I had a pretty big delay with my flight getting from Atlanta to Guatemala City, which meant I had to wait to get a flight into Flores until the next morning. Chris was so helpful in adjusting things for me, and we were able to fit in all of the outings originally planned by making some adjustments. Thank you very much for making this a very special trip for us! I was also delighted to add a lot of new birds to my bird list!

Hi Craig

The planning framework was thoughtful, and the execution reflected real effort behind the scenes. Coordinating a thre-week, multi-country journey with frequent hotel changes, drivers, flights, and activity transitions is complex, yet it was handled efficiently and with clear structure. There were many moving parts, and for the most part, they connected smoothly.
Overall, the guides arranged through KimKim were mostly excellent. They were knowledgeable, personable, and spoke very good English. Easy to spend a full day with, which matters more than people realize. Of course, not every guide operated at the same level — some were truly outstanding, others solid but less engaging — but the overall standard was high.

Our interactions with Lucy were smooth and professional. She was responsive, organized, and clearly making an effort to coordinate across multiple locations and moving parts. That’s not simple, especially when we were changing cities every few days. When small issues came up, she addressed them quickly and without defensiveness, which I appreciated.

One suggestion: receiving the guide’s name and contact details at least 24 hours in advance would be very helpful. Knowing who will meet you, and how to reach them on WhatsApp will create a bit more confidence — especially when logistics are tight or reception / Wi-Fi is unreliable. It’s a small operational improvement, but it would elevate the experience.

The drivers, on the other hand, were consistently top-notch. Punctual, professional, calm on sometimes chaotic roads, and vehicles were clean and comfortable. In Southeast Asia traffic, that alone deserves recognition.

Little Hoi An Boutique Hotel & Spa

Our stay at Little Hoi An Boutique Hotel was genuinely enjoyable and easy. The location is a real advantage. The hotel is within walking distance of the Old Town and many key attractions, which made getting around simple and relaxed. The free bicycles were a big plus for us—we used them and especially enjoyed a morning ride out to the rice fields just outside of town. Quiet roads, flat terrain, and a peaceful start to the day. The room was clean, well maintained, and practical, with enough space for two people and their luggage. The hotel has a calm, classic feel that suits Hoi An well. Staff were welcoming and attentive, and service felt genuine rather than rehearsed. Breakfast was solid, with good options to start the day. Overall, a comfortable, well-located boutique hotel with thoughtful extras that actually get used. A great base for exploring Hoi An, both on foot and by bike.

Our stay at Lynnaya Urban River Resort was excellent from start to finish. We wished we coukd stay longer. The room was very comfortable and thoughtfully designed, with ample space for two people and their luggage—no feeling of being cramped or having to rearrange bags constantly. The room layout really works. The outdoor shower was a standout feature: well executed, private, and honestly a pleasure to use. It added character without sacrificing comfort. Service was top notch throughout the stay. Staff were attentive, warm, and genuinely focused on making things easy and pleasant, without ever feeling scripted or overbearing. Breakfast was another strong point, with good options and solid quality, making mornings relaxed and unrushed. Overall, this is a fantastic hotel—comfortable, well designed, and very well run. The room at White Lotus Hue Hotel was comfortable for two people traveling with luggage, which immediately made the stay easier. There was enough space to move around without constantly negotiating bags, and the room felt practical and wibell set up. Service was very good throughout—staff were attentive, friendly, and handled things efficiently. The central location is another strong point, making it easy to walk to key sights or get around Huế without much planning. Breakfast was the only minor downside. Although there was plenty of excellent food and seating, the buffet area felt chaotic, with a lot of pushing and shoving (by the hotel guests) that took away from what should have been a relaxed start to the day. Overall, a solid and convenient hotel with good service and comfort, slightly let down by breakfast organization.

Dora Cruise
Ha Long city

The boat itself, Dora and all the other boats, stayed anchored most of the time, or moved very little. Practically everything—boarding at the port, excursions, and disembarkation—was done via small, simple shuttle boats. They were functional, not luxurious, and clearly built for logistics rather than comfort. In that sense, Dora operates more as a floating hotel than a true cruise ship. You eat on board, sleep on board, relax on deck, and enjoy the scenery from a fixed position in the bay. Explorations are done on a transporter boat. worth noting is that the sense of peace and quiet is not available . The Dora & Nearby boats run their engines frequently—even when anchored—and the smell of diesel and engine noise is quite unpleasant, which detracts from the otherwise serene setting. The staff deserves real credit. They were consistently friendly, attentive, and accommodating. Service felt warm and genuine. The food was good, well prepared and reliable, but not especially memorable or adventurous. The activities, while well organized, felt manufactured. They follow a polished script designed to move many guests efficiently through a curated version of the experience. it lacks authenticity, spontaneity or a sense of discovery. Stepping back, Ha Long Bay is undeniably beautiful. Still, after going through the full program, I’m left thinking that a well-planned day trip from Hanoi is probably sufficient to experience the bay’s essence. An overnight cruise adds comfort and atmosphere, but not necessarily deeper access or insight. In short: comfortable, pleasant, professionally run. but our goal is simply to understand and appreciate the bay, and we don’t need more than a day trip. But look for service the offers kayaking as it was the highlight of our trip on Hà Lin Bay

