It was so wonderful to get to meet Ashley in Hanoi at the end of our trip so we could provide feedback, reminisce over the many highlights, and thank her in person for the excellent work she did on our behalf. Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge
Mu Cang Chai

We had a pleasant but cold stay at Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge. The accommodations were charming and the hosts were very friendly and attentive to our needs, but the thin walls on our room were a big challenge for the cold front that brought temperatures down to the mid single digits. We would recommend a stay here, but be prepared if the weather turns cold!

Le Champ Tu Le Resort Hot Spring and Spa

Le Champ was one of the unexpected highlights of our trip. The location is magical, and it was such a delight to soak in the hot springs after a long day of travel. Extra points for having a beautiful cave to explore right on the resort grounds! We wish we had more time to enjoy this wonderful facility.

Sin Chai Ecolodge

We loved this beautiful little resort on the outskirts of Sapa! The grounds and rooms are immaculate, the views are lovely and the food was terrific. We especially appreciated being outside the craziness that is Sapa town. Highly recommended!

Hue Ecolodge

We had a nice but brief stay at the Hue Ecolodge. The grounds were immaculate, the staff quite friendly, and the food was very good. We had a busy itinerary and poor weather, so didn't take advantage of the on-site amenities like the pool and spa, nor did we have a chance to explore the neighborhood. But as a place to spend a night it met our needs just fine.

Homestay Bac Ha

We had a delightful homestay during our one night in Bac Ha. The grounds are pretty, the views are nice and the rooms were quite comfortable. We especially appreciate how they went out of their way to meet our food needs, driving us to a "tourist-friendly" restaurant for lunch and cooking us a delicious (and HUGE) dinner. We lingered around the dinner table late into the night getting to know our hosts using Google translate.

Chay Lap Farmstay
Phong Nha

We had a delightful stay at the Chay Lap Farmstay. We loved the fact that the property is out in the country, away from the rapidly gentrifying Phong Nha town. We took advantage of the free bicycle rental to ride around the area, and the free kayak rental to escape the heat of the day out on the river. We also rented their e-bikes for a day at a very reasonable rate to explore the area. (A visit to Paradise Cave and a ride on the 'ferry' into town are both must-dos!) The Farmstay was an excellent place from which to see the amazing Phong Nha Ke Bang area.

Cozy An Boutique Hotel Hoian
Hoi An

We had a very nice 3-night stay at the Cozy An. We appreciated that it was in a quieter part of town while being close enough for us to walk to the more touristy areas. The rooms were nice, with a small balcony, and the food in the restaurant was plentiful and delicious. We took advantage of the free use of their bicycles to ride around town and ride out to the beach. We appreciated the one on one time we received from the concierge, and all her recommendations for what to see and where to shop. While in the end we didn't agree with all her assessments, they gave us a great place to start. We would definitely recommend staying here.

Day Trip to Ba Vi Countryside & Cooking Class
Day Trip to Ba Vi Countryside & Cooking Class
Hanoi

We spent our first full day in Vietnam on this tour of the Ba Vi. It was a nice introduction to Vietnam. The highlights of this tour were getting to speak with a former north Vietnam soldier about his experience during the American war and his perspectives on his country and relations with the US today, and the AMAZING lunch we had. However, the cooking class was a little disappointing - we were taught to make wraps for amazing spring rolls and got to make a salad, but the food was mostly prepped in advance and we didn't do any actual cooking. Also disappointing was the bike ride in the countryside, which was much shorter than we would have liked. Relative to some of the awesome days to come this tour was fine, just not one of the highlights.

Mu Cang Chai

The drive from Tu Le to Mu Cang Chai over the Khau Pha Pass was quite beautiful. Unfortunately, the March weather was hazy and overcast, so the views were not quite as lovely as they likely are at other times of the year. Once in Mu Cang Chai we had a tasty lunch and then headed into the hills for a walk through rice fields and a local village. We had a delightful encounter with a group of older Hmong women, from whom we bought textiles and crafts. After the long drive we were glad to stretch our legs and have a first person encounter with the countryside.

