We had a really fun 10-day holiday with friends in Iceland traveling the Ring Road, and overall, Iceland itself was amazing and easy to navigate. While the trip was enjoyable, the experience with KimKim felt inconsistent and lacking attention to detail. Some of the specific issues we ran into:
Inconsistent accommodations: Some hotels had breakfast included while others did not (we had assumed this would be standard). A few hotels were wonderful, with amenities and great locations, while others fell flat, especially our last hotel in Reykjavik which was a disappointing way to end the trip (the first hotel in Reykjavik was amazing and great way to kick things off). At one point, instead of a hotel we were booked into an apartment — it felt like this may have been a late booking workaround since other options in town were sold out, despite the fact we started planning months in advance. Again no breakfast and when you're on the road changing hotels almost every night that becomes more of a challenge and expense than it should.
Booking practices: We were surprised to find some of our hotel reservations had been made through Expedia, which led to confusion at check-in when staff had trouble locating them.
Car rental & connectivity: While it worked out fine, we were never told that the rental car came with Wi-Fi. That would have been a very helpful detail, especially since they strongly advised us to rent directly from the airport and then we had to try to get the company to refund us.
Activity planning: The suggested activities were often unrealistic in terms of timing and order, which made parts of the itinerary difficult or impossible to execute in the way they were presented.
Local expertise: The program didn’t feel curated by someone with boots on the ground. It felt more like it had been assembled with generic recommendations or even AI, without the logical flow or insider touches we had expected.
To be clear, we had a great trip because Iceland itself is extraordinary and I was with my best friends, but the planning support didn’t live up to what we’d hoped for. With more consistency, realistic sequencing, and local insight the trip could have been seamless.

Loved this hotel partly because it was nice, modern and we stayed 2 nights (vs. 1). Also we saw the Northern Lights - we had a great waitress who woke us to tell us they were out....vs. the hotel staff that seemed uninterested. Good location to do a lot of the local activities in the area.

Our waitress woke us to tell us about NL = there is a button on the phones asking guests to press it if they want to see NL - it goes to a recorded service and when we asked about it at the front desk they said "oh that doesn't work" so they shoudl fix that as it seemed cool but I guess was de-activated.

This is a local hotel which is always nice. Tho it did smell like cow poop even though we didn't see any cows. Met the owner and she said they renovated 2 years ago. Ask for a room overlooking the lake vs. the parking lot. Kim Kim didn't indicate that on our reservation so some on us had better views than others.

Very good modern hotel and excellent if you'll be doing glacier activities. Kim Kim didn't tell us that Breakfast wasn't included (this was toward the end of our trip so we were surprised...) and there aren't other local options so we got a bit hood-winked on this one by Kim Kim.

Really bizarre hotel - lots of "art" which is kind of cool because it's Icelandic but the hotel is so dated and seems like a relic but not in an interesting way. Kim Kim shoudl make sure to check out these hotels before assigning them out. It was a STARK difference to the hotel they put us in at the beginning of the trip. This wasn't the way we wanted to end the trip. My friend's room (a single) literally looked like a cell. The Breakfast was good.

We really liked this area - it has some simple wide paths but the lava is wildly formed and this is where you can see "the hidden people" a lot easier :). (you'll have to look that up). There are quite a few walking/hiking paths and you can go as far or not as you want. There is actually a path to a crater which we didn't do becuase it was about 2 hours round trip but others said it was a great hike.

The Salkantay Trekking organization was terrific. Our guide, Yuri and the team went above and beyond anything we expected. They were thrown a powerful curveball with a train strike in Aguas Calientes which upended their carefully planned logistics. They helped to navigate the evacuation all while ensuring that we were still able to get to and enjoy Machu Picchu. They did it with enthusiasm and endless patience. We loved this trip, the trekking outfit and guide

comments: the light switches seemed to have no system in most of the hotels. Even the hotel staff couldn't figure them out. The Évora Olive didn't put tissues in the room. Petty but needed. The wine tasting in Lisbon was enjoyable but unnecessary because we had two tasting on the following days in Porto. The fado entertainment was very enjoyable, but the meal was rather perfunctory. If I did this again I would need another week so there would be more time in Lisbon and Porto. To sum up this was a wonderful trip. I have recommended Portugal to everyone. And I will recommend Kimkim to anyone who asks. Thanks for everything.

The Évora Olive Hotel was a fantastic experience. Although it's officially a four-star hotel, it felt just as magnificent as the others and was beautiful and comfortable. The only minor issue was the lack of tissues in the room, but the front desk provided them when asked. The staff was wonderful, and overall, it was a delightful stay despite that very trivial concern.

