Hotel Reviews
Dís Cottages
Grundarfjordur

Make sure you specify that you want to stay in one of the cottages. They apparently have a studio apartment above a garage that isn’t clearly noted when you make a reservation.

Authenticity & Character
The views are what makes this worth considering for a stay.
Location
Beautiful view across the fjord and out toward the open ocean. Nothing nearby though. So be sure to bring food and water.

Hotel Holt—The Art Hotel
Reykjavík

The hotel’s bountiful leather seating in their common areas is the highlight. The art is eclectic and bountiful, too. The hotel is a bit dated but overall comfortable for a short stay. And they have free parking for guests, which was a nice benefit.

Authenticity & Character
The artwork is indeed everywhere and the wood paneled common areas and their plentiful leather seating are great.
Location
It’s set in a residential area just outside of the downtown area. Convenient to get to all the sites with a short walk.
Staff
Gabriella who checked me in also helped me find a place for dinner the first night, which was much appreciated.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The walls are thin apparently and so sound from one’s neighbors is an issue. A white noise app on your phone should mask it though. Some of the carpeting on stairwells is worn through. Nit picking perhaps but the hotel does show its age.
Hrafnavellir Guest House
Hornafjörður (Hofn)

The individual cabins are very nice and comfortable. Great views! They have staff onsite and the small lounge area is open and serves drinks until 10 PM or so.

Authenticity & Character
The cabins are newer and very comfortable. Great views back toward the Batman Mountain, too.
Location
About 20 kilometers beyond Hofn. So either eat dinner before you arrive or be mindful that it’s about a 40 minute drive back to town. During the summer they do serve dinner at the guest house. So that would be a convenient option.
Staff
Such a wonderful hostess greeted me and prepared a delicious breakfast for me the following morning.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Black Beach Suites
Vik I Myrdal

Beautiful setting and very nice room with a view.

Authenticity & Character
Modern facilities. So not a lot of character but very nicely appointed room.
Location
The hotel is located on the west side of the mountains that sit above Vik but is close enough that driving into Vik for dinner was easy.
Staff
Staff was polite and helpful.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Comfortable bed and nice shower. Quite a bit of room, too. With a nice deck.
Buubble Hotel Hrosshagi
Bláskógabyggd

Had the skies been clear and the aurora visible this would’ve been a great stay. 😉 The bubble is comfortable but bare bones. The bed is comfortable and the heated blanket was nice (until it stopped working during the night). Bathroom facilities require a walk and sometimes a wait. So just be aware if this is a potential concern.

Authenticity & Character
It’s a unique concept to sleep inside an air inflated bubble!
Location
Even though the setting is in a small forest there is light pollution to the north, I take it, from the town?
Staff
No on-site staff. Not really a big issue but something to be aware of.
Cleanliness & Comfort
It’s hard to heat a bubble in winter. 😉

Hotel was in a perfect location. Our flight wasn't until 5pm and the hotel allowed a late checkout until 2pm for a small fee. This allowed us to do an activity during the day and go back to shower before leaving for the airport. It is 7 minutes from the airport and its in a little town with restaurants close by. The room had everything we needed and the lounge area is nice. The restaurant was fine. It was too rainy and cold to use the roof top hot tub, but it was a nice amenity.

Hotel was nice. The room was great and we enjoyed the lake view. It was very windy and rainy during our stay so we didn't get to enjoy the outside. The breakfast was good. I really liked this hotel. The rooms are in clusters of buildings and you can either walk or drive to the main building for the restaurant. We had 2 hot tubs for our building. They were empty upon arrival, but they quickly filled them after a call to the front desk. The breakfast was excellent. Room was one of the largest we stayed in and we appreciated the lounge area with kitchen so we didn't have to sit in the room all evening.

This was my favorite hotel of the 5 we stayed in. It was beautifully decorated and in an absolutely stunning location. The room was perfect and we had a perfect view of the black church from our window. There's a lovely lounge with fantastic views for having a drink or playing cards at night. The restaurant was fine but we were there for 2 nights and the menu was the same both nights. The chocolates at the front desk are a nice touch!

