We have just returned from a truly wonderful 14-day February trip to Chile, booked on kimkim with the excellent, professional help of Jesse. First we must write about Jesse. From the moment I began looking into doing this trip, Jesse provided thorough, competent, and sensitive assistance. She "listened " to all our hopes and preferences, designing for us the trip of a lifetime. She adjusted hotels for us to make the package more affordable. And every tour she arranged for us revealed things we had hoped for and amenities we couldn't even have imagined - like early morning outdoor breakfasts in the desert, and phenomenal trekking and viewing experiences.

Once we arrived in Chile, again, Jesse could not have been more helpful. Communicating with her on WhatsApp, she ensured that all pick-ups and drop-offs went smoothly, and answered all the questions we had immediately, even sometimes quite late at night. Her responses were always kind and personable. We always knew we were in good hands with her guidance, and when we return to Chile - which we will! - we hope we will be lucky enough to work with Jesse again.

We began our trip in Santiago, and thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Valparaiso, with its incredible murals and steep, winding streets. Our guide, Javi, made sure we spent as much time as possible walking those streets, and she pointed out many treasures that we would have missed without her help. And we were thrilled with the "San Jose Volcano and Andes Mountains" experience. We had our guide, Juan Paulo, all to ourselves, and his love of the area and of the climb was so evident and genuine that it filled us with love for the experience, as well. He was also a true professional, teaching us things about the flora and fauna and ensuring that we were always safe as we climbed and descended.

Then we flew to the Atacama desert, and began our time there there with what was my favourite tour of all - the "Atacama Experience." We visited the farm of Gonzalo, a young indigenous farmer who introduced us to his llamas, and then demonstrated and talked us through the experience of making pottery with local materials, helping us each to create pieces of pottery that we could take home. Next we sat 'round a small fire with him while he prepared infusions from local herbs, which we gratefully drank. And last of all, he "gave" us each a llama to walk, and we spent an hour or so walking with "our" llamas in the desert as the sun was setting. Gonzalo was an excellent, knowledgeable and gentle host whose passion for the way of life he was retaining has stayed with me and made me want to return to Atacama.

Everything we experienced in the Atacama was wonderful. Our guide for "Exploring the Atacama Salt Flats" and "Valley of the Moon Tour" was Daniel - a true professional with an uproarious sense of humour. We learned about the salt flats, saw statuesque flamingos and wild vicunas with their young and had a great outdoor breakfast. Daniel brought us to a small village where he helped us find and purchase genuine alpaca products - and when we saw things we wanted to photograph he always made that possible. We were thrilled to have him as a guide again to visit the Valley of the Moon. The trek along the salt caves and stone formations was awe-inspiring, and Daniel thoroughly explained the formation of these geological wonders.

Marta was our guide to the Tatio Geysers, and she too was a wealth of knowledge and a great outdoor breakfast provider. And seeing the geysers steaming into the air at sunrise was beautiful and otherworldly.

I was sad to leave the desert, but other wonders awaited us. We flew to Santiago and from there, via Puerto Montt, to Puerto Varas. We loved our "Day Trip to Vincente Perez Rosales National Park" as well as our wonderful and quick-witted guide, Jorge. The highlight of this tour for us was the amazing view of the volcanoes and glaciers, and our ascent of the Osorno volcano. We chose to take the lifts up the side of the volcano, and I'd recommend that to anyone taking this tour. We also had a fabulous lunch of local salmon. All the while Jorge had us learning and laughing. He was an excellent guide.

Nest we went "Trekking in Alerce Andino National Park" with Luis, whose knowledge of local flora was impressive. He shared with us his fascination with the plants, flowers, and trees of this rainforest - and kindly taught us a lot of Spanish, which really pleased us.

Then we flew to Punta Arenas. It proved too windy to go see the penguins on Magdelena Island, but we enjoyed time to ourselves exploring the town with its amazing waterfront statues. We could feel the pull of Antarctica from there. Punta Arenas is another place we'd like to return to.

In Puerto Natales. the "Boat Tour to Balmaceda and Serrano Glaciers" was a fantastic day. We saw sweeping waterfalls, sea lions resting on shore, and beautiful views of the glaciers. It was doubly gratifying to be able to land and walk to the base of one of them, where the view was amazing. So was our stop at the ranch and our meal of lamb there. And so was our surprise treat of whisky served with glacier ice, on the boat!