We really enjoyed our stay at Le Close du Fil Hotel. The rooms were spacious, clean, and genuinely comfortable, with plenty of room to settle in and relax. Gateway Inn Pu Luong

The Gateway Inn Pu Luong's staff provided excellent service throughout our stay and were consistently attentive and welcoming. The food options were good, well prepared, and thoughtfully presented. The rooms themselves were clean to a certain extend. However, upon check-in, some of the cups in the room and the bathroom did not appear to be clean, which was a minor but noticeable issue. Some doors did not close properly which allow flys to get in. In addition, the rooms are very rustic, which may appeal to some travelers but felt overly basic for our expectations. The room was very small without any storage space. The wet bathroom had only a sink with no counter space and storage. Furthermore, there was a hole in the wall (30x30 cm) that allowed curious guests to look into our bathroom,. We also experienced that the hot water running out mid shower each time.

Here is a more polished and balanced version: The room quality did not meet our expectations. Upon check-in, it was not properly cleaned, which was disappointing. The overall condition suggested that the space could benefit from some attention and upkeep. While we understand and appreciate a rustic concept, this felt more worn than charming and was simply more basic than our preference.
MK Premier Boutique hotel
Hanoi

We had a front-facing room with a balcony, which unfortunately reduced the usable room size quite a bit. For two people traveling with luggage, the space already felt tight, and the balcony layout made it more so. Because of street noise, we didn’t end up using the balcony at all, so it felt like wasted space. Welcoming and friendly service and an excellent breakfast, but as space matters, a quieter, non-balcony room might be the better choice.

Exploring The Natural Beauty of Ninh Binh (Tam Coc - Hang Mua - Bich Dong)
Thailand

We spent the day Exploring the Natural Beauty of Ninh Binh (Tam Coc – Hang Mua – Bich Dong) with Trung as our guide, and overall it was a very rewarding experience. Trung did an excellent job leading the day. He was organized, clear, and informative without overwhelming us. Climbing the 500 steps up Ngoa Long Mountain at Hang Mua was a highlight. It’s a proper climb — you feel it in your legs — but the view at the top absolutely justifies the effort. Dramatic limestone peaks, river winding below, rice fields stretching out. It’s the kind of panorama that makes you pause for a moment. The bike ride was another enjoyable part of the day. Cycling through the countryside, passing small villages and open fields, gave us a more grounded feel for the area. It broke up the itinerary nicely and kept the day active. The boat ride in Tam Coc was pleasant, though more structured than I expected. We followed a fixed route, and while the scenery is beautiful, there’s limited opportunity to stop or explore the temples along the river. I would rate that portion around 3/5 — still worthwhile, just less flexible than I had hoped. Overall, Trung made the experience smooth and engaging. His steady guidance, local insight, and calm presence tied everything together. Ninh Binh is visually stunning, and having a knowledgeable guide like Trung makes it much more than just a photo stop.

Hanoi City Tour & Water Puppet Experience with Artist Phan Thanh Liem
Hanoi City Tour & Water Puppet Experience with Artist Phan Thanh Liem
Hanoi

This was truly one of the more unique cultural experiences we’ve had in Vietnam. The Hanoi city tour itself was very informative and engagin6g. It gave us useful historical and cultural context, not just the usual checklist of sites. We walked away understanding the layers of the city — imperial history, French influence, modern Vietnam — all woven together in a way that made sense. But the highlight was unquestionably the private water puppet experience with Artist Phan Thanh Liem. Meeting the artist himself — the puppeteer who actually creates the puppets — and his wife in their home studio added an entirely different dimension. This wasn’t a staged tourist production. It felt personal. Intimate. Authentic. Seeing how the puppets are carved, painted, and brought to life made the performance far more meaningful. The show itself was charming and skillful, but what stayed with us was the conversation afterward. Hearing about his family’s history in this traditional art form, and the effort to preserve it, gave real depth to what we were watching

Visit Kulen Elephant forest, Banteay Srei Temple
Siem Reap

What struck me first was the absence of performance. No riding. No tricks. No staged theatrics. The elephants simply walked — slowly, deliberately — through the forest. We followed at their pace, not the other way around. That small inversion changes everything. The guides explained the background of each elephant, most rescued from logging or tourism work. You could see the shift in their behavior — calmer, less reactive. It did not feel like a zoo. It felt like a retirement community in the jungle Banteay Srei highlights craftsmanship. The pink sandstone allows for remarkably fine detail. The carvings — mythological scenes and delicate floral patterns — are precise, almost lace-like. It is compact, elegant, and focused. If you want to understand the artistic language of the Khmer temples without being overwhelmed by scale, this is the place to start.

