Luxury hotel in Madrid near museums with a rooftop pool, on-site restaurant, art collection, and uniquely decorated rooms

Overview

Enjoy a convenient location right on Plaza de las Cortes—within walking distance of sites like Neptune Fountain, El Retiro Park, and Puerta del Sol—while staying at Villa Real Hotel. Housed in an early 20th-century building with six floors, Villa Real has 115 guest rooms. The decor is elegant and somewhat old-fashioned, with marble flooring, chandeliers, and wood-paneled walls. The hotel offers a varied breakfast buffet, a rooftop plunge pool, and a gastro bar with outdoor dining. Some rooms have private sundecks, and family rooms feature two levels.

Pros
  • You'll be within walking distance of major sites like El Retiro Park, Neptune Fountain, Puerta del Sol, and Plaza Mayor.
  • The hotel serves a varied breakfast buffet and has a Mediterranean-inspired gastro bar with a terrace overlooking Plaza de las Cortes.
  • The hotel has an extensive art and archaeology collection, some of which can be admired in the lobby.
  • Family rooms sleep up to four people and feature a split-level design, plus a private terrace.
Cons
  • You won't find as many amenities here as you might expect from a 5-star hotel.
  • Some in-room facilities, like air-conditioning and safes, need upgrades or repairs.
  • Rooms aren't sound-insulated, and it's possible to hear noise from ongoing renovations (or other rooms).
  • There's no spa on-site, and the fitness center is small.

Authenticity

Known as a "museum hotel," Villa Real features an art and archaeology collection you can admire in its common spaces. Peruse the Roman mosaics and statues, plus Apulian vessels from Magna Graecia. This exhibition is one of the most important private collections in Spain.

Location

Enjoy an ideal location within the romantic Literary Quarter while still being steps away from all the big sites, including the Neptune Fountain, El Retiro Park, Prado Museum, and Puerta del Sol. Many rooms overlook the picturesque Plaza de las Cortes, where the Spanish Parliament is located.

Rooms & Bathrooms

Choose from superior rooms and suites, all following the hotel's theme of timeless decor that channels the building's 19th-century history. Some overlook the plaza below, while others add private terraces with sun loungers. Standard amenities across all rooms include a mini-bar with complimentary soft drinks refreshed daily, a Nespresso coffee machine, marble-floored bathrooms, and toiletries by The White Company.

Amenities

The hotel has a rooftop with a small plunge pool and a seasonal pool bar serving drinks, and there's a small fitness room on the sixth floor. A lobby lounge displays some of the hotel's art collection, including ancient Roman and Syrian mosaic paintings dating back to the 2nd and 6th centuries CE. Villa Real is dog-friendly, and travelers can purchase a package that includes a dog bed, food bowl, water bowl, and an assortment of treats and toys.

Family-Friendliness

Children are welcome, although the hotel hosts more couples or single travelers than families. Babies and kids under three stay for free. Travelers with children should opt for the Family Room, which sleeps up to four people, or book two connecting Superior Double Rooms. The hotel isn't stroller-friendly, as there are steps to reach the elevator.

Other Highlights

Enjoy an extensive breakfast buffet in an elegant dining room downstairs. For other meals, you can dine at the hotel's bar and restaurant, East 47. On the first floor, it has a full bar and outdoor seating, and on the second floor,  the restaurant serves tapas and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. The rooftop bar, open in summer, offers snacks and drinks by the plunge pool.

Very comfortable, elegant hotel not far from the main train station (15 minute walk), the Prado (10 minutes), Reina Sofia (15 minutes), and on the edge of the old historical centre. Great location, comfortable rooms. A bit noisy at night between yelling drunk young folks and city service trucks, but you are in the middle of a big city so sort of expected.

The breakfast was very generous, and their coffee was better than the machines at other hotels- seemed fresh made. The restaurant in the hotel was good though expensive compared to the many other places you could eat.
Our room was very spacious. Good choice!