Half Day Sapa Village Hike
Sapa

The drive from Mu Cang Chai to Sapa was long and winding. There were many sights along the way, though low clouds and hazy conditions detracted from some of the scenic beauty. We had a bit of trouble finding a place to stop for lunch, but in the end found a small restaurant that met our needs. We drove through the heart of the tourist area in Sapa town, getting enough of a sense for the place to be glad we were staying outside of town. We ended the day by walking from the edge of Sapa town to our homestay in the village of Sin Chai, which took about 90 minutes. It was a nice walk, but much less trekking than we had been led to believe. This was really more of a travel day than an activity day.

Our street food tour of Hoi An was an unexpected delight! After traveling for 3 weeks in vans and on bicycle it was such a delight to zip through the streets like a local on the back of a scooter. Our guide was soft spoken but informative, and he brought us to a nice mix of well-known and back alley food carts and restaurants. We got to try many kinds of foods. While not all were to our liking, we appreciated the opportunity to try them out. This was a great way to spend an evening in Hoi An.

Sapa

Today's activity was the first for our highlight reel. The trek down from Sapa town through Cat Cat village and up into the hill villages was excellent. The route took us through cultivated fields, along jungle paths above a river, and into small villages where we could interact with the locals. The weather was cooperative - the haze even cleared a bit, allowing us to see the tall mountains across the valley - and it was great to have a day without car travel. We especially enjoyed our encounters with the local artists and artisans who produce the beautiful indigo-dyed batiks, embroidered clothing, incense, and other crafts.

Our time in Bac Ha was a bit mixed. After the morning drive from Sapa - in part along the Chinese border - we arrived in Bac Ha for lunch and then a trek into the hills near our homestay. It was interesting to see another mountainous landscape, though this trek lacked the interactions with local we had on previous treks. On Sunday we visited the famed Bac Ha market, which truly was an experience. It was a delight to see a bustling market whose focus was more on meeting the needs of locals than tourists. So many colors, sounds, smells and tastes - a true sensory delight! After market we had lunch at a roadside buffet restaurant that clearly was not geared towards tourists. The food was a little less beautiful than we'd seen elsewhere, but just as delicious. Then it was time for the long drive back to Hanoi.

Our driver was rather aggressive, passing other vehicles on narrow winding roads at times that didn't seem necessary or productive. It made some in our party feel uncomfortable. The van itself was adequate, though became uncomfortable after an extended time. We rode in newer, more comfortable versions of the same vehicle later in our trip - it would have been nice to have the nicer vehicle at this time, given the hours we spent on this part of our tour
Tu Lan Experience Tour

Our caving experience with Oxalis was another trip highlight. We loved the physical activity, especially walking through the village to take in the sights, hiking through the mud in the rain, exploring caves with a headlamp, and swimming through the second cave. We had a great guide and an excellent cohort of fellow travelers to keep us company. The lunch provided on the trail, under a tent in the rain, was amazing considering the conditions it was served under. The only constructive criticism is that we would have liked more information in advance regarding what to bring with us and what clothing to wear. We were given the option of using our own footwear or the boots they provided and didn't understand the options well enough to make an informed decision. (Using their boots - assuming you can find ones that fit - is the clear correct choice.) Also, considering the weather, it would have been nice to have warmer clothing to put on when we stopped for lunch - a wool hat in our dry bag would have made a big difference.

We had a lovely dinner at the home of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Suong. It was very interesting to learn about the history of Hue and the Nguyen dynasty from an expert of that history. We were expecting a group dinner, and were pleasantly surprised that the table was set for only our host and the three of us. The food prepared by the host's 80+ year old mother was AWESOME, both in flavor and presentation. It was a meal we won't soon forget.

Deluxe Hue Sightseeing Full Day Tour - Join tour
Deluxe Hue Sightseeing Full Day Tour - Join tour
Hue

Of all the activities on our trip this one was our least favorite. In general we don't like packaged, pre-defined tours due to their impersonal nature and lack of autonomy, and this tour met our worst stereotypes. There were only 8 of us on the tour, but the jam-packed itinerary left no room for flexibility or meeting the particular needs of group members. Our guide was a lovely man, but he had marginal English skills. He had lots of information he wished to share with us, and it often felt like he was trying to force-feed it to us. It took a lot of energy to understand what he was trying to communicate - and after the first hour or so we stopped listening. We loved the imperial city, but didn't have the opportunity to explore it on our own terms. We liked seeing the pagoda and the tombs, but again would have appreciated more time to just see it at our pace. The lunch was a highlight for us, as the home restaurant had beautiful grounds and delicious food, but it was offset by the stop at the market (unnecessary) and the incense and hat making workshop (read: tourist store). In the end we mostly just felt tired and frustrated.