Quality of Experience

Full Day Explore Angkor Complex (Classic Adventure Cambodia-S)
Siem Reap

Angkor at sunrise is worth every minute of lost sleep. Standing before Angkor Wat as the first light touches the towers is something you don’t quite forget. The silhouettes slowly sharpen, the sky shifts from indigo to gold, and for a few quiet minutes the entire complex feels suspended in time. Then the day unfolds — temple after temple, each with its own scale, texture, and story. It’s physically long, but intellectually and emotionally absorbing. Inside one of the active temples, we were invited to sit while a Buddhist monk offered a brief blessing. It was understated and sincere. A soft chant, a light sprinkle of water, a red thread tied around the wrist. No theatrics, no performance — just a simple ritual that reminded us these are not ruins. They are living spaces of faith. By evening, We came across a local family honoring their ancestors, through music and dancing. There was rhythm and laughter. It felt joyful rather than solemn. Not staged. Just life unfolding naturally beside thousand-year-old stone. That layering — sunrise over an ancient empire, quiet spiritual blessing, then living cultural celebration — is what made the day feel complete. Angkor is history, yes. But it is also very much alive.

Riding bikes with Ms. Thanh through Hue — and then into the smaller surrounding communities — gave us a much broader perspective of the city. It’s one thing to visit monuments, citydels , and historic sites. It’s another to cycle through neighborhoods, cross small bridges, pass schoolyards, markets, and homes, and see daily life unfolding naturally. The rhythm is different when you’re on a bike. Slower. Closer to the ground. More human. What made it especially meaningful was the interaction with local families. Through Ms. Thanh’s introductions, we were able to have real conversations — simple, genuine exchanges — and get a glimpse into how people actually live. Seeing their homes, understanding their routines, hearing about their work and family life added a layer you simply don’t get from sightseeing alone. It didn’t feel staged. It felt respectful and authentic. For us, this was a fantastic experience — one that moved beyond tourism and into something more personal and memorable.

Trung, our guide, made the experience. He wasn’t just reciting facts — he explained context. History, local customs, farming practices, village dynamics — all delivered in a clear, thoughtful way that made everything feel connected rather than staged. You could tell he genuinely understands the region and cares about sharing it properly. The village visits felt authentic, not performative. We walked through working indigenous communities, saw how families live, how crops are grown, how small local economies function. It was real life, not a curated “tourist version.” The bamboo rafting was simple and peaceful. No engines, no rush — just drifting with the landscape around us. A nice counterbalance to the walking portions of the day. The cultural walk itself was well paced. Enough activity to feel engaged, but not exhausting. Traditional Apsara show with dinner
Traditional Apsara show with dinner

The costumes were detailed and elegant, the hand gestures precise, and the choreography disciplined. There is no question that Cambodian classical dance is technically beautiful. That said, we found myself missing context. We had little understanding of the storyline, the mythological background, or what each dance represented. Without explanation, it becomes visually impressive but emotionally distant. A short introduction before each segment would have made a significant difference. I also have to admit it felt somewhat staged for tourists. The dinner format, the flow of groups in and out, the predictable structure — it lacked a sense of intimacy or spontaneity. It felt curated rather than lived. Interestingly, the next day we came across a local village “celebration of life” ceremony. No stage lighting. No polished choreography. Just music, movement, community, and authenticity. That experience was captivating in a completely different way — real, unfiltered, grounded in daily life.

Seeing Hue at night from a cyclo gives you a completely different perspective. The pace is slow, but traffic was not. 😁 You glide streets, past the river, through small alleys you would never think to enter on your own. It’s relaxed and immersive at the same time. The food was the real highlight. Hue cuisine is distinct — more refined, more layered, slightly imperial in character. This tour allowed us to sample a wide variety of local dishes in places we would not have found independently. Small family-run spots, street vendors, modest restaurants. Nothing fancy, but authentic and well chosen. What I appreciated most was the structure. It wasn’t just eating for the sake of eating. The tour guide Ms. Thanh. Provided explanation. Why certain dishes are specific to Hue. How royal cuisine influenced portion size and presentation. How flavors here differ from Hanoi or Saigon. By the end of the evening, we weren’t just full — we understood Hue better.

Hue

We did a city tour of Hue, and it’s genuinely a very interesting and beautiful place. There’s real historical depth here — imperial legacy, layered architecture, and a sense of Vietnam’s past that still feels present. The Citadel alone carries enough stories to fill a full day. Hue has an exciting past. Dynasties, wars, reconstruction — you can feel that this city has seen a lot. It’s not just another stop on the map. That said, I couldn’t help but feel that with a stronger guide, the experience could have been truly amazing. The sites themselves are powerful, but they need context, narrative, and storytelling to bring them fully to life. We received information, but not quite the depth or energy that would have transformed the visit from interesting to unforgettable. Hue deserves a guide who can connect the dots, explain the political and cultural shifts, and make the emperors, battles, and architecture feel alive again. Still, as a destination, Hue is absolutely worth visiting. Just make sure you have a guide who can elevate it to the level it deserves.

Hoàng was a solid guide overall, with some clear strengths and a few gaps. On the positive side, he did a good job reordering the itinerary to help us avoid the large tour buses and peak crowds. That made a real difference to the flow of the day and showed good situational awareness. That said, communication was sometimes a challenge. His English was hard to understand at points, which made it difficult to fully follow explanations. Compared with other guides we encountered at the same sites, the level of historical and cultural detail felt lighter—most noticeably at the Citadel, where we expected more depth and context. In short, Hoàng is capable and thoughtful when it comes to logistics and crowd management, but the visitor experience would benefit from clearer communication and richer storytelling. A decent experience overall, just not as engaging or informative as it could have been.