We finished our time in Patagonia with a day of trekking Torres del Paine. Three treks in one day was challenging, but the views of mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls was memorable.

Jesse and Kimkim made all of this happen for us, and we will certainly want to work with them both again for our next South American adventure. Thank you for this amazing experience.

The Atacama Experience was absolutely my favorite part of the trip. We visited a farm where Gonzalo, who I wouldn't even call a guide, shared so much about the landscape, traditions, and the animals. His explanations made the desert come alive for me.

The Trekking Torres del Paine Active tour was great, however, we didn't see as much wildlife as we hoped. We probably started too late in the morning to see animals like pumas or guanacos. Also, the tour included three hikes in one day, which was quite intense. Perhaps two hikes would have been enough.

The Valley of the Moon Tour in Atacama was stunning, but I think a warning should be included about the narrow and high trail. It might be daunting for those who have a fear of heights. Despite that, we were fine and enjoyed the beauty.

We had a fantastic trip organized by Ravi and Idityah Tikoo with Active India Holidays. This was our second Kim Kim trip, and we are heading on a third next month. We so appreciate the Kim Kim platform for ease of communication in planning and for their excellent vetting of tour providers. The trip Ravi planned was excellent. The coordination and local knowledge at every stop was really impressive. I remember at one point, stepping out into the wonderful chaos on the street outside of the Taj Mahal and our driver, Mr. Singh, zooming in to pick us up without missing a beat. The traffic is absolutely insane in India and our group marveled at how all our guides coordinated with Mr. Singh for inexplicably perfect transfers. Mr. Singh was a hero -- an impressive, friendly and safe driver (not to be underestimated with the traffic. I might also add that he was brave!). Other guides and helpers that we appreciated were Adarsh in Delhi (who in our last hours in India, late at night, made sure we caught showers and dinner as we were heading to the airport for our long flights home), Dharmendra (we loved Delhi with the Sikh Temple as one of the highlights), Gaj in Udaipur (a master of tricky Udaipur traffic along with Mr. Singh), Sanjay (for a wonderful time in Jaipur, including a wander through the flower market), Ronit (so knowledgable about Agra and the Taj -- not to be missed!) and finally, Mohan in Varanasi (what a great tour of a mind-blowing city). We really wouldn't have changed anything in our itinerary. We really enjoyed all the historic hotels. Restaurant choices were really good and we all stayed healthy. Thank you so much, Ravi & Co! All your choices were spot on. Five stars!

This hotel was excellent for us and a departure from the heritage hotels to which we usually gravitate. Air quality in December was challenging, and we welcomed a very up-to-date hotel for its modern HVAC system. We didn't have a problem with air quality in the other hotels over the course of our trip, but it was nice to have a bit of a modern reset at this hotel. It's big, it's shiny, it has a huge breakfast buffet. Good choice.

Beautiful hotel, worth taking the time to wander around. Sunrise over the lake from our room was really special. I feel like we had particularly good rooms for that (thanks, Ravi!). The restaurant patio is lakeside and stunning. We enjoyed watching the early morning bathers and swimmers while eating breakfast. Good breakfast buffet with made-to-order dosa. We had the craziest, most memorable tuk tuk ride through the narrow streets to get back to the hotel one evening. Loved it!

The planning framework was thoughtful, and the execution reflected real effort behind the scenes. Coordinating a five-week, multi-country journey with frequent hotel changes, drivers, flights, and activity transitions is complex, yet it was handled efficiently and with clear structure. There were many moving parts, and for the most part, they connected smoothly.

Our interactions with Lucy, our travel Specialist, were professional and steady throughout (via Whatsapp). Communication was clear, responses were timely, and it was evident she was actively monitoring the itinerary as we moved from place to place. When small issues arose — which is inevitable on a trip of this length — they were addressed promptly and constructively, without friction. That allowed us to focus on the experience rather than the logistics.

Overall, the guides arranged through KimKim were mostly excellent. They were knowledgeable, personable, and spoke very good English. Just as important, they were easy to spend a full day with — something that becomes critical when you are traveling intensively. A few were truly outstanding, offering depth, context, and a natural ability to read the group. Others were solid and dependable, though somewhat more scripted. Still, the overall standard remained high.