The KimKim team once again put together an amazing trip to Italy for us. It all began with our airport pick up in Milan with Sergio. Each private tour we took was absolutely amazing with extremely knowledgeable guides. To mention a few who were outstanding, Marco (Evening Aperitivo Street Food Tour, Francesco (Best of Milan & Duomo walking tour), Federica (Bologna Foodie Experience at Sunset), and Ricardo (Food Valley Private Experience). From the moment these tours began, each guides professionalism, enthusiasm and incredible knowledge of the area made each experience unforgettable. One of the highlights of the trip was the private cooking class in the home of Silvia and Antonio. From the moment we walked through their door we felt like part of the family. This is a "must do" experience for anyone going to Milan. I also can't forget to mention our trip to Ravenna where we created our own "masterpieces" in a mosaic class with visual artist Luca Barberini. It was our lucky day that we actually had the class with the Master himself!
If there were any downsides to our trip it would only be a couple of issues. Our Private Day Excursion to Lake Como was a bit disappointing and unorganized. The guide Simone, was unable to get the tickets for the ferry to Bellagio and Varenna. He did not do a good job problem solving to resolve this issue therefore we had to go to 3 closer towns on smaller ferries after we became frustrated with just standing around Como. It was also unfortunate that we did not know prior to the tour beginning that we would have to pay for his ferry tickets and his lunch.
The only other minor issue was finding the driver once we arrived in Napoli for our transfer to Sorrento. We were originally told he would be waiting at Platform 24 holding a sign. But he was somewhere outside the station by his car and did not give good directions on where he was located and phone reception was poor.
We highly recommend this trip to anyone looking to experience the best of Italy's history, cuisine, and charm.

Attending a mosaic workshop with visual artist Luca Barberini in Ravenna was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, Luca welcomed us with warmth, and a genuine enthusiasm that immediately set a relaxed and inspiring tone for the day. His passion for the ancient art of mosaics is contagious, and he generously shared not just his technical knowledge, but also his personal artistic vision — one that beautifully blends tradition with a contemporary, playful edge. Luca took the time to introduce us to the materials and methods in a hands-on, approachable way, making even beginners feel confident. By the end, each of us had crafted our own small mosaic — a unique souvenir and a tangible memory of the experience. If you’re in Ravenna and want to do something immersive, creative, and take with you a piece of the city’s artistic heritage, I can’t recommend Luca’s workshop enough. It’s not just about making a mosaic — it’s about seeing the world through the eyes of an artist who truly loves what he does and wants to share that joy with others.

Our Food Valley experience with Ricardo was an unforgettable day filled with incredible flavors, fascinating stories, and a deep appreciation for Italy’s most iconic culinary treasures. From start to finish, Ricardo was a knowledgeable and engaging guide who brought each stop to life with his passion for the region’s food culture. We began our day in Castelfranco Emilia at Caseificio Bio Reggiani, a family-run dairy farm where we got an up-close look at the traditional process of making Parmigiano Reggiano. Watching the cheese masters at work was fascinating, and the tour gave us a true appreciation for the craftsmanship and time involved. The visit ended with a delicious tasting of Parmigiano aged at different stages, along with the creamiest fresh ricotta—a perfect start to the day. Next, we headed to Modena to visit Leonardi Aceto Balsamico di Modena, a family-owned balsamic vinegar producer with over 150 years of history. We toured the vineyard and aging rooms, learning about the long and meticulous process that goes into making true Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale. The tasting was a standout moment, sampling aged vinegars paired with local cheeses, cured meats, and a glass of wine really highlighted the complexity and depth of flavor in each bottle. Our final stop took us to Parma/Langhirano, where we visited the Conti Prosciutto Factory, another inspiring, family-run business led by a mother and her three daughters. The tour walked us through the detailed process of curing prosciutto di Parma. It ended, of course, with another generous tasting that confirmed why this region is so celebrated for its culinary excellence. If you love Italian food and want a behind-the-scenes look at how the very best is made, this tour is an absolute must. A perfect day for food lovers looking to connect more deeply with the traditions and people behind Italy’s most beloved ingredients.

Our sunset foodie walking experience in Bologna with Federica was absolutely fantastic—one of those tours that leaves you full, happy, and completely in love with the city. We explored the Quadrilatero district, surrounded by colorful markets brimming with fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and the unmistakable aroma of authentic Italian cuisine. Federica was a phenomenal guide, warm, passionate, and full of fascinating stories about each little shop and food tradition we encountered. Our journey began at a local bakery, where we picked up fresh bread, followed by a visit to a pasta and pastry shop, where we tasted a delicious slice of torta di riso (a sweet rice cake unique to the region). From there, we visited a classic Salumeria and picked up a spread of prosciutto, mortadella, and Parmigiano Reggiano. As we walked through vegetable markets and narrow alleyways, Federica shared the rich history behind each family-run business, making the experience feel personal and connected to the heart of Bologna. The highlight of the evening was arriving at the Osteria del Sole—a charming, no-frills wine bar where you bring your own food. We laid out our spread, added Federica’s special touches like fig and onion spreads and an aged balsamic vinegar, and enjoyed a true Bolognese feast paired with local wine. The atmosphere was lively and authentic exactly the kind of experience you hope for in Italy. And just when we thought we couldn’t eat another bite, we continued to O’ Fiore Mio Pizzeria, where we sampled four different square pan pizzas, each with unique and delicious toppings. Finally, we ended the evening on a sweet note at Maritozzi & Gelato, where we indulged in two flavors of gelato of our choice. By the end, we were absolutely stuffed but thrilled. This tour was the perfect combination of food, culture, and local charm. Federica made the experience truly special, and we’d recommend it to anyone wanting to taste the soul of Bologna in just one magical evening.