The Hoi An Teh Dar Show was visually impressive and highly athletic. The scale of the production is striking — stage, elaborate costumes, coordinated choreography. The performers are remarkably skilled, and the mix of music and dance keeps the energy high throughout. It’s clearly a major production, and while it leans theatrical rather than intimate, it delivers strong visual impact. We enjoyed it. The RÊU dinner that followed was, in many ways, the highlight of the evening. The food are the RÊU was superb — fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and rooted in a genuine farm-to-table philosophy. Knowing the ingredients come from their own organic farm adds credibility, but more importantly, you can taste the difference. The bike rides through the rice paddies outside Hoi An were easily the best part of our time there. Within minutes of leaving the busy old town, everything changes. The noise fades. The air feels different. Wide stretches of green rice fields open up on both sides, broken only by small farm paths, water buffalo, and the occasional farmer tending crops. It’s peaceful in a way the town itself simply isn’t. The terrain is mostly flat and manageable, making it accessible even if you’re not a serious cyclist. You can ride at your own pace, stop for photos, or just take in the landscape. There’s something grounding about being in working farmland rather than a curated tourist space. What we appreciated most was the contrast. After navigating crowded streets, the paddies felt authentic and unforced. Just daily life unfolding around you. If you do go to Hoi An, don’t miss this. And if possible, go early in the morning when the light is soft and the paths are quiet. That’s when it feels most real.

Boarding the Dora was smooth and handled efficiently. Everything worked like a well-oiled machine — organized, structured, and clearly something the crew does day in and day out. That said, it also felt mechanical. The process was efficient, but somewhat impersonal. There wasn’t much of a personal touch or sense of welcome that made us feel like guests rather than passengers being processed. It wasn’t problematic — just transactional.

Hoi An City Tour – Boat Ride – Release Flower Lantern
Hoi An City Tour – Boat Ride – Release Flower Lantern
Hoi An

Hoi An was beautiful, but also extremely crowded during our visit. The volume of tourists negatively impacted the experience. The city tour ended up being cut short because the streets were simply too congested to move comfortably or pause for meaningful explanations. It became more about navigating through the crowds than actually absorbing the history and atmosphere of the old town. The evening boat ride and lantern experience, which we had hoped would feel magical, came across as rushed and highly commercialized. With so many boats operating at once and constant activity around us, there was no sense of ospirituality. Instead of feeling reflective or intimate, it felt more like a coordinated production line. There is still charm in Hoi An, but timing and expectations matter. In peak hours, the experience can feel more touristic than transcendent.

Quality of Experience
We loved the 2 bike rides, the show and the dinner after the show at the RÊU. But as a city it is not my cup of tea

Lan Ha Bay - Dark & Light Cave - Disembarking (Dora Cruise)
Ha Long Bay

The final day of the cruise felt somewhat staged more than we had hoped. The activities seemed designed more to fit a standard program as the Dora switched the 2 groups than to offer a genuine sense of an experience . It gave the impression of a scripted experience rather than something organic and Intersting Disembarkation, much like boarding, was efficient and well organized. Everything moved smoothly and on schedule, which we appreciated. Overall, the logistics were handled professionally — we just would have preferred a more natural and immersive interaction to the journey.

Quality of Experience
skip the two-night, three-day cruise.opt for a well-designed full-day cruise If you are headed to Krabi or Khoa Sok, skip it all together (you will gain 3 days to spend elsewhere)

Quality food but nothing memorable

Lan Ha Bay - Cycling At Viet Hai Village - Sunset Party ( Dora Cruise - Day 2)
Ha Long Bay

This particular activity felt manufactured activity that was lacking any meaningful context. We were hoping for a deeper introduction to the local indigenous community — their history, traditions, and way of life — but that connection was largely missing. The bike ride itself was pleasant enough, but it felt more like a staged tourist add-on than an authentic cultural experience. Without proper background or real interaction, it came across as something designed primarily for visitors rather than something rooted in genuine local engagement. It wasn’t unpleasant — just a bit superficial. With more context, storytelling, or direct community involvement, it could have been far more impactful.

Quality of Experience
This activity was not authentic and felt as a tourist trap
Food
It was OK food. But did not match the 4 star quality that was expected

The Dora's staff manged the tour effectively

Dear Limor,

Firstly, I’m so grateful for your feedback, and I know you had a great time with us in Thailand and with all the excursions we prepared for you. It seems that the issues you experienced were related to logistics rather than the excursions themselves. However, I would like to clarify some points below, and I hope you will look back at your vacation and our communication.

I am a travel consultant from PrestiGo Asia – a local tour operator on Kimkim. This means that all activities and pick-ups were operated directly by our local team at PrestiGo Asia.

Looking back at your trip, which started on January 19th, we sent you all documents on January 6th, including the itinerary vouchers for each day, domestic flight details, advice about meeting points, instructions on how to meet our staff at the airport, and three WhatsApp contact numbers (hotline, operator, etc.). However, it seems you did not read or refer to these documents during the tour, even though they were sent to you in advance.