Several guides also demonstrated flexibility when plans shifted slightly due to weather, timing, or our own preferences. That adaptability made the experience feel more personal and less rigid.

Hotel Reviews
Amara Bangkok

The Amara Bangkok is a solid 3.5-star stay overall. The room size worked well for two people with luggage — not always a given in this category. The layout was practical and thoughtfully arranged, and it didn’t feel cluttered after a long travel day. You could actually open suitcases without having to reshuffle the entire room each morning. The space felt efficient and comfortable. The staff were consistently cordial and pleasant. Easy to approach, helpful when needed, and never intrusive. Service felt steady and professional. Breakfast was a strong point. A generous spread with both Thai options and familiar Western choices, allowing for variety from one morning to the next. It was a reliable and enjoyable way to start the day. There were, however, a few surprising gaps. The gym was essentially a small room with a couple of machines — no comprehensive workout setup, not even a yoga mat. The rooftop pool, which looks impressive online, turned out to be relatively small and consistently crowded. The atmosphere felt more congested than relaxing. The bar pricing was also noticeably high, edging closer to gouging than hospitality. Overall, this is not a destination hotel, and it does not position itself as one. It functions well as a practical base: comfortable room, friendly staff, and a strong breakfast. The core offering is solid, though some of the amenities do not quite align with the expectations suggested by its presentation.

Panvaree Resort
Khao Sok

Reviewing Panvaree The Greenery is not simple, because the experience genuinely pulls you in different directions. Let me start with what truly stands out. The views – 6 out of 5. Absolutely breathtaking. Waking up to limestone cliffs rising out of emerald water feels almost unreal. The early morning mist drifting across Cheow Lan Lake, long-tail boats cutting quietly through the water, sunset light hitting the rock faces — it is spectacular. Few places deliver scenery at this level. This alone makes the journey worthwhile. The staff – 6 out of 5. Pleasant, accommodating, warm, and genuinely kind. From the moment you step onto the floating dock, you feel welcomed. There is sincerity in the way they interact. A special mention to the Valentine’s Day dinner — we were pleasantly surprised by a beautifully arranged spread, with thoughtful decorations that made the evening feel festive and personal. It was an unexpected touch and very well executed. The program – 5 out of 5. Well organized and thoughtfully structured. The boat tours and lake activities are enjoyable and showcase the natural beauty of the area. The only drawback: the kayaks. The paddles are unusually heavy, which limits how long you can comfortably explore. In a setting like this, better equipment would meaningfully improve the experience. The food – 4 out of 5. Nicely presented and generous in portion. Overall good, though at times slightly bland and a bit oily for my personal taste. That said, dining while floating in the middle of the lake adds a certain magic that elevates the meal beyond the plate itself. Now the challenging part. The accommodation – 2 out of 5. The rooms are small and tight (for a couple with their luggage) . The bathroom is fully wet-style. Wi-Fi is unstable and difficult to rely on — and there is no cellular coverage. Air conditioning does not operate between 7am and 1pm. I understand the logistical constraints of running a floating resort inside a national park, and that context matters. Still, expectations should be clearly aligned with reality before arrival. Overall verdict: If you come expecting luxury comfort, you may be disappointed. If you come for nature, scenery, a unique floating experience, and very attentive staff — you will absolutely be rewarded.

Authenticity & Character
authenticity — though not in a polished, design-forward way. This is not a stylized boutique concept created to look “local.” It is a simple floating resort anchored in the middle of Cheow Lan Lake.

The views – absolutely breathtaking.
Staff
accommodating, warm, and genuinely kind.