We started with just the idea of hiking the Inca Trail into Machu Picchu and the number of days we wanted to spend on our trip. KimKim connected us to the incredible Kristy, who put together an amazing itinerary of places that I didn’t know that I would love.. but I did!

What’s more is that when the trail was closed due to mudslides (which we found out at the airport waiting for our flight), Kristy was on it and booked us on the Lares Trail, which was phenomenal. In many ways, better than I expected, as it took us over a mountain and through tiny villages, where we could experience the Peruvian culture.

Highlights of our trip included Rainbow Mountain (a must), the train from Cusco to Puno (a blast!!), Lake Titicaca (such a neat place), Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu.

All of our accommodations were great (Antiguay in Cusco and Inkaterra at Machu Picchu being particular amazing) and we would recommend to others. Perhaps best of all were all the guides and transfers Kristy arranged to make it easy and seamless. Valario in the Sacred Valley and Jose in Puno were really awesome!

We had another change at the end of our trip and we ended up skipping Lima due to some political unrest there. With Kristy’s help we discovered Mancora, a beach town on the Pacific coast of Peru. We stayed in a resort there called Arennas and it turned out to be the perfect relaxing end to such a memorable trip!

Thoughtful Exploration of Komodo and Yogyakarta, but Disjointed Planning

Our recent journey through Indonesia with KimKim featured some outstanding highlights—particularly in Komodo and Yogyakarta—but ultimately fell short of the seamless and well-curated experience we’ve come to expect from the platform.

We began in Bali, where things got off to a shaky start. Although we were met at the airport by both a guide and a driver, we were simply dropped off at our hotel with no further guidance or suggestions for the rest of the day. The following day we had a driver (who was friendly and helpful) but no guide, and were again left to plan our own itinerary. We visited Uluwatu Temple, much of which was unfortunately closed and underwhelming, and Padang Padang Beach, which was uncomfortably crowded. A stop at a luwak coffee plantation ended up being a nice surprise—albeit a bit touristy—but overall, we felt that Bali lacked the thoughtful planning and local insight we were hoping for. In hindsight, we would have preferred to skip it entirely and focus more on Komodo and Yogyakarta.

Komodo, in contrast, was a true standout. Our guide was exceptional, and the experiences—from trekking to see Komodo dragons to snorkeling with manta rays and turtles—were unforgettable. We also loved visiting waterfalls and caves, all of which felt immersive and well-curated.

Yogyakarta offered a mixed experience. Borobudur was beautiful, though we unfortunately purchased the wrong ticket and were unable to access the upper levels to view the carvings. Candi Rejo was a delightful visit, and Prambanan was another high point, enhanced by an excellent guide. The cooking class, while fun, felt somewhat underwhelming. Our visit to the Ramayana Ballet was disappointing—it felt overly touristy and amateurish, with low-quality food. Ironically, we discovered a much more authentic and high-quality ballet performance at the Kraton the following day (after our official itinerary had ended), which made us wish our original tour had included this instead. Fortunately, our local guide in Yogyakarta was incredibly knowledgeable and brought a lot of insight and depth to our experience.

While we appreciated many aspects of this trip, we felt that overall planning could have been stronger. Communication from our specialist, Marc, was inconsistent, and there seemed to be a lack of alignment between him and the local guides. We encountered several discrepancies—such as starting times that didn’t match—and often felt unclear about the daily agenda. In previous trips with KimKim, we've valued the daily suggestions and tailored support from our specialists, which were largely missing here.

More importantly, one of the reasons we turn to KimKim is for thoughtful, curated travel that helps us avoid crowds and overly touristy experiences. Unfortunately, this trip included several stops that felt like classic tourist traps. A more customized and locally-informed itinerary would have made a significant difference. With more attentive planning and better communication, this could have been a truly exceptional trip.

Hi Owen and friends,

First of all, I want to sincerely thank you for choosing to travel with us and for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review. I truly appreciate both your kind words about the highlights of your trip and your constructive feedback regarding the areas that didn’t meet your expectations. I’d like to take this opportunity to respond to your comments—both to provide some context and, where needed, to take full responsibility for anything that could have been clearer or better coordinated.