Our day trip to Lake Como with our guide Simone was a mix of beautiful sights and a few unexpected challenges. The original plan included visits to the well-known towns of Bellagio and Varenna, but unfortunately, all the ferry tickets to those destinations were sold out when we arrived. This was disappointing, and it felt like there wasn’t a clear backup plan in place. At first, there was a lot of waiting around in Como city, which led to some understandable frustration. It wasn’t until we expressed our concern that Simone pivoted and suggested visiting alternative towns on the lake. Thankfully, this turned out to be a positive turn in the day. We ended up exploring Maltrasio, Torno, and Cernobbio—all charming, less touristy towns with beautiful views, peaceful streets, and rich local history. Simone was very knowledgeable and shared interesting details about each place we visited, which helped us appreciate these hidden gems. However, we were a bit surprised to find out that we were expected to cover Simone’s ferry tickets and his lunch during the tour—this was not clearly communicated beforehand and felt a little unprofessional for a guided excursion. Overall, while the day didn’t go as planned, we did enjoy discovering some lesser-known parts of Lake Como. With better organization and clearer expectations, this tour could have been much smoother. The towns we visited were truly lovely, and Simone’s historical insights were appreciated once the day found its rhythm.

Our private cooking class at the home of Sylvia and Antonio in Milan was truly one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed like family, with genuine hospitality that made us feel instantly at home. We began the evening with a delightful aperitivo, complete with Prosecco and a delicious spread of focaccia, pizza, cheeses, and other savory bites—all homemade and beautifully presented. The cooking portion of the evening was hands-on, fun, and filled with laughter. Under Antonio’s expert (and very patient!) guidance, we prepared fresh tagliatelle, delicate ravioli, and a classic tiramisu from scratch. They both made the entire process feel approachable and enjoyable, whether we were rolling dough or perfecting our layers of dessert. By the end of the evening, we didn’t just learn how to cook; we felt like we had spent a beautiful evening with dear friends. Our Best of Milan and Duomo Walking Tour with Francesco was an incredible look into the rich history, art, and architecture of this magnificent city. Francesco was an outstanding guide—knowledgeable, engaging, and full of fascinating stories that brought each stop to life. We began by exploring some of Milan’s most iconic landmarks, including the Royal Palace and the statue of Vittorio Emmanuel II, the first king of Italy. Walking through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II was like stepping into a museum, with its elegant high-end boutiques and stunning mosaic floors. Francesco also took us to the famed Teatro alla Scala, sharing its history and importance in the world of opera. A special highlight was the Church of Santa Maria Presso San Satiro, where the illusion of a cross-shaped interior was created by the use of perspective was amazing. Of course, the crown jewel of the tour was the Duomo di Milano. Climbing the 250 steps to the rooftop terraces was absolutely worth it to be able to walk among the 3,400 statues and spires which gave us breathtaking views of the city and a close-up look at the cathedral’s remarkable detail. The interior of the Duomo was just as spectacular. This tour was the perfect way to experience the best of Milan in just a few hours. Our third trip to Iceland was like the other two, great. The experience working with Guomundur was part of this great experience. If there is a fourth trip--and this is likely--we would be happy to work with Gummie and KimKim again. Gummy was accessible, professional and helpful when untangling several issues as they arose. The rental car experience was much better than the past two times. The vehicle was the right one for the roads and the company was the best one we dealt with thus far . The only small issue was that the Toyota Land Cruiser was quiet banged up: several major dents, two many scratches to count, and a distinct pull to the left when the brakes were applied in all but the lightest applications.
Below there are several things to mention that are in the "how could this be better" category.

Think through how providing and delivering directions and highlights might be more streamlined and how you might push read later people like me to prepare before the trip in this regard.