The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort
Krabi

We had a fantastic stay at The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort in a pool-view room on the second floor. The room was thoughtfully designed, with enough space for two people and luggage without feeling tight. Everything was spotless, and we especially loved the outdoor shower — it added a relaxed, tropical feel that made the experience even more memorable. What made the stay even more special was the location. The resort sits toward the end of the road on Tubkaak Beach, away from the busier areas of Krabi. We truly appreciated that distance. It limited traffic, outside noise, and random foot traffic along the beach. The setting felt quiet, secluded, and calm — exactly what we were hoping for. It allowed the natural beauty of the beach and the sunsets to take center stage without distraction. The service is what truly elevates this property. The staff are exceptional — not just polite or efficient, but genuinely warm, attentive, and proud of what they do. There is an authenticity in their hospitality. From reception to the restaurant team, housekeeping, spa therapists, and beach staff, everyone contributed to making the stay seamless. You feel recognized. Small details are remembered. Assistance is offered naturally, without being intrusive. That level of care transforms a beautiful hotel into something personal. It makes you look forward to returning after a day out, knowing you will be welcomed with a smile and that everything is taken care of. The breakfasts and dinners were excellent in both quality and presentation. Morning yoga, paddle boarding, long beach walks, spa treatments, and cocktails at sunset directly on the beach created a perfect daily rhythm. The hotel feels intimate, calm, and refined, without being overly formal. A beautifully presented property with truly outstanding service. This is the kind of place you return to — not only for the setting, but for the people who make it special.

Authenticity & Character
It does not feel like a large international resort dropped onto a beach. The architecture incorporates traditional Thai design elements — warm wood tones, layered roofs, open-air spaces, and lush tropical landscaping that blends naturally into the surroundings. The scale of the property also adds to its charm. It feels intimate rather than expansive. Pathways wind through greenery, buildings are low-rise, and nothing overwhelms the natural setting. The design respects the beach rather than competing with it.
Location
A major plus is the location. The resort sits toward the end of the road on Tubkaak Beach, well away from the busier areas of Krabi. We genuinely appreciated that distance. It limited traffic, outside noise, and random foot traffic along the beach. The setting felt quiet, secluded, and calm — exactly what we were hoping for. It gave the entire stay a sense of privacy and exclusivity that is increasingly hard to find. The only downside of that same seclusion is accessibility. When we wanted to venture out to explore restaurants or bars outside the resort, it was not particularly convenient. Transportation is required, and there are no easy walkable alternatives nearby. For us, it was a trade-off worth making for the peace and beauty of the setting — but it is something future guests should be aware of.
Staff
There are honestly not enough praising words to describe the staff. They are not simply professional — they are genuinely gracious. Every interaction feels natural, never scripted. Smiles are real. Conversations are unhurried. There is a quiet attentiveness in the way they notice details, anticipate needs, and follow through without being asked twice. What stood out most was the consistency. It was not one exceptional individual; it was everyone. Reception, housekeeping, restaurant team, spa therapists, beach attendants — the standard never dipped. You feel welcomed, not processed. Cared for, not managed.
Cleanliness & Comfort

De Chai The Colonial Hotel & Spa
Chiang Mai

Our room at the De Chai The Colonial Hotel & Spa had room for 2 travelers with their luggage, with a modern, simple design, with a somewhat limited (partially obscured) view. That said, it did not detract from the overall comfort. The space was well maintained, nicely laid out, and clean. The bed was comfortable, and housekeeping kept everything in good order throughout our stay. The location is a major advantage. It is an easy walk to the Old City, multiple restaurants, temples, and numerous massage spots. The night markets are about a 10–20 minute walk away, close enough to be convenient but far enough to avoid the noise and crowds late at night. Service was excellent. The staff were genuinely caring and attentive, and interactions felt warm rather than transactional. Breakfast was good with solid variety, though the coffee was on the weaker side. Overall, a well-located hotel in Chiang Mai offering clean, comfortable rooms and consistently strong service.

Authenticity & Character
The colonial-inspired architecture and design give it a distinct visual identity. The exterior façade, interior detailing, and overall atmosphere feel intentional and cohesive. It does not feel like a generic chain hotel. There is personality in the styling.

