Our trip planner, Guilia, was excellent. Her responses on text and e-mail were immediate and she was able to orchestrate many moving parts seamlessly. I loved the personalized travel application for each family member since we had a number of schedules to manage. I loved the kimkim communication platform which help me organize my thoughts and respond quickly for answers I knew and later for things I had to delay. It would have been helpful to know in advance the walking times to our various tour destination points. A preprinted map with meeting points, restaurants and bars may have been useful. Our cooking class was delightful but it was scheduled at 7pm and the pasta was finished and served at 9pm. It was also not enough to be considered dinner for six people. It was a snack and would have been a nice light lunch or day activity. Our tour guides were very sweet and knowledgeable but we suffered from tour guide fatigue and had to cut our last (4th) tour short. Also, next time I will ask the planner to add restaurant recommendations to use as a starting point for planning. Hotel location on the water was perfect for our family of adults with plenty of cafes and space for gathering. We loved our sunny weekend in the fascinating city of Venice. Thank you!

Thank you Laurel for your very nice review, I am really happy to hear that you enjoyed your family trip in Venice! 😊
I am only sorry to hear that the food was not enough during the cooking class: it was a Pasta and Tiramisù cooking class, that was supposed to include also an apéritif...so this certainly would not include any second dish or extra side dishes, but the Pasta was supposed to be enough for all of you.
Thank you for this feedback, it is the very first time we receive such a remark about the quantity of food, so I have immediately contacted our partner to understand what happened. Thank you for letting me know!
As far as the starting time of the cooking class is concerned, I am sorry to hear that it was finally too late for you, but as you will certainly remember...you specifically asked me to move the starting time to 7pm so that you could have the entire afternoon at your leisure and the time to get ready for the cooking class with no rush on that day. I should have maybe been clearer about the fact that you would not be able to start eating before 8.30-9pm, considering the time needed to prepare your dinner.
I am also glad to hear that you liked the Vamoos app and the personalization of the schedules for the different family members! I hoped that sending the restaurants recommendations well in advance to the final roadbook (I sent them around mid-February so you could have the time to carefully reason about restaurants) would have been enough, but yes, if you have specific needs or wishes about restaurants, it is definitely important to clearly let your planner know, so that the rest of the trip can be "built" accordingly.
The weather was so perfect over Easter weekend, I am so happy that you were so lucky during your holiday!
Thank you for the time you reserved to letting us have all your precious feedbacks, and I really hope that despite the ittle inconveniences you pointed out, your vacation was finally as good as expected!
A big hug from Italy!

The trip included a well, thought-out driving schedule and pre-booked birding guides along with enough free time to do some hiking or extra tours on our own if we felt like it at the time. Yuliana answered my questions that I dropped in the chat box in a timely manner. The only negative that I had was that I did not get the detailed package drop as soon as I would have liked. I think at least 2 weeks before a trip would be a better timeline than one week.

Sarapiquis Rainforest Lodge
Sarapiquí

We only stayed here for one night but it was a great location. Less than a 5-minute walk to the Tirimbina Rainforest Center which was good as we did the Chocolate tour and the night tour there. The pool at this hotel overlooks a small canyon full of tropical foliage. Food was good and reasonably priced. We left too early for breakfast, so they had a small breakfast bag sitting on the checkout desk for us to pick up at 5:30 am.

Authenticity & Character

Maquenque Eco Lodge
Boca Tapada

This was definitely an ecolodge. Just what we were hoping for! Needing to take a ferry across the river to get to the place definitely sets the tone for an adventure. Food was great and well-priced. We stayed in the lakeside in a cabin and could watch howler monkeys in the trees across the way. Enough trails to get in some decent walks and birding. The optional excursion to the Nicaraguan border was really worth it to see the countryside, wildlife, and culture. The pool is nice, but could use more chairs and tables. Towels and sunscreen provided. We had to walk to the bar to order drinks, so it might have been better to just grab something from the refrigerator in our room.

Authenticity & Character
Every part of this hotel has character from arriving in the parking lot to walking to dinner at the open air dining room overlooking a lagoon.

Hotel San Bada Resort & Spa
Manuel Antonio

This place is steps from the gate to Manuel Antonio NP. Nice to not have to move the car once we got there. The 6th floor was our favorite part of the hotel. It has an adult-only pool overlooking the NP so you can hear parrots and parakeets while sitting poolside. The 4-6 pm happy hour while watching the sunset off the other side was even better. I wished we liked Sushi better as there all you can eat for $25 looked like a good idea. Breakfast had a lot of options and there are multiple restaurants within walking distance if you don't want to stay at the hotel for other meals. There is a private gate to access the alley that leads to the beach with only a 5-minute walk. Check-in was pretty strict to its time, but they gave us a key to walk to the beach while we waited. Good, secure parking lot and the main pool looked like fun, although a little worn around the edges. I would stay here again just for the 6th floor and location!