I would like to clarify this further so you and other travelers can understand. In Thailand, at all major airports, welcome boards must be held at a designated meeting point behind the barrier. Travelers need to go to that specific meeting point and look for the sign with their name. Our staff are there to assist you. This is the standard procedure at large airports in Thailand and is not difficult to find.

Regarding communication, the main issue was that you did not read our messages with the contact numbers during the tour. Our team was always available on WhatsApp to assist you, as sometimes emails on the Kimkim platform can be missed, especially on weekends. Please note that we sent you three contact numbers, but you did not reach out to any of them.

Afterward, I realized that you did not open our confirmation voucher, which included the pickup times and the daily itinerary. You were confused about the itinerary in Khao Sok because when you changed the accommodation, the trekking activity was replaced. However, once we received your message and understood that you were unaware of the change, we immediately offered to arrange the trekking tour for you without any problem. But you mentioned that you were too tired and did not want to do the trekking. I was quite sad to receive that response.

Regarding the Krabi activities, if you felt that some activities were a waste of time, for example Emerald Pool, we understand. We have been there ourselves and also feel disappointed because it is simply a natural pool that can be very crowded.

Overall, we were a bit disappointed to receive a 3-star rating, as we truly put a lot of effort into preparing your trip and provided all information 15 days in advance. However, we respect your opinion and understand that your experience may have felt different from our expectations, especially regarding communication. I have already informed my team about this situation and we have carefully noted all the details so we can improve our process and serve our future guests even better.

Your feedback is very important to us, and we would be happy to welcome you back to Thailand in the future.

We greatly appreciated her partnership on telling us when we were trying to fit in too much during planning, leaving us with an itinerary that was the perfect balance of action-packed activities and free time to explore or relax at our leisure for every location. Before departure, she provided a thorough day-by-day itinerary and many resources to prepare us for New Zealand. On the trip itself, she was crucial to our trip remaining on track as we were there at a very rainy time. She took point on rearranging our itinerary when some of our events were cancelled for inclement weather. The restaurant recommendation list was also phenomenal - some of our best meals were at the restaurants they recommended.

We got to see so many filming locations as part of this tour. The guides made sure to calibrate their tour based on who was in attendance, so the super LOTR fan and the casual enjoyer (i.e., my husband and myself) could both appreciate and enjoy their time. They brought a flip book to show the scenes and how they were staged for the film, and Pure Glenorchy was also able to get us onto a privately owned location for the Hobbit and to get a better view of Isengaard. And of course the photo opportunity at the end was an awesome touch. It even included a break for afternoon tea in the park in Glenorchy!

Ash was an amazing tour guide for the Kai Bites tour. She took us around to her favorite spots, taking care to point out important history, art, and buildings around Christchurch, including spots that we would not have thought to check out or would have noticed on our own. Ash made sure to point out shops that features local artisans so we could bookmark them for our own time, and when we mentioned our dinner reservation plans, she helped pick out a menu of must haves (which were, to no surprise, amazing recommendations). She clearly has a love for her work and sharing great food with others, and it was such a delight to spend the time with her, which made this a top excursion on our trip.

When I asked about making changes to the itinerary, Marc took the time to explain why it was originally planned the way it was, and I’m so glad we trusted his expertise and left everything as he designed it. The trip flowed perfectly, the accommodations were amazing, and we never had to worry about a single detail. We also got pretty lucky with the weather since it was rainy season in Indonesia, but much less crowds and I couldn’t imagine going when it’s crowded everywhere and humid!

We’re so grateful to Marc and Kimkim for creating a honeymoon we’ll never forget. We would absolutely use them again and highly recommend them to anyone planning a special trip.

Using a travel agency/booking guides to plan, organize and adjust our itinerary and logistics for our trip to Costa Rica was a huge departure from our usual do it yourself travel. It was a first for us actually. So we obviously had some fears and trepidations in how it would all work out. We needn't have worried. Everyone we dealt with was professional and quick to adjust our plans as needed. From early on there were changes that had to be made. Perhaps most notable though were the cancellation of two of our planned and paid for activities due to weather conditions. I am very pleased those were refunded in full. The rental car seemed a little sketchy as we neared our departure day as I was unable to find much information or reviews on them but Sun Valley Rentals turned out to be a pleasure to deal with and we especially liked the pick up and drop off right at the airport. No un-nerving shuttle to deal with. The only glitz was the rep was not waiting for us when we arrived and I ended up paying a local who could see I was searching for awhile for them to call Sun Valley for me. I take the blame here though as apparently he sent us a message via Watts App which we missed. Still, he wasn't there with a sign as planned.
You really listened to what we wanted in Costa Rica and picked two perfect lodgings for us based on those wishes. We really feel we had two vacations in Costa Rica thanks to the dramatic differences between our lodges in Monteverde and Guanacaste. We experienced all the experiences we asked for, when the weather cooperated. We experienced a tropical storm and winds, rain and heavy rain our first three days there. Thanks in part to your help, we were able to salvage much of what could have been a disaster. I suppose you could suggest that folks vacationing in the cloud forest may experience significantly harsher weather conditions than expected. We had temperatures in the upper 40's (F) and winds in excess of 70mph! We took it in stride and even had some good laughs with other good natured tourists as we all admitted we had been wearing all the clothes we brought with us for three days in a row now :)
Our favorite highlights of our trip were the el tigre waterfall, tree top dining and everything about Rio Perdido, especially the thermal river and the overall complete lack of crowding (we hiked to miles without seeing anyone) and incredible privacy of our lodging.
Our planner was Gustavo and Kate assisted us while in Costa Rica.

