madrid

Budget
Simple hotel in the up-and-coming and trendy Lavapies neighborhood

Overview

Stay in the hip Lavapies neighborhood on its main street lined with tapas bars and local shops. Enjoy experiencing a residential area while still being able to walk to many city sites, like El Rastro flea market and El Retiro Park. The rooms are simple, but the value and staff are exceptional.

Pros
  • Set in the Lavapies neighborhood, you'll experience a different side of the city, as the district is residential and multicultural with some of the city's best eateries.
  • You'll be within walking distance of sites like the Botanical Gardens, El Retiro Park, El Rastro flea market, the Atocha train station, and the metro.
  • If you're traveling with kids, triple and family rooms are a good choice, with some including bunkbeds.
  • Sleep in a historic building renovated to mimic the local housing style.
  • The hotel is highly rated, with most guests praising the exceptionally attentive staff and value.
Cons
  • The hotel serves breakfast, but it's quite simple compared to some other city accommodations.
  • Though the location might be a perk for some, keep in mind that it's a less-touristy area, so you'll have to walk to get to the big sites.

Authenticity

The hotel sits in a renovated 20th-century building with a historic brick facade and iron balconies. The main staircase maintains its exposed brick, hardwood, and iron balusters, but the rooms reflect a modern style reflective of typical Madrid housing.

Location

If you'd like to stay off the beaten path, the Lavapies neighborhood is an excellent choice. It's an up-and-coming district filled with authentic shops and some of the best eateries in the city. Around one corner is Carmencita (a local favorite for brunch), around the other is the trendy specialty coffee bar Hola Coffee Fourquet, and across the street is Bar El Boqueron, a prime tapas spot. You'll still be within walking distance of many sites, plus just down the street from the metro.

Rooms & Bathrooms

You'll find simple, basic rooms that are bright, airy, squeaky clean, and comfortable. As a standard option, there aren't many frills here, but the value for the price is exceptional. Some rooms have bunk beds (a great option for families), and others feature wood-beamed ceilings and iron balconies with street views. Bathrooms are spacious and come with rainfall showerheads and wooden floors in the shower.

Other Highlights

Enjoy a simple yet extensive breakfast buffet each morning, which features the usual goods, including fruit, cold cuts, cheese, cereals, toast, pastries, juice, and coffee. Another big highlight is the friendly staff. Although just a standard option, Artrip has some of the best reviews, with many mentioning the kind and attentive staff, and we agree.
