Introducing Peru

Peru is a country steeped in culture and natural beauty. From the lush Amazon Jungle to the sacred peaks of the Andes, down whitewater rivers that carve their way toward the South Pacific, Peru has endless regions and highlights to explore.

Where should I go?
Most travelers come to Peru to see Machu Picchu, the iconic ruins perched high above the Urubamba River, yet this is just a small glimpse into what Peru has to offer. One could spend over a week exploring the other ruins of the Sacred Valley, a corridor of villages, mountain peaks, and hiking routes above the Urubamba River. Travelers can also experience the Peruvian Amazon along the border of Brazil, which gives birth to many of the mighty tributaries of the Amazon River, full of wildlife, indigenous cultures, and pristine wilderness. The north of Peru, still undiscovered by mainstream tourism, rewards any traveler who ventures off the beaten path with untouched ruins and vistas. Then down along Peru's West Coast, past beautiful beaches with year-round surfing, you'll arrive at the mysterious Nasca lines, immense geoglyphs carved into the desert sand. Learn more

When is the best time to visit?
Every region in Peru is a bit different. May is one of the best months to visit the Sacred Valley - it marks the end of the rainy season, and travelers can beat the crowds that arrive from June to August. September to November are the best months for wildlife viewing in the Amazon, and November offers some of the best surfing along the Peruvian coast. Learn more

Things to do in Peru
Peru is a great destination for outdoor activities as well as cultural exploration. Trekking, rafting, and biking are all popular activities. The Sacred Valley offers some of the best outdoor activity options in Peru - you can learn more here. If you're looking for a more relaxed trip focused on culture and history, get inspired by these itinerary ideas.

Getting around in Peru
Distances in Peru are very large, so domestic flights (for example from Lima to Cusco to reach Machu Picchu) are typically part of itineraries in Peru. Learn more

How many days do you need to visit Peru?
No matter how much time you have in Peru, whether it's just a few days or a few weeks, this country can offer some unforgettable experiences. With just five days, it's possible to visit the national highlights of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. With a week or more the experiences just get better, allowing you time for historic cities and off-the-beaten-path adventures. Learn more

Our trip to Peru absolutely exceeded expectations.

From the beginning, Shawna was a fantastic partner in helping us plan the best itinerary for our family. She answered all our questions quickly and thoroughly, providing excellent guidance as we weighed different options. She helped us create a balanced itinerary filled with unique, authentic experiences.

While all our guides were terrific, Abel - our guide in Cusco and the Sacred Valley - was in a category of his own. He went above and beyond, helping us navigate unexpected flight issues and some altitude sickness our daughter experienced when we first arrived in Cusco. He was incredibly knowledgeable about Inca and Quechua society and was able to explain things in an accessible that engaged our kids and got them excited about the history. He truly made our trip special.

From the food tour in Lima, to the dune buggy adventure in the Paracas desert, to exploring Ollyantaytambo and Machu Picchu, to visiting the local Cusco markets and cooking authentic Peruvian cuisine with a chef at her restaurant, it was an unforgettable vacation. I highly recommend Peruvian Soul.

Booking with KimKim was the right decision. This is one of the most stress-free trips we have ever taken. All the annoying logistics, lodging, drivers, guides, and excursions were handled by KimKim and transitions were seamless. We simply provided our budget and a rough idea of what we wanted to see. This saved me hours and hours of planning time which I definitely did not have.
Our two main guides were Julio and Willy. Both were friendly, knowledgeable, professional and willing to take on the burden of working out a few kinks in our itinerary (I changed my mind about an excursion and Julio handled it perfectly).
We especially loved the walking food tour in Barranca, the wonderful breakfasts at the hotels, all our lodgings (in Cuzco, Sacred Valley, and Puno) were top notch, the Moray salt ponds and archaeological park, Ollantaytambo, the floating reed island (clearly geared toward tourists but the family was so sweet I’ll cut the experience some slack), visiting with Lupe and her home stay on the Lake Titicaca’s Laquina Peninsula and of course the Inca Trail and Macchu Picchu were life changing.

A few suggestions:
1. Warn clients in advance that the customs line arriving in Lima can be very long and do not stop at the bathroom for several minutes upon arrival while 100’s of other travelers stream by. We probably added an hour to our 2 hour wait because we had no clue the customs cue came before baggage claim.
2. A 1-week heads up that 2nd payment is due. Even the most organized people need a warning. I was caught off guard.
3. I wish there was an option to pay tips in advance?
4. Not sure about the camelid farm. It was great to see and learn about all the various Andean camelids but afterwards we felt uncomfortable and pressured being the only two people ushered into the high end store with 5 employees hovering and watching our every move. It was obvious they expected us to purchase goods, but this is one time I wish there had been more tourists.