Your arrival and the first days in Bali:

I completely understand your disappointment with the initial days in Bali. These days were designed as a gentle landing after your long journey, with a driver but no guide service included, allowing you time to rest and explore at your own pace. This was outlined in the proposal and itinerary, and the listed activities were intended as suggestions. That said, I recognize that I could have done more to set expectations more clearly and offer more proactive recommendations to help you make the most of your free time.

Your visit to Uluwatu and Padang Padang:

Thank you for sharing your impressions. While these sites can be beautiful, they are often very crowded, depending on the time of day and season. I generally recommend minimizing time in South Bali’s most touristy areas (like Kuta and Seminyak).

I also want to clarify that we intentionally arranged your accommodation in Jimbaran, rather than Kuta, because Jimbaran offers a more peaceful atmosphere and retains a stronger local identity, far from the mass tourism and overdevelopment that have impacted other parts of the south.
That said, I regret not communicating this approach more explicitly. Had I known you were seeking an even more immersive cultural experience, I would have suggested a very different itinerary focused on inland traditional villages, temple ceremonies, and time with one of our cultural guides.

Komodo – a true highlight:

I'm thrilled to hear that your time in Komodo was a standout experience!

Yogyakarta – a mix of highs and areas for improvement:

Thank you for your detailed feedback. I’d like to clarify a few key points:

- Borobudur access: Current regulations around visiting the upper levels of Borobudur are indeed complex and change frequently. Your itinerary clearly stated that your ticket included access to the surrounding grounds only. This reflects a strong commitment to sustainability and heritage preservation. Although limited access to the upper levels has recently been reintroduced, it requires a special ticket with strict quotas and timed entry. We have chosen not to include this by default, to support conservation efforts and discourage last-minute add-ons that can contribute to the temple’s erosion.

- Ramayana Ballet: I’m sorry the ballet performance did not meet your expectations. I always strive to book the most authentic version available, but the venue rotates between locations such as the Prambanan Open-Air Theater, Purawisata, and occasionally the Kraton, depending on the day and season. On the date of your visit, the most authentic option was not available.

- Candi Rejo and Prambanan: I’m delighted to hear that these visits—and especially your local guide—left a positive impression. Our team is deeply passionate about their work.

Communication and itinerary adjustments:

I want to address your concerns regarding communication and alignment. When preparing trips, my philosophy is to build a structure that allows for flexibility, enabling drivers and guides to adapt to local conditions such as ceremonies, weather, or even your energy levels. In Indonesia, time and plans tend to flow a little differently, and I try to reflect that reality in how we operate. I maintain daily contact with the ground team and empower them to adjust plans when needed, always with your experience in mind. However, I completely understand that these adjustments may have felt uncoordinated without clearer real-time updates from me.

I truly value your honest feedback, and I take it to heart. My goal is always to design trips that are authentic, meaningful, and tailored to each traveler, steering away from mass tourism and offering more personalized, enriching experiences.

That’s why I always provide my direct number to all travelers. You’re welcome to text or call me anytime during your trip if you need suggestions, want to clarify details, or if anything comes up that I can help with. I want to be available to make sure your experience is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Thank you again for your valuable input. Despite the challenges, I hope the beauty of Indonesia—and the people you encountered along the way—left you with lasting memories.

Best wishes,
Marc

(Unfortunately, after the height of the tourist season in October, many ateliers were closed for renovation.

Due to financial constraints, Kimkim recommended we rent a car to travel between some of our destinations. Unaware of the areas conventions around tolls, etc. driving turned out to be a bit hair-raising.

I've used Kimkim before, also for travel in France. That trip too, was excellently conceived and executed. I highly recommend Kimkim!

I would’ve preferred a little bit more transparency about the breakdown in cost. What was your commission rate? Is breakfast always included? Are the tips included or not? Didn’t want to double pay. It’s hard to optimize the price of the trip not knowing where you can improve on pricing. Having used KimKim for the first time, I’ll probably have better questions next time.

Dillon was our tour guide in the Cotswold’s However he was from Wales and I would’ve preferred more local information and history. He was more or less a driver for us for the day as opposed to a guide. He wanted to accommodate us where we wanted to go, but in a lot of cases, we didn’t know where to go.

Alex was very timely in all our transports. We were going to use him on our last free day to give him the business but he said it was going to be $60 an hour for his services plus waiting and an Uber we found out and used was $14. Could that have been an option for us through our entire trip?