exceeded our expectations in every way. Perhaps the nicest lodge we've stayed at overall. The bungalows are extremely private and designed so well I found myself photographing many features of them to perhaps implement some of those ideas in my own house someday. The outdoor shower, the lava exfoliating tiles on the floor, the copper trough bathroom sink. Just wonderful. Couldn't believe the privacy we had in everything we did. Had the thermal river to ourselves, the hiking paths to ourselves and even the restaurant almost to ourselves. So much so that I questioned if they were perhaps not very booked and was stunned to hear they were at 100%.

If you are spending hours with somebody in a car you better feel comfortable with that person. Yussef was a great driver (I tend to get car sick and even in the mountains I was fine!). He was super punctual, reliable, entertaining, and genuinely friendly. He waited for us while we had dinner to drive us to the hotel, brought us to places that weren't even mentioned in the itinerary and always kept his good humor even when the weather and traffic were awful. I highly recommend him to anybody planning a trip to Morocco.
We saw a lot on this trip - Casablanca, Rabat, Chefchaouen, Volublis, Meknes, Fes, Merzouga, Dades Gorge, Boumaine Dades, Ait Benhaddou, Marrakesh, Essaouira and every place was a wonderful experience and I am glad we didn't skip any place because of the sometimes long drives. Besides the cities it was the cultural experiences and guides that made this trip extra special.

The dinner was very good - you have to order an hour before you would like to eat which is the case in many riads. We had a drink by the fireplace before dinner and the young man serving us was rearranging the furniture to make us more comfortable.

Glamping in the desert? This is the place to go. The tents are like hotel rooms with comfy bed, small sitting area, and bathroom. They even provide short djellaba which was appreciated in the cool evening. They provide dinner and breakfast in a beautiful dining room with fire place. Staff makes music around the fire pit in the evening. Only thing to improve could be the quality of the meat in the main course.

This was a really nice tour overall. A little off the beaten path, so the beaches seemed very private and secluded. Unfortunately, we were not able to hit all of the destinations, because of high winds. Also, our guide was apparently new to guiding, and we had a few strange interactions. We also ended up having to pay for coconut water, which we were not told about prior to - the guide brought it to us, and then asked for the cash later. Luckily, I did bring cash. However, most of the crew was very pleasant, and the food we were given was phenomenal. It was overall a lovely day, just doesn't get 5 starts from me given a few strange moments.

Very comfortable on the way there, but on the way back, the guide made my partner sit on a cardboard box because his shorts were damp. We didn't disembark on the dock, given the winds, so our clothes got wet once more since we landed on a beach. I think the expectations should have been discussed earlier, not when we got into the car.

We had about 9 different guides, and every single one was excellent, sharing lots of info, but always in an interesting way. Carlo, our driver for 3 days, proud Mayan speaking perfect English, was simply amazing, as a driver, assistant, and very knowledgeable ambassador for Mayan culture and people.
Valladolid and the archaeological wonders of Chichen Itsa, Yaxunah, Ek Balam and Tulum were all fascinating, and the tours of them quite educational. This 77-year-old successfully climbed the 106 steep, narrow steps of Ek Balam's Acropolis, a former royal palace & temple, and the panoramic views of the surrounding jungle from the top were amazing!
Other highlights:
Imagine me comfortably, peacefully floating in the middle of the beautiful Lol-Ha Cenote.
A private boat ride in Rio Lagartos - Las Colorades was a wonderful adventure in nature - flamingos, mangroves, a great variety of birds perched along the shore, and getting up close to a few crocodiles.
Our private "cooking class" in Nuevo Durango was a rich traditional Mayan cultural & gastronomical experience.
Snorkeling at the Caribbean coral reef – enjoying seeing a big ray, several turtles (some getting very close), & lots of beautiful fish.
Being in an underground river surrounded by thousand-year-old stalactites and stalagmites - a fascinating experience.
Enjoying a wondrous variety of tacos and other foods during our food tour in Tulum.
In conclusion, we want to give all the people at kimkim and Rutopia who were involved in our journey High Accolades for a fabulous vacation. Ana Sofia patiently crafted a trip that was rich and full of marvelous activities, in a balanced itinerary that was structured perfectly to be full, but not tire us out in any way. It was full of Mayan culture, history, architectural wonders, natural beauty, fascinating wildlife, vivid colors, delicious food, basically non-stop enjoyment, and fun! The Real Hispano hotel is beaufiful, authentic, and conveniently located in colorful Valladolid. The Piedra Escondida in Tulum is a tropical secluded beach Paradise!
Ana Sofia patiently worked with us, really listened and understood our desires, concerns, and limitations. In a word, she cared about us and about creating an amazing trip for us. When a proposed activity or location wasn’t right, she cheerfully did more research and replaced it, leading to a truly personalized, nearly perfect, amazing trip of a lifetime!
And then there was Luz Maria from Rutopia, our loyal WhatsApp buddy, cheerfully and competently accompanying, supporting, and caring about us every day of the trip. What a gift! – giving us daily information, helping us in so many ways, answering our questions, really hearing our concerns, and fixing “problems” whenever possible. Just being there for us every day. Making sure that Ana Sofia’s beautiful plan was well implemented. Wow.