We only saw one whale and we pretty much followed him around for 2 hours. The weather was very cold, windy and rainy, so the dry suits helped us stay warm and dry. Rough seas were expected due to the weather and the tour operator helpfully offered sea sickness pills for free. The tour did a good job - we just didn't see much and returned to the marina an hour early.

The weather was very rainy and our van got stuck in the snow/slush 3 times on the way to the glacier. Other vehicles had to tow us out. The driver worked very hard and ended up shoveling tires out several times, but didn't provide us with much in the way of updates on what was going on. This turned the trip out to the ice cave into 2 1/2 hours. There was no bathroom available and the entire trip took 5 hours. By the time we got back to the parking area, it was 9pm and all of the restaurants were closed and we still had an hour drive to our hotel. Thankfully, the lovely people at Kronen (the grocery store), allowed us to dash in and quickly buy something right as they were closing. The ice cave was also very small. The guide said that it was usually longer, but the recent snow had closed part of it off. I honestly don't think it was worth it under the conditions, but the hike on the glacier and being inside the ice cave was cool and a unique experience.

Title: The Perfect Balance of Freedom and Support in Iceland

We had an incredible experience working with Gummi for our week-long self-guided driving tour in Iceland. From the very beginning, the planning process was seamless and genuinely enjoyable. Gummi took the time to listen to what we wanted and crafted a flexible itinerary that perfectly matched our travel style.

The materials he provided - detailed itinerary, driving directions, and helpful notes - gave us the confidence to explore independently while still feeling supported in an unfamiliar country. It was exactly the balance we were hoping for.

During the trip, Gummi was always available to answer questions and help us adjust plans when needed - especially when extreme weather forced a couple of changes. His responsiveness and expertise made all the difference.

Our most memorable activity (though it is hard to choose!) was the Ice Cave tour with Siggi.

This truly was a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and we are so grateful for Gummi’s guidance and care. We would absolutely work with him again and recommend him without hesitation.

Kim Kim's Lava Tour guide Guðmundur Óli (Gummi as he is known) was extremely attentive with planning, our trip, always available and prompt to reply to questions on chat at all hours. When the weather got rough while in Iceland, Gummi was quick to rearrange our itinerary so that none of our sightseeing stops were missed, even moving reservations for dinning and scheduled tours/spas. Gummi was there for spur of the moment phone calls as well, alerting us to the ever changing weather and road conditions. Although some of the stops along the way felt a little rushed, we managed to fit everything including the all important thermal bath and spa stops. Our only regret is that we never met him in person to thank him for all his hard work.
Highly recommended for those who like independence when tripping but also want the insight of a native planner to make sure they hit all the high spots and help with unexpected events.

You can't predict Iceland's unpredictable weather, and some outdoor activities were canceled due to a blizzard. Nick and Maria were quick to adjust our itinerary. Our car rental's AI system still had glitches even after being turned off. I contacted Nick, who immediately reached out to the car rental company, and within minutes, we knew it was safe to drive. Our safety was the top priority, and with our expert team of Noga, Maria, and Nick, every question and concern was answered instantly. We can't praise our dedicated team of Noga, Maria, and Nick enough! 🥰

Hotel Reviews
Blue Hotel Fagrilundur
Bláskógabyggd

We stayed two nights at the Blue Hotel. Our room was nice, clean, and comfortable enough for two people. They offered breakfast, which they called continental-style, but it was definitely more than that. They had a great coffee machine that served everything from lattes to espressos to hot chocolate. They also had bacon, beans, and a scrambled egg station for hot food. The breakfast included the usual cereals, yogurt, meats and cheeses, along with a variety of breads and mini pancakes with different toppings. There were hot tubs outside, and many guests used them. The hotel provided each guest with a fluffy robe and slippers, which was a nice touch.

Authenticity & Character
The Blue Hotel had a typical minimalist Scandinavian style, yet it was comfortable. Their reception area and breakfast room were in a separate building, designed in a more log-cabin style, but very charming.
Location
There was a charming restaurant called Mika across the street, and we dined there both nights. The tomato farm was next door, and we had lunch at the new wine bar and cafe. We shared a delicious appetizer and their famous tomato soup with bread. Location was great as it was within 15 minutes of waterfalls, geysers, and our lagoon to take a wonderful soak.
Staff
All of the staff were friendly and eager to assist.

