4.6 (5 reviews) · Upscale
Modern urban hotel in the swanky Salamanca district, with a rooftop pool, city views, stylish rooms, and two bars

Overview

H10 Puerta de Alcalá is a stylish urban hotel in Madrid's elegant Salamanca district. Its address places it a little farther from the historic center, though it's close to El Retiro Park, and high-end shops, cafés, and restaurants are just steps away. The rooms feature large windows, sleek black furnishings, and marble-tiled bathrooms, with upgraded units offering private balconies and city views. The hotel's highlight is its rooftop terrace with a small plunge pool, sun loungers, and El Cielo de Alcalá, a bar serving Mediterranean tapas and signature cocktails.

Pros
  • The hotel is in the upscale Salamanca district, just a block from El Retiro Park but a little removed from the city center.
  • You can enjoy panoramic views from the rooftop terrace with a seasonal plunge pool and sun loungers.
  • Choose between two bars: one on the rooftop and a cozy lobby option that serves light dishes, tapas, and cocktails.
  • Rooms are bright and inviting, with comfortable beds, a pillow menu, and marble bathrooms with heated floors.
Cons
  • The hotel is slightly outside the center, and it's at least a 30-minute walk to many Madrid landmarks.
  • The WiFi can be slow and sometimes unreliable.

Authenticity

Initially built in 1969 and renovated in 2016, H10 Puerta de Alcalá offers a modern urban experience with some local flair. The hotel's design has an airy, contemporary feel, with common areas mixing pale woods with pops of scarlet, charcoal, and midnight blue, and the cool selection of modern art pieces, photographs, and sculptures (many by local artists) gives the interiors a gallery-like feel. The clientele tends to be a mix of tourists and business travelers, though the rooftop terrace with sweeping views of El Retiro Park and the city skyline often draws locals for a sunset-hour gintonic or two.

Location

The hotel sits in the upscale Salamanca district, a block from the northeast corner of El Retiro Park and surrounded by 19th-century mansions, luxury shops, and Michelin-starred dining. It's a little removed from the center if you're planning to explore on foot; the Prado Museum and Plaza Cibeles are a 20-minute walk along the park, but you'll want to head to one of the two nearby metro stations, Retiro and Velázquez, to reach more popular sites. The address on the city's eastern side puts the airport within easy reach, just a 25-minute drive away, and there's limited available parking on-site.

Rooms & Bathrooms

The 146 air-conditioned rooms at H10 Puerta de Alcalá range from compact Essential options to slightly larger Deluxe units with sofa beds or terraces. All are furnished in a tasteful, contemporary style, mixing blond wood floors and headboards, sleek black furniture, and unique artworks and photography. The chic marble bathrooms include rain-style showers or bathtubs, heated floors, and eco-friendly toiletries. Upgraded rooms include additional perks like bathrobes, slippers, and Nespresso machines. You can choose between inner courtyard or street-facing options; opt for the former for less street noise.

Amenities

The rooftop terrace, El Cielo de Alcalá, is a highlight with its glass-sided plunge pool (open May to September), complete with complimentary pool towels, sunbeds, and a lifeguard. The adjoining open-air bar offers panoramic views of Madrid, and it's a popular spot to sip a gin and tonic or nibble on tapas come sunset. In cooler weather, you can head downstairs to the cozy lobby bar for cocktails and light meals. An optional breakfast buffet is served in La Galería, a bright, basement dining area, and it includes classic hot dishes like eggs and bacon, plus Spanish cheeses and charcuterie, local pastries, and gluten-free options.

Family-Friendliness

H10 Puerta de Alcalá is kid-friendly, though its amenities are mostly aimed toward an adult clientele. Classic Superior and Deluxe rooms with sofa beds are the best bet for families, sleeping two adults and two children, but no extra beds can be added to the rooms. The hotel also provides cribs, a babysitting service, and a kid-friendly buffet at an additional charge.

I'm a kimkim staff member and was on a work trip when I stayed here. The hotel has a delicious rooftop restaurant with amazing city views plus a plunge pool open in the summer months. I was fine with walking longer distances to those places/ taking public transportation and taxis.

The room had a little table and seating area to do some work from my laptop, the TV is not a smart TV and does not have any streaming capabilities but didn't bother me. Clean and modern rooms with great amenities including robe and slippers.