Le Bel Air Resort Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang

Le Bel Air Resort Luang Prabang has a distinct French colonial style, visible both in the buildings and in the room we stayed in. The design carries through nicely, and the room felt cohesive and well thought out. Having a large bathroom with a generous counter and two sinks was a real plus. There was ample space for two people traveling with check-in luggage. We also enjoyed the balcony, especially in the evenings and in the morning with tea—it added to the sense of calm. From a practical standpoint, everything worked well. Water pressure was consistently good, there was plenty of hot water, and the air conditioning worked perfectly—something you really appreciate in this climate. This is a great place to relax. With relatively few guests, the property feels quiet and peaceful, offering a nice level of privacy. The atmosphere is calm and beautiful, with lush greenery throughout. Each area feels intentionally arranged, and the poolside zone is especially pleasant. The swimming pool was clean and inviting. The hotel staff was welcoming and accommodating throughout our stay, which added to the overall comfort and ease. We also appreciated the in-room and hotel amenities, including the nicely sized pool with bar service. The shuttle service to and from downtown and the night market was very convenient and made getting around easy. The main shortcoming was breakfast buffet. The selection of Lao food was very limited, and on our last day there were none at all. The Western options were average and felt repetitive. The coffee was particularly disappointing—weak, diluted, and prepared in a basic drip style into a large pot. Overall, this was a relaxing and welcoming stay. With a stronger breakfast offering, this place could easily be a top-notch hotel.

Mintra Hotel
Vientiane

We did NOT stay and the Mintra Hotel but rather at the Salana Boutique Hotel (2 blocks away). The Salana Boutique Hotel is in a central, highly walkable location in Vientiane. Temples, restaurants, cafés, and key sights are all within easy reach, which made it simple to explore the city on foot without relying on transportation. The setting strikes a nice balance — convenient, yet not overly hectic. From the moment we arrived, the staff were welcoming and attentive. Check-in and check-out were smooth and efficient. Throughout our stay, the team was consistently helpful, offering advice and assisting with small requests without hesitation. That level of service makes a real difference when traveling between multiple destinations, where ease and reliability matter. Our room was a good size, with ample space for two people and luggage. The bed was comfortable, and the layout felt practical rather than cramped. The bathroom was also well proportioned, with a proper shower cubicle and good water pressure — always appreciated after a long day out exploring the city.

MK Premier Boutique hotel
Hanoi

Our stay at MK Premier Boutique Hotel Hanoi was pleasant overall, with a few trade-offs worth noting. We had a front-facing room with a balcony, which unfortunately reduced the usable room size quite a bit. For two people traveling with luggage, the space already felt tight, and the balcony layout made it more so. Because of street noise, we didn’t end up using the balcony at all, so it felt like wasted space m. Choose a room without a balcony On the positive side, the staff were genuinely welcoming and friendly throughout our stay—helpful without being overbearing. Breakfast was also a highlight, with many options and dishes prepared fresh, which made mornings easy and enjoyable. Overall, good service and an excellent breakfast, but if space matters, a quieter, non-balcony bigger room might be the better choice.

It was a welcoming hotel with wonderful staff and great breakfast. I could not say that it had a special character

Bangkok City Tour Full Day (RA-S)
Bangkok

Our full day in Bangkok was intense, colorful, and ultimately very rewarding — a comprehensive introduction to the city’s historical and cultural heart. Overall, this tour captures Bangkok’s contrasts — royal grandeur, spiritual depth, urban intensity, and river life — all in a single, well-structured day. It is full, but it delivers a strong and memorable overview of Bangkok. We loved the massage at the Wat Pho, massage school

he morning at the Panvaree The Greenery was pleasant and relaxed, a nice way to close the stay. The boat transfer back to Cheow Lan Pier was well organized and ran smoothly. This time, the transportation logistics worked much better. The driver met us directly at the boat dock, which made the transition seamless. We were then taken comfortably to the airport, with a short stop for lunch along the way. Overall, the return journey was efficient and well coordinated.

Day 2 at Panvaree The Greenery
Khao Sok National Park

The activities organized by Panvaree The Greenery were well paced and thoughtfully structured. There was a good balance between guided excursions and free time, allowing us to enjoy the lake without feeling rushed or over-scheduled. The boat tours, swimming , and relaxed periods to kayak or simply sit and take in the scenery created a natural rhythm to the stay. Nothing felt forced. The timing worked well with the light, the weather, and the overall atmosphere of the lake. Overall, the program was very enjoyable and contributed significantly to what became an excellent and memorable experience.

Food
The food was good overall, with generous portions and thoughtful presentation. Importantly, they made sure I had vegetarian/pescatarian options at every meal. The transfer experience was less smooth than expected. The driver/guide did not speak English, so we had to communicate through the staff at The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort before departure. That made coordination more complicated than it needed to be. Upon arrival at the harbor, we were dropped off in the parking lot without guidance or assistance. In a busy, somewhat chaotic setting with multiple boats and operators, it would have been helpful to be escorted to the correct pier or at least clearly handed over to the next team. Instead, we were left to navigate the situation ourselves. Yet, once we were "found" by the Panvaree The Greenery staff it was a smooth wonderful experience.

