Peru - Backpack Inca Trail to Machu Pichu

A couple looking to visit Peru in May 2018

“My wife and I would like the experience to hike and backpack the Inca Trail all the way to Machu Pichu and maybe able to see the Amazon from Peru. We were thinking in arriving in Lima, then going to Cuzco, stay in the Sacred Valley and start the hiking with the backpacking experience to Machu Pichu. Then come down in the trail. Then go to Amazon from Peru and stay there for 2 days 1 night.”

James Mackender, a local specialist from Peru, helped this traveler put together a customized itinerary.

Summary of the trip planning conversation

Below are some useful excerpts from the trip planning conversation
Welcome to kimkim and thanks for your request! Sounds like a great trip, and we'd be happy to help put this together for you.

A quick note - Inca Trail permits are sold out until October but we can consider the Salkantay Trek which is quite similar and a better overall experience, in some ways, given the Inca Trail is quite crowded. (I'll share an article on this trek, below.) It also takes you to Machu Picchu on the fifth day and through some incredible landscapes along the way.

For the Amazon, sounds like a great idea and it will provide a nice contrast after a week in the Sacred Valley.

I'm going to invite one of our local specialists in Cusco to help put a plan in place and provide some idea around pricing. They may have some additional questions for you as they get started, and don't hesitate to share your feedback along the way.

Expect another reply back within 24 hours. I'll be on standby in case I can help with.

Best,
Alex

Nice to meet you. My name is James, I work for Quechua Treks in Cusco, Peru.

Your trip idea sounds great, we have a tour itinerary that fits what you'd like to do, I'll attach below for you to look through.

Alex is right that permits have sold out for the Inca Trail this year, but there is availability for next year. We would probably need to secure these in the coming months.

There are alternative treks too, as Alex highlighted and they can offer incredible experiences & still take you to Machu Picchu, the Inca trail is still a very good trek also. I could show you some alternatives if you wanted to look at those.

The plan I will attach is a 12 day tour, starting in Lima and then flying you straight to the Amazon for 5 days. After the Amazon you'd fly into Cusco for a day & half roughly to acclimatise then we'd begin the Inca Trail. Let me know what you think of our plan and we discuss some details later if it would be of interest to you.

Best regards,
James