The hotels were just as I asked for. Thank you.

Dear Mary,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments—I truly appreciate the time you took to share them.

I’m happy to clarify a few points. Please know that I completely understand your concerns, and throughout the entire planning process I endeavored to provide as much information as possible and remain fully transparent. At the outset of our work on your trip plan, I shared our typical rate structure and explained that our commission varies depending on the activities you choose and the total trip cost. Because our system calculates prices automatically, it can be challenging to pull out a detailed line‑by‑line breakdown, but I’m always here to help interpret any part of it.

Regarding meals, they are not always included—when they are, we make a clear note of it, since each property offers different meal packages. Likewise, tips are never built into our pricing; they remain entirely at your discretion, much as they are in restaurants.

You’re absolutely right that Uber can be a convenient way to get around. In many destinations it works seamlessly, but in a few places it’s either unavailable or occasionally unreliable—even when booked in advance. That’s why we also recommend local taxi or shuttle services as alternatives.

Thank you, too, for your sincere feedback about the guides. I’ll be sure to share your thoughts with our team as we continue to improve our service.

Above all, I hope that despite a few unclear moments, you found joy in your journey and brought home many warm memories. It was truly my pleasure to assist you!
Kimkim is always here whenever you’re ready to plan your next adventure.
Wishing you wonderful travels ahead!

Greg put together a very personalized schedule for our first ever trip to Japan. We had selected to visit Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto/Nara and wanted to see a mix of nature and culture. Greg put together a very personalized schedule for our first ever trip to Japan. We had selected to visit Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto/Nara and wanted to see a mix of nature and culture. Our wish included to stay in traditional Ryokans, to experience a bath in a hot spring area and to have time for some hiking to explore the scenery. Greg tailored a perfect program for us with detailed descriptions for every day of our 10-Day trip. Besides lodging in amazing hotels and Ryokans, Greg took care of all train tickets, entrees to museums and guided tours. Links to Google Maps made the navigation and use of public transportation very easy. Throughout our stay we felt taken care of, with Greg checking in on us on a regular basis.
While I usually plan all of my vacations myself, I believe that Greg's knowledge and professional input provided us with a deeper and more authentic experience in Japan. I highly recommend his services to anyone wishing to explore Japan.

Stunningly beautiful setting. Exceptional food served for breakfast and dinner. Very friendly staff. We especially appreciated the private Onsen, right next to our cottage.

Hotel Tuniberg

the issue I had with this hotel was the location, the staff was very nice, the food at the restaurant was very good, but the location was in the middle of nowhere, with only a gas station across the street. There was really nowhere to go after coming to the hotel for the night, Freiburg is a 15 minute drive away on the highway. The rooms were also very basic. They were clean, but had none of the typical hotel amenities. The bathroom was tiny, there was nowhere to put any toiletries and there were tiny towels and plastic cups (like a kids cup). The parking was also, as my husband said, "the most stressful part of driving each day" bc the parking garage/barn was very tight, need a person directing you so you don't hit anything. The people, however, were kind and the restaurant was good, there was just literally nothing to do there. We took a walk on a short path but it ended at a busy road. Bedding was good!

Oh my word, this gets 10 out of 5 stars, the best 24 hrs of my life, literally! They even let us check out at 3 instead of 12. The pool/spa was fantastic, I will dream of it for years. The views from the pool were spectacular. We were a bit early in the season so one of the trails we hoped to hike was not open and some of other restaurants were not either, but we found another hike, and areas to explore. The buffet was included and AMAZING. We did not have time to enjoy the "private movie screening" for our family bc we wanted to be outside/in the pool. This was the highlight of the trip, highly recommend the splurge. It is pricey but worth it. We had a view of the mountains/cow pastures on one side and lake Lucerne on the other. The amenities included snacks, champagne and a fridge full of beverages including wine. The ferry to Burgenstock is just across from the train station, at Pier 3, and the boat ride is very nice- and the funicular to take you to the restaurant is great also.

the second bed was basically a portable bed against middle of wall with no headboard which isn't very comfortable to read a book or sit in for any length of time, the head of the bed was up against a chair so we slept in it sideways so I could read a book at night, so my feet were hanging off the bed, would have been better if they at least put it against the wall but we didn't want to rearrange the furniture. the bathroom was nice though, as were the linens and amenities