Our room was sufficient and offered enough space for two. It was clean and comfortable. I still can't get over not having a top sheet or washcloths. It must be a European thing, and I will remember to pack washcloths. The staff was excellent. When we needed a cab, we just went to the front desk; they pressed a button, and a cab driver arrived in the lobby to pick us up within minutes. Breakfast was included with our stay. There was a variety of cereals, yogurts, meats, and cheeses, wonderful bread including their rye bread, a tasty tuna salad, and I happened to like pickled herring, which was available every morning. They also had hard-boiled eggs and some fruit. It was definitely enough to start your day and get you through.

Authenticity & Character
This appeared to be a contemporary hotel. It had an elevator, a breakfast room, and a place for happy hour, but no food was served after breakfast.
Location
It could have been more centrally located. Reykjavik is a walkable city, but we had severe winds and blowing snow, which made it a little more difficult to walk to the areas we wanted to visit.
Staff
The staff was friendly, kind, and personable, and their English was flawless. I needed medication kept refrigerated, and they accommodated me.

We had an incredible experience working with Gummi. From start to finish, the itinerary was thoughtfully planned, detailed, and perfectly tailored to our travel style. We gave him full rein, and he absolutely delivered.

The hotel selections were excellent—each one unique, comfortable, and well-located for our route. The car rental process was seamless, which made our self-drive trip easy and stress-free.

What really stood out was the level of detail in the itinerary. He included preliminary driving routes for each day, which made planning and navigation so much easier. Beyond the main highlights, he also provided specific tips and directions to hidden waterfalls, scenic viewpoints, and lesser-known stops that we never would have found on our own. Those moments truly made the trip special..

He also provided fantastic restaurant recommendations in every region we visited and booked a few really fun excursions.

Over 8 days, we drove from Reykjavík through the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Golden Circle, Vík, and all the way to the southeast near Höfn. The route flowed perfectly and allowed us to experience Iceland at our own pace.

Even more impressive was his attentiveness during unexpected weather—he checked in and made sure we were safe and well-prepared, which we really appreciated.

Highly recommend for anyone looking for a well-organized, personalized, and truly memorable Iceland experience.

We mostly enjoyed this hotel but I have some mixed feelings about it. The rooms were dated and dark but comfortable. The surroundings were beautiful. The staff at the desk were competent and efficient. They were not rude. There were a couple of things that seemed more difficult and frustrating than they needed to be but nothing that wasn't manageable. For instance, the lock on our door was difficult to engage. It took us a minute to lock and unlock our door. It's not something I think about normally during hotel stays. Entering and exiting is normally effortless. This was a bit of a hassle and I still remember. Hotel parking was ample and convenient. The breakfast buffet was wonderful. It offered a wide variety of delicious food. One of the buffet staff from Romania talked with us comfortably. We liked her a lot. We did glimpse the Aurora Borealis here. There is a wonderful sauna and a huge hot tub which accommodates a lot of people. We met other tourists while taking a soak.

If I go back to Iceland I will definitely return to Stykkisholmi and the Hotel Fransiskus. Also, the breakfast buffet was so tastly. The hotel used to be a convent for Catholic Sisters. There were plenty of rock benches to sit on to lounge. The waterfall cascading into the pool added a special element. One long side of the lagoon overlooks the ocean. We had dramatic views of the clouds rolling in. We stayed here about 3 hours. It snowed giant, fluffy snowflakes, then it sleeted before snowing some more!!! It did not seem crowded. We had an action packed itinerary for Iceland and we did all that we could. Some of our favorite memories were just seeing the country's landscape and the horses. We did sadly miss snorkeling the Silfra, the Ice Cave and the helicopter ride but there was plenty to do without those. We did run into some bad weather here and there which caused for a stressful driving day so the weather and road app came in very handy.

We loved all of the Lagoons that we visited but the Sky Lagoon was our favorite.

Our Dog sledding adventure was a little anticlimactic but we are glad we did it. Our favorite waterfall area was Hraunfossar and the Lava Cave was cool. I feel like we could have skipped the peninsula tour and made our way towards Vik a little sooner. We hit bad weather on Day 4 which was very stressful. So by the time we got to the National Park we decided to skip the Silfra Snorkel and all that the park had to offer and opted to go to town and have some adult beverages and chat with some locals.

