Summary of the trip planning conversation
Hi, welcome to kimkim! I'm Chris and I'll be your kimkim specialist for your trip to Iceland.
Here is a 8-9 day itinerary that may work perfectly for your trip. I can customize it further for you. You will start in Reykjavik where you can explore the downtown area and visit some of the museums before you drive north to Glymur falls and Borgarnes, where you can learn more about the settlement age of Iceland (971-1030) at the Settlement Center. Then you will enter the volcanic Snaefellsnes Peninsula, where you can also go into a lava cave. Then you will continue to the south coast for waterfalls, black sand beaches, and glaciers where you can join a glacier walk and a crystal ice cave tour. Finally, it ends along the Golden Circle where you can go snorkeling between the tectonic plates at Silfa in Thingvellir National Park. There are a few hotsprings and pools along the route, and you can stop at the Blue Lagoon on your way out towards the airport.
This look terrific. I would like to review with my daughter over the weekend and we will provide additional input. Do you have any lodging and dining suggestions? My daughter is a sommelier as well as her Master Cicerone Certification so it would be fun to enjoy wines / beers from the region as available.
Thank you very much, Chris. We are quite excited about this adventure!
Oh wow, your daughter is quite the expert! I can make some recommendations for a number of good craft beer places in Reykjavik, and will also find some good places to enjoy wine as well.
I will put together some lodging ideas as well, do you have a style or target budget I should try to adhere to? For example, in some of the smaller areas most of the lodging options are guesthouses, some with shared bathroom facilities.
I can make the car rental and accommodation arrangements for you, that's part of the service that kimkim provides in addition to the custom itinerary and suggestions.
Great! Aside from a heater, we want to be certain there is at least one USB port in the vehicle. :)
If you would like, you can make a deposit at this point and I will secure everything that has free cancellation options at this time, and can wait on the others until you have discussed.
Sounds great. My daughter doesn't think we necessarily need an SUV for just the two of us. She feels like we could get by with a Subaru or similar small car that would drive well in the snow. Your thoughts? I am comfortable driving larger vehicles as I presently drive a full-sized 4 wheel drive vehicle. In the meantime, I'll add my payment details this evening within the link you've provided. Suffice it to say we are so very excited! :)
There are compact options available as well. All cars will have winter tires, but it's not necessarily the case that the compacts will have 4WD (the SUV will). If you are find with 2WD and snow tires, I can get that option for you instead.
Would you mind terribly to check the options? Also - I realized last night enjoying my seat warmers that having seat warmers would be terrific. Certainly not a deal breaker but cool if possible.
Yes, I can look for the options for you.
Ok, how about something like this:
- 2/16 - Reykjavik (central place)
- 2/17 - Reykjavik (same hotel)
- 2/18 - Glymur Falls, to Snaefellsnes Peninsula
- Hike to Glymur Falls, start of Snaefellsnes Peninsula
- 2/19 - Snaefelsnes Peninsula (same hotel as 2/18)
- Some short hikes through lava fields and along the rocky basalt cliffs, black sand beaches.
- Optional lava cave tour.
- 2/20 - Golden Circle
- snorkel at silfra fissure
- 2/21 - Vik
- Dyrhólaey arch, black sand beaches, and waterfalls of south coast (Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss)
- 2/22 - Vik (or closer to Skaftafell)
- Skaftafell hiking, glacier walk, and/or ice cave tour. Also stop at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon
- 2/23 - Reykjavik
- Drive back to Reykjavik, explore more in afternoon/evening
- 2/24 - Departure
- Morning in Reykjavik, Blue Lagoon, and explore more or Reykjanes peninsula if more time
We like the options you are proposing – would like to secure sleeping accommodations asap.
Hi yes, I can put together the updated itinerary and the route, and will begin making sleeping reservations (I will book places with free cancellation/changes where available so that we can still make some adjustments).
FANTASTIC! Give me a little time to review. Whohoo! We are both extremely excited.
Alrighty! I think that will then secure all lodging needs. I scheduled a glacial hike/ice cave tour and today or tomorrow we will schedule snorkeling and possibly horseback riding. It would be great if we could extend our stay but too many responsibilities on the home front to shirk.
If you like, I can make the reservations for the snorkeling and a horseback riding tour for you, it's part of the service that we offer :)
Hello Chris. We are very excited that our departure day is nearly here! We appreciate all your help and will send photos when we return.
Have a great time!