We had a fantastic trip to Peru. We started our adventure in Cusco where we were picked up and delivered to the airport for a flight to Puerto Maldenado. The staff literally walked us into the airport and assisted us getting our boarding passes and bags checked. In Puerto Maldenado, we were met by Carlos who helped us get our bags and into a waiting van which took us to the Peruvian Soul office. At the office we separated out the clothes we needed for the Tambopata River trip and our stay at Finca Sachabacayoc lodge. After separating our clothing, Carlos delivered us to a dock where we were met by Freddy who told us he would be our activity guide while we were at Finca. We boarded a motor boat for a two and half hour ride up the Tambopata River to the the Finca Lodge. Along the way Freddy pointed out Macaws, Parrots and Eagles. The boat also literally took us right up next to a family of Capybaras.
The Finca Lodge was beautiful. Our cabin had two queen beds, a very modern bathroom and shower, and a screened in front porch with a hammock. The main lodge structure had a large restaurant and a lovely bar. We were assigned a table where we ate all our meals with our guide, Freddy.
The Peruvian food served us throughout our three night, 4 day stay, was terrific. I do not know the chef's name but he was awesome! Every meal the he would stop at our table to make sure we were happy with the food and drink; which we were. The bar was also terrific. We made friends during our stay with a couple from Portland Oregon and another couple from the Netherlands. Every evening the six of us had a beer or a Pisco Sour in the bar and chatted about our adventures that day.
Speaking of daily adventures, on the day we arrived, Freddy took us on a night hike where he showed us creatures of the night, including monkeys, scorpions, and tarantulas. The night sounds of the jungle during the night hike were amazing. That night after dinner, we went to our cabin for bed. The cries and sounds of the birds, monkeys and insects were mesmerizing. But just before we went to sleep a thunderstorm rolled in, the temperature dropped 20 degrees, and we slept like babies!
In the days that followed Freddy took us on a jungle hike to a lake where we paddled a canoe looking for Anacondas and Caymens and wild birds like Macaws. We had a marvelous time. Later that day we hiked to a 50 meter tower located in the middle of the jungle. After climbing to the top, we could see the jungle below. Freddy set up a spotting scope and he showed us many different kinds of birds and monkeys. We stayed on the tower until after sunset. Again the sounds of the jungle at night were mesmerizing!
The following day we got up at 2:30AM and took a boat to the Chuncho Clay Lick- a place where every morning at dawn, thousands of birds from the jungle come to eat the salt they need for their diets. We arrived just before dawn and set up our chairs and spotting scopes . As the sun rose, thousands of birds arrived; red and blue macaws, blue and yellow macaws, white and black toucans, green and yellow parrots and a sinister looking hawk that the other birds clearly did not like. The birds were beautiful. Freddy attached our phone cameras to his spotting scope and recorded slow motion videos of the birds flying in and around the salt lick. The video's are wonderful!
After about 2 hours (7:30AM), the birds began to leave the salt lick. We loaded up our stuff and headed back to the boat. But, much to our surprise, Freddy an other staff from the Finca Lodge had set up a breakfast table with eggs, fruit, pancakes, juice and coffee. In the middle of the jungle and on an island in the middle of the Tambopata River we had big and delicious breakfast!
Later that day Freddy took us on another boat ride to the Condenado Lake, where we took a raft built on pontoons that Freddy maneuvered using an unusual rudder device that allowed the raft to move. While traversing the lake Freddy spotted a family of giant River Otters. We followed them and got many great photos of the giant creatures. On this trip we also saw caymans, capybaras, monkeys, beautiful Macaws and an illegal gold mine set up in the middle of the river!
The next day we had to return to Puerto Maldenado. We said good bye to the friends and, with Freddy's help, took the boat back to Puerto Maldenado. It rained the entire trip back, but the boat had a roof with side plastic windows that kept us dry. The boat trip in the rain was actually quite fun.
In Puerto Maldenado, we retrieved the rest of our clothes and went to the airport, where Carlos helped us get our bags checked in and collect our boarding passes for our flight to Lima. Carlos literally walked with us all the way to security.
When we arrived in Lima, a man named Bosco and a van picked us up at the Lima airport and transported us to the Hotel Limade in the Mira Flores district. During the ride, Bosco regaled us with a very entertaining history lesson about Lima.
The Hotel Limade was brand new. I was told it had opened only 4 months earlier. The hotel was like a very fine hotel in a major city in the US. It was bvery nice with a great rooftop bar and a wonderful restaurant for the complimentary breakfast. The hotel was about 6 blocks from the Pacific Ocean and the beaches of Lima. After checking in, Wendy and I walked to the beaches and took many photos of the beautiful beaches, shops and parks. Th beaches reminded me of Miami.
The following day we were met by Nancy, our guide for the day. In a nutshell, she was awesome! Her English was perfect and her knowledge of Mira Flores and especially the Barranco district was superb. Nancy took us to the Barranco District which is famous for it's art, art galleries, restaurants, shops and beautiful boutique hotels. Nancy's tour was to last only 4 hours, but she stayed with us for nearly 6 hours! We ate at three separate restaurants sampling the unique food and drink of Lima. We also stopped at a chocolate factory where we sampled chocolates and watched how chocolate candy was made. We toured some of the beautiful boutique hotels of Barranco that were built in the early 1900's as private mansions for wealthy people from Europe and elsewhere. When Peru's economy struggled the homes were abandoned. Beginning in the late 1990's, these old mansions were bought by local Peruvians and who turned them into boutique hotels. We stopped at the Hotel B where Robert DeNiro stayed a year or so ago. It was magnificent!
Nancy also took us to several art galleries and to many street art paintings. We loved the art so much we bought a print from a famous Peruvian artist by the name of Jade Rivera.
Nancy was a spectacular guide. If you are in Lima make sure you ask for Nancy!
The next morning we had to return to the US. Bosco picked us up at the Hotel Limade and delivered us to the airport, including getting our boarding passes and our luggage checked. During the ride to the airport, Bosco told us more stories about Lima and Peru. Like Nancy, he too is a very good.
We loved Peru and and our trip to the Amazon and Lima. Thank you KimKim for taking such great care of us. Hasta la proxima vez! Tom and Wendy.