I would stress reading carefully all driving directions, both before and during the trip. We had one overnight snag when we thought we were to take a ferry to our destination without knowing it was not operating. This in part was our mistake as we were using Apple Maps (which worked fine in all other cases) and it directed us to the ferry. My only suggestion would be that a clear statement not to take the ferry would be a worthwhile bit of advice in the directions. We found a place to stay ( a good one) and learned while trying to alert the hotel we were assigned that we could not make it, they had made a mistake in allowing a two-night booking although they claimed they tried to cancel the second night in May but did not connect with the person who booked the hotel. They had to assign us to a sister hotel-a less upscale one--but went out of their way, apologizing and providing both a welcome baskett and a free dinner with drinks. They mentioned a refund would be made (for the night we missed) but not sure if this happened as we were told it would be through the Expedia site.
Our hosts and facilities were solid with these exceptions: Both hotel stays in Reykjavik had assigned us to poor rooms. One was on a second floor with a crane and work crew operating right outside our window and a window on the afternoon sun. This meant we had to keep the drapes closed and not be able to vent a very hot room. This hotel was a Center Hotel near the performance center. The final night spent at the Alda hotel also assigned a room that was on the second floor directly on the main street. Again, if we kept the window open or air we could not escape the noise from the street. In both cases I asked for a room change and received one. I believe they assigned us a poor room to see if we would simply accept the assignment without complaint. Clearly, they had other rooms. If I plan a fourth trip I would make sure it did not include these hotels.

The lodging Djupavik was terrible. I can be fine with a small room and shared bathroom facilities at times, but the place was dangerous for guests (terrible entry and stairs to the second floor--I'm surprised they get away with this--and the hosts were the most unfriendly ones, by far, that we encountered on the trip. Silly but meaning full things like never saying welcome or how is your stay going. They avoided eye contact and with they exception for the Polish Woman who seemed to do all the work, the owners and manager were simply rude and unwelcoming. I would scratch this place from any itinerary. They drive through the fjord was dramatic and beautiful but somewhat ruined by this experience. I would suggest staying at another place, before the 30 mile or so drive and make this part a day trip.

The items above stand in contrast to the overall quality of the trip. As asked for we spent time in some very beautiful and special places, spent a good amount of time in the West Fjords, had plenty of thermal pools to enjoy (and quite a variety but Sky Lagoon remains our favorite). In spite a poor road, the trip to the Highland Station (in the center of Iceland) was spectacular! If there is a trip four, I would want to spend at least two nights.

I want to make sure you that we convey how much we enjoyed the trip. It was particularly special as it was focused on a new part of Iceland for us and the predictable helpful and friendliness of Icelanders. It is the people of the country as well as its sheer beauty that keeps us returning. I worry about the number of tourists that arrive each year--if that will continue to grow. I can't help but contrast this fact with the solo experience I had in 1999. My first trip was the one that sent me back a second, third, and fourth time though no longer solo. It is likely there will be a trip four!

Facilities were great a varied from top end rooms to camping spots.

Authenticity & Character
Location
If you want natural beauty to be part of the experience--and you like isolation and don't mind a rough trip on a rough road this is a great place to have as part of a trip
Staff
Dining room staff less than welcoming and attentive--this stood our in our trip over three weeks. Spa attendant was not the friendliness guy I encountered.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Cleanliness and comfort solid but how to navigate in the hotel was confusing

Siglufjörður

One of the hotels I will book for trip number five.

Wait staff is uneven. From top-notch bar tender and magager to a couple of young men who had trouble communicating and unsure about booking a dinner reservation.

I would never recommend this place or stay in it again. Dangerous facilities and the most unfriendly people we encountered in Iceland

If they were not the only option this place would no longer be in business. Classic example of what happens when the wrong people have no competition.

Authenticity & Character
Location
Location is at the heart of the problem. Also a bit of snootiness that was encountered at the front desk and a poor room assignment--which I had changed.
Staff
Reception desk staff was uneven. One stood out like the hotel was doing us a favor, but another was friendly and helpful and managed the room change.

In spite of the challenging weather I loved this activity. As a former horse guy, it was great to get to ride an Icelandic horse. I would do a longer ride next time in Iceland.

Thank you for the great review Ray!
We have talked privately about what went wrong at Hótel Djúpavík, and as I said, I have talked to the manager in person (not over the phone), so I won't go into that here. I'll just repeat what I said: I am truly sorry you had such a bad experience with the owners.

As for the driving instructions, yes, it is extremely important that you use only my maps and nothing else, exactly for this reason. My map would not have taken you to the ferry, as I never intended for you to take it, it was never booked and never mentioned in the trip plan.
But well, let's look at the bright side, it was a little side-adventure.

I'm very happy that everything else went great and I do hope to get to plan your next trip to Iceland!

All the best

She listened to our interests, and had great insight into the activities that we would find interesting. Additionally, she was easy to contact and very responsive, checking in with us several times during the two weeks in Scotland. One of our favorite days was in Edinburgh, where she scheduled us with a private guide to take us to Rosslyn Chapel and Glenkinchie Distillery. Both activities were very enjoyable, and she found a great guide for us. I would not hesitate to use Kim Kim for our travel plans in the future.