As far as accommodations, the Bubble hotel and the Panorama Glass Lodges were definitely the highlight for us. However, I would suggest you find the Panorama Glass lodge while it is still daylight. Both of the Center Hotels in Reykjavik had bars outside of our window that played loud music until midnight. I would not suggest people stay here if they have an early day the next morning. We were fine with it but I can see where other travelers might not be. Front desk clerks were very helpful.

The snowmobile tour was such a good time. On day 6, we did not make it to Reynisfjara Beach or to the Reynisdrangar columns due to road closure. By the time we got to day 7, we all agreed that we did not have it in us for a 5 hour drive and a 3-4 hour tour so we took the day off and enjoyed our hotel, a game room at another hotel and the town of Vik. I do wish we had made our way to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach and the Ice Caves. I am not sure what to suggest here as this was a super long day. Maybe have people drive closer to the area and stay the night then wake up and do the tours and drive out. I am sad we missed it.

Day 8, there was 100% chance of rain but we did the ATV tour anyway. We did get soaked to the core and froze our booties off but we really enjoyed it. I think if the weather is bad then it is inevitable that you will get wet and be cold but do it anyway. It is a gorgeous view of the beach and ocean. The tour guides were awesome. As a matter of fact, we liked all of the tour guides we encountered: Dog sledding, snow mobile, all of them.

The weather was bad on day 9 with wind gusts up to 45 mph. So sadly, we missed the helicopter tour. We did go to the Sky Lagoon and loved it.

Gudmundur was a great asset to us every day. I really enjoy conversing with him throughout the entire process from planning to our arrival and our departure. He warned us of weather and roads and helped with cancellations and recommendations of where we could go when we skipped our planned activities. The skipping of activities was for sure my lack of planning rest days for my group. He included everything that I asked from the beginning added in all of the exciting things to do and see.

This is my 3rd trip with Kim Kim and it did not disappoint. Iceland was amazing. I would highly suggest it to my friends and family.

Northern Lights- the tour was not what we expected but we feel very lucky that we saw a spectacular display! The guide shared very little information about the lights, constellations or how to take a good pictures. The concept is great but was not the best experience.
Dog sledding and Sky Lagoon- fabulous!

It was a rather long drive and our last day. It was raining. There is good shopping! If it was a pretty day, I think a hike would have been a great addition to the day.

This was probably my favorite activity. Carlos, our guide, was terrific! The hike up to the view point was great. They did have spikes for us to use. The big tires on jeep allowed us to navigate glacier river beds.

It was a long day especially navigating the weather so we omitted this activity. We were concerned about the roads and wanted to get to hotel. Waterfalls are always great to see! We did like our loop drive for the Peninsula from our hotel- Budir Hotel. The road over the mountain was closed.

The weather was cold, snowy and very windy! On a pretty day, I would have wanted more time than we planned to explore hiking trails and the sites. Thank you for your review, Judy! I'm so glad your group had a wonderful trip in Iceland. The Super Jeep tour is also one of my favorite activities and I'm glad you were able to enjoy the beautiful Þórsmörk Nature Reserve. Thanks for providing your favorite moments along with some helpful feedback.

Blue car rental no longer has shuttle service. It is a short walk and not a problem but you may want to change instructions on how to pick up your car. The airport discontinued all rental car shuttles is my understanding.

Hotels - I liked them all - in great locations, clean and very nice people. My favorite was Angel Rangá but they were all nice and The Glass house was a wonderful experience but one night is plenty for travelers not carrying food, etc.

Activities - Our evening to see the Northern Lights (I think the guides’s name was Ines) was successful . We definitely saw a beautiful display! The guide was not great. We basically drove out of town and stopped at the side of a road and got out and looked up w our phones. There was no instruction or hot chocolate and pastries. We just stood in the road. I thought the guide was a bit rude. A few times we had to move away from oncoming cars. But we did see the northern lights.

The dogsledding day was fun! Very nice and informative people.

I loved the SkyLagoin experience - they upgraded our passes so we had private dressing rooms . Just a really nice experience.