Quality of Experience
The transportation to Panvaree The Greenery was unfortunately quite poor and disorganized, which created unnecessary stress at the start of the journey. However, once we arrived at Panvaree The Greenery, the experience completely changed. The setting is extraordinary, the staff welcoming and attentive, and the overall atmosphere unique and memorable. The natural beauty of Cheow Lan Lake and the warmth of the team quickly made us forget the difficult transfer. In short: the journey there needs improvement — but the destination itself was absolutely worth it.

7 Islands - Bio-Luminescent Swimming
Krabi

Due to weather, our original sunset 7-island tour with the bioluminescent swim was changed at the last minute to a morning 4-island tour without the bio-luminescent component (we are still waiting on clarification regarding the refund). Unfortunately, this adjustment did not feel like a good use of our time. Our hotel offered a very similar 4-island experience directly from the beach in front of the property. Had we booked locally, we would have avoided roughly two hours of travel each way, as our transfer involved picking up and dropping off other passengers along the route. In total, close to four hours of the day were spent in transit. In addition, the group size — about 16 people — made the experience feel less personal and less intimate than we had expected. A smaller boat departing directly from the hotel would likely have created a more relaxed atmosphere and a smoother flow to the day. We understand that weather conditions require flexibility, but in this case the alternative offered did not match the value or experience of the original plan.

The starting time of this anticipated activity was moved earlier (from 430 PM to 3 PM), while we were caught in a very long immigration line at Chiang Mai airport. As a result, we only arrived for the final 45 minutes of the Monk Chat That said, even those last 45 minutes were highly engaging. The discussion was open, thoughtful, and refreshingly direct. The monks answered questions candidly, offering insight into Buddhist practice, daily monastic life, and broader cultural perspectives. It felt authentic and unscripted. We genuinely wished we had been able to attend the full three hours. Even a short portion left us wanting more.

Saa paper making class – Living Land Experience
Luang Prabang

Both activities were unique and genuinely interesting. We learned a great deal about traditional paper making and paper art. Mrs. Ting introduced the history and vision behind preserving this craft, explaining not only the technique but also its cultural importance. The process itself was engaging — working with natural fibers and incorporating fresh flowers into the sheets gave a new appreciation for something that can appear decorative, yet carries real depth and heritage. In the afternoon, we continued to a community-based rice farm set in the countryside. There, we had the opportunity to experience aspects of a farmer’s daily routine — planting, working the fields, and understanding the rhythm of rice cultivation. It added perspective to something we often take for granted. The visit extended beyond rice. We explored small handicraft workshops, including bamboo weaving, blacksmithing, and sugarcane processing, each demonstrating skills passed down through generations. The tour concluded with a walk through the organic garden, where natural herbs and their uses in traditional medicine were explained. The day combined creativity, agriculture, and rural life — offering a grounded and authentic look at local traditions beyond the temples and city streets.

The cooking class was fun because of the company we had. Two other travelers were in our little group. The cooking class itself seemed a little “let’s wing it” kinda thing. Upon one of the participants’ request, the cooking instructor emailed us the recipes later. There was also some confusion on a dancing class post dinner. Also it wasn’t a 2hr50 min activity. More like under 2 hours. All in all, a little disappointing. The food was yummy though.

Less than stellar. The unfortunate thing was slow communication with the Travel Provider. There were often delays during the planning. Most critically, there were major delays DURING the trip which caused us to have to scramble and make alternative arrangements on our own. Ultimately the service provider/agent did make things right, issuing refunds and becoming more responsive. But it left a bad taste in our mouth re: Kimkim.
I will say the KimKim platform is cumbersome. Having to login to mobile web browser to chat, instead of a dedicated app with chat capabilities, is not ideal.

The logistics of landing in San Jose at 1:00 and getting the car and to our hotel meant there was not time to walk around San Jose. We didn't get to the hotel until after 5:00. Again, not a problem, but a heads up. Rush hour traffic in San Jose is slow like a sloth.