Lima

Great hotel. It is new in 2025. They have a great roof top bar and a nice restaurant for a very extensive complimentary breakfast.

Authenticity & Character
It is in the middle of the Mira Flores District, a beautiful suburb of Lima
Location
It is about 6 blocks from the beaches. There are restaurants, shopping and art all within walking distance
Staff
Everyone was super nice and they all spoke English
Cleanliness & Comfort
No, everything was terrific.
Finca Sachabacayoc

See my review of the trip. But this is a very fun place to stay with great food in the middle of the jungle

Authenticity & Character
It's adjacent to a huge river and in the jungle. The sounds during the day are great but at night they are spectacular
Location
Staff
The chef was terrific. He was always smiling and makig sure we were enjoying the food. Emerson is the manager. He was always around. If you had any questions or needed anything, Emerson would take care of it.

Nancy, our guide was perfect. She spoke excellent English and answered all of our questions. She took us to restaurants, art galleries, unique shops, and boutique hotels. Nancy was to be our guide for 4 hours, but she stayed with us for 6. She is incredibly good as a guide.

Quality of Experience
See above. At the end of our time with Nancy, we were friends.
Food
Nancy took us to three restaurants and a chocolate manufacturing business. The food and chocolate were wonderful. We especially enjoyed the restaurant Horneando Ando.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Although we didn't need a van, when we had to walk a few blocks, Nancy texted the driver and amazingly he would show up a minute or two later to take us to our next stop!

See my earlier report. We loved the Finca lodge.

Quality of Experience
The Lodge is very well maintained. Staff is very attentive. The food is terrific and the bar a great place to hang out after a day in the jungle.
Food
We loved the food. there was plenty of it and it was always top notch. We drank Barley Juice a couple of times and I have tried to recreate it at home, but alas, the Barley Juice at Finca was much better!

Freddy is the best!
Transport
The boats were great and the drivers excellent.

Freddy took us on a 2+ mile hike through the jungle to the lake. On the way Freddy educated us on the trees that grow in the Amazon, the various plants used medicinally by the indigenous tribes , and about the Anacondas we might see at the Lake. The canoe trip on the lake was beautiful. We saw anaconda tracks but no anacondas, but the birds, butterflies and monkeys we saw made up for not seing anacondas.

Quality of Experience
Freddy. He is really good.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
Freddy knows the jungle!

The canoe was perfect for the lake.

Holden was very pleasant and responsive. The drivers we had were excellent and sometimes, they had to drive under very difficult conditions. Overall, however, Holden clearly did not understand what we were looking for in terms of activities. We wanted activity. The hanging bridge trip was fine but in between the bridges, it was a walk at a snail's pace, stopping every ten feet to look at a different spider. The float was fine but I had to argue back and forth to get it later than 7 am, when we would have to miss breakfast and when it was colder. The hike in Manuel Antonio was not a hike-it to was a boring crawl at a snail's pace to look mostly at frogs, spiders and orchids-I was told it was a private hike for the four of us-I explained to our guide that we did not want to stop every ten feet and wanted actually hike and he said that this was not an actual hike and no adjustments could be made. Truthfully, we were elbow to elbow with hundreds of people-how private was that! The sailing cruise was nice and the food was good but Holden did not make clear that it was with 40 or so other people-I thought it would be a much smaller, semi-private activity-but it was fine. The Royal Corin exceeded expectations-the staff could not have been lovelier-the rooms were spectacular-the spa was great and the food was above average. The Mariposa had a beautiful view. That said, the staff were indifferent and the room had the very bare minimum. Overall, except for the drivers, I'm sorry I didn't just use TripAdvisor