I loved walking the the Cliffs - gorgeous! I was a bit concerned as I do not like heights but the path is plenty far from the edge and it was a great hike.

I could pass on the geothermal bakery but that is probably just a personal choice. The people did a great job and it was nice gathering to eat the bread at the end.

The jeep day (Rangár Ding) was the overall best experience for me. Riding to remote places with Carlos giving information while driving in creeks over sand bars and lava rocks and just getting to see the gorgeous views without a lot of people was great. Lunch was good, and Carlos did an exceptional job.

Our trip ended with a canceled flight due to bad weather. We ended up staying in the Exeter hotel which is also a very nice place if you want another hotel to add to your list.

We had several days of really bad weather where driving was a challenge for us southern folks! You did a good job preparing us but you can not stress it enough. We hated missing the whale watching and really did not get to see much of the National Park due to the weather.

The overall experience was definitely 5⭐️ Your instructions were clear and accurate, you always answered our texts quickly and were helpful. The choices you guided Becky and Rosie through were great. It was a lovely week -

Wow, where do I begin!

Reached out to KimKim a few months before our planned trip to Iceland planned for early February.

Adam was assigned as our personal concierge during the planning process and we couldn't have asked for a better, more informative guide to things to do in Iceland! All of the accommodations, excursions, etc mentioned below were set up by Adam and they were perfect.

Basically the process is you give your concierge an idea of rough dates you will be in Iceland, things you want to do or see, and a rough budget and they start the process of giving you choices so you can fine tune your itinerary to fit your needs. I am usually the travel planner but was really nice having someone take the reigns.

We only had 6 days so stayed in the South. We stayed in 3 primary locations -- Blue Lagoon, Vik, and Reykjavik.

Blue Lagoon -- Blue Lagoon is only about 20 minutes from the airport so a great place to go after the long flight from the US. We splurged and stayed 2 nights at the Retreat at the Blue Lagoon and it was worth it! Felt like being in a spa environment 24 hours a day. Literally walk around all day in your fluffy robe, take dips in a private area of the lagoon an much as you like, get spa treatments included in the stay (do The Ritual!), got an in-water massage, and ate at the onsite restaurants including Michelin Star restaurant Moss where I proposed to my girlfriend our last night there (luckily she said yes :-)) Wonderful place to relax and get used to the new time zone while enjoying one of Iceland's iconic thermal pools. True luxury experience.

Vik -- We had rented a nice little 4 wheel drive SUV set up through Adam and so set out to Vik on the most southern tip of Iceland as a jumping off point for some excursions in the area. Adam had sent along driving directions in google maps that included stops along the way to see waterfalls, museums, and other sites along the route which was very convenient -- so nice to be able to come and go and not be just one a 30 or 40 getting on and off the tour bus which we saw plenty of. Weather was actually really nice so road conditions were superb luckily. Stayed at Black Beach Suites just outside of Vik and it was really great, onsite bar and restaurant so we could wind down each day with a drink or two. We actually included Vik on our itinerary to get away from light pollution to see the Northern Lights but unfortunately it was cloudy the whole time we were there (apparently Vik is the rainiest spot in Iceland!) so saw none there. We went on 2 excursions while in Vik -- Ice Cave Tour and Snowmobile on the glacier. Both were freaking awesome, would recommend them to anyone wanting to get out and about in the Vik area.

Reykjavik -- After Vik we drove back to Reykjavik, this time on a little bit different course which included more places to stop and see the sites. Stayed at Hotel Borg which was centrally located to everything. Walked around and saw the sites including the famous church and road leading to it, finally saw the Northern Lights right from the harbor in Reykjavik so get to check that off the bucket list. Drove over to the Sky Lagoon on our last day to get one last thermal pool fix which was nice. Great way to calm down before flying back home.

Overall I cannot recommend Iceland and KimKim enough, especially our concierge Adam! He was in contact beforehand, helping us set up our packed itinerary so we got to see the maximum amount in our short time there and was available while we were there for the few things that came up (also, if your concierge is not available due to days off or hours they will put you in touch with others if needed). Just a great experience, will use KimKim on my next trip to Iceland or other places they can help and recommend them to anyone interested!