El Presidente hotel was great. Mawamba Lodge was lovely. Pacuare Lodge was spectacular and the tours and guides there were fantastic! And Banana Azul was fine... but after Pacuare Lodge, nothing was going to feel as lovely. Tours in Puerto Viejo were good. All in all, a lovely trip and the help planning it was essential.

Thank you to Kat and the whole team!

Hotel Reviews
Mawamba Lodge
Tortuguero

Mawamba Lodge is set in an excellent location, accessible only by boat. While it wasn't as welcoming as Pacuare Lodge, the location offered a chance to walk into town, which made us appreciate the peaceful setting outside the town of Tortuguero. The lodge was lovely, and the guides and activities were great; however, I might consider trying another lodge in the area if I return, possibly one managed by Böëna, since their lodge experiences seem to stand out.

Hotel Presidente
San José

Hotel Presidente in San José offered a pleasant experience. We enjoyed a great dinner at their lovely restaurant, which made for a relaxing start to our trip. Though it didn't quite match the grandeur of other accommodations on our trip, it provided a comfortable stay in the heart of the city.

Hotel Banana Azul
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Hotel Banana Azul in Puerto Viejo was perfectly fine but felt a bit jarring after staying at Pacuare Lodge. It's located right on a road with some traffic, but it's just a short path from the beach, which would be great for beach lovers. We stayed in a lovely little room with an immersion pool, which was nice. The location allowed us to easily get into town and move around, so overall it was a satisfactory stay.

We had a driver, Alex, who was very personable and taught us a lot about Costa Rica. Loved having him as our driver! The car was comfortable, clean, and well maintained. We felt very safe riding with Alex.
We went on a river float with Flow Trips. What a great team! Our guide was very knowledgeable and took care to position us so we could see the animals along the way. It was a very enjoyable outing. Highly recommend Flow Trips.
We went on a night hike in Monte Verde with Bosque Eterno de Los Ninos. Very knowledgeable guide who made sure we got to see lots of different animal life.
We did an all day Adventure at Selvatura Park, including zip line, hanging bridges, and butterfly and sloth exhibitions. Exhausting, but so worth it!
We had another driver, Andres, who was very professional and a pleasure to travel with. Did some stops that made the long ride so fun! Again, the car was comfortable, clean, and well maintained.
In Manuel Antonio we went on a morning hike in Manuel Antonio National Park with Endemic Bird. This was my husband’s favorite outing. Highly recommend Endemic Bird! We also went on a sailboat sunset tour with Planet Dolphin. What a great way to end our stay! If you’re in Manuel Antonio, do a catamaran tour. You will love it!

Our driver, Zaid was exceptional. He was professional, incredibly careful on the roads, and genuinely kind. We always felt safe and well cared for — and his warmth added so much to the overall joy of the journey.

In Marrakesh, our guide Mohamed was equally outstanding. His knowledge, energy, and passion brought both the walking tour and the food tour to life. He helped us see the city beyond the surface and made the experience meaningful and memorable.

One of our favorite highlights was staying at the Agafay Desert camp. It was stunning and completely unexpected — serene skies, camels at sunset, and sleeping in our hut under the stars. It felt magical and unlike anything we’ve ever done.

We are so grateful for such a seamless and unforgettable adventure. Highly recommend!

It perfectly blends Moroccan charm with a subtle French refinement, creating such a unique and welcoming atmosphere. The breakfast buffet was superb, with wonderful variety and quality, and dinner in the restaurant felt elegant and special — a true dining experience. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and overall everything worked beautifully… except for the coffee machine, which gave us a bit of a morning challenge (lol!). But even that added a little character to the stay. All in all, it was a memorable and delightful place to stay, and we would happily return.

Dear Liz and Alex,

Thank you so much for your lovely review. It was truly a pleasure having you with us in Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido.

While we were all hoping for perfect conditions, transparency always comes first — and we’re glad we could cancel the bioluminescence experience in time and process the refund smoothly. Experiences in nature are magical, but only when conditions are right.

I’ll be sure to share your kind words with Eduardo. And we hope Alex’s birthday surprise made the celebration even sweeter.

We’d love to welcome you back to Mexico anytime — there’s always more to discover.

Hugo and the Rutopia Team.