Authenticity & Character
Fairly large sized hotel with entrance on one side and your balcony looking toward the ocean on the other. Might not be impressive if you are on lower floors as the ocean view overlooks an old apartment complex.
Location
We came for the park, we stayed at the park. Need I say more?
Staff
Helpful and pleasant. Turn-down room service attendant was very pleasant.
Cleanliness & Comfort
It's still a beach hotel, so the weather takes its toll and there can be bugs. However, our room was clean, beds comfortable, AC quiet and efficient. Struggled with hot water on occasion, maybe due to when everyone else was taking a shower.
Rancho Naturalista
Cartago

This place was amazing! Very homey and welcoming. Great bird-watching right outside your window but you can also hike up the trails to see different ecotones and different birds. The food was very tasty and plentiful, and the staff goes out of their way to make you comfortable. The owner found us a birding guide at the last minute who was very helpful in learning the birds of the areas and which trails to take to see them. The beds are comfortable and the rooms large. No AC, but not needed while we were there. There was a window fan for those of us who need air moving to sleep best. The second floor deck is supplied with coffee, tea, snacks, chairs and hummingbird feeders so you don't even need to walk out the door to explore if you don't want to.

Authenticity & Character
Exactly what you want in an ecolodge.
Location
Located in the highlands. We saw birds that we did not see anywhere else on our trip.
Staff
They even packed us a lunch to go our last day!
Cleanliness & Comfort
Beds were comfortable and the room was clean.
Hotel de Montaña Suria
San Gerardo de Dota

Fantastic location at the bottom of a canyon. Hotel has nice gardens for birding. Located within walking distance of a waterfall hike and 2 km from a Quetzal nest. Food at the restaurant was good and reasonably priced. Restaurant staff was phenomenal! So nice and pleasant and always there (we hope they get to go home sometimes)! The drive in is challenging if you are not used to downshifting and mountain roads. Room was clean. Mattresses were a little worn and need flipping. Did not like that they wanted to charge an additional $10 per person to walk into their birding garden that they have onsite where they put out feeders. That should be included with the room if you are staying there. Or, just put feeders around the grounds. That would be even better.

Authenticity & Character
Nice setting. Feeders should be around the grounds instead of locked in a small area.
Location
Staff
Front desk staff was impersonal. Restaurant staff was great.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Needs new mattresses or rotate the mattresses more.

This hotel was a good start to our trip. After a long flight, it was nice to walk the 1.8 miles into downtown to the artisan market and theatre area and only ~$6 to take Uber back after dark. The hotel room was quiet and clean and they upgraded us to two queen beds which was very nice. The breakfast was plentiful with many options and the staff was helpful and pleasant. We ate dinner in the downtown area before heading back as the options near the hotel looked limited. Overall, a nice stay.

I am very happy to hear that the trip delivered the experiences you were hoping for, especially the birding opportunities, visits to ecolodges, and time exploring areas off the typical tourist path. Costa Rica is such a special destination for birdwatching, and I am glad you were able to enjoy the incredible biodiversity and have time for both guided birding and independent exploration.

Thank you as well for mentioning the planning process and communication. I always do my best to respond quickly and make the planning experience as smooth as possible.

I also truly appreciate your feedback regarding the timing of the final detailed trip documents. Your comment is very helpful, and I will certainly keep this in mind as I continue improving the experience for future travelers.

It was a pleasure working with you, and I hope the memories of your birding journey in Costa Rica stay with you for many years. You are always welcome back if you decide to explore more of the country in the future.

Bella coordinated all the transfers and tickets and we never felt alone in Japan.

From the moment we set foot in Japan our guides Roy and Hiroshi were very knowledgeable of the history, culture, country, cities, and places we visited. We had many questions of what it was like to live in Japan and as well as the customs and practices of the Japanese people. They shared their knowledge and experience of their life in Japan in an easy and personable manner. We invited them to dine with us and they were superlative dinner guests. They made themselves available to us even after they dropped us off at the hotel. They watched over us to the point of assisting Larry with walking and carrying his backpack. Roy, just before our Go Kart experience in Tokyo, turned to Larry and said "Take care of Patty".

Elena, Nancy & Adrian at Serendipity Adventures planned everything: airports transfers, two fantastic properties (Arenal Springs Resort and Hotel La Mariposa), and a full slate of daily adventures across Arenal/La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio.

The itinerary was perfectly paced. We hiked Arenal Volcano and the La Fortuna Waterfall and walked the hanging bridges above the rainforest canopy with our excellent and personable guide Mariano, we went whitewater rafting on the Sarapiquí River (Flow Trips was great!), flew through the trees on Sky Adventures zip lines, explored Manuel Antonio National Park with a guide (big shoutout to Soccio and his son/CR's next best guide, Luther, from Endemic Birds), and wrapped up with a catamaran cruise. Every activity was age-appropriate and kept the whole family engaged. All pickups, transfers, and logistics were handled seamlessly — we never had to figure anything out on our own.

There was one minor hiccup on our first full day where a miscommunication about pickup time caused us to miss an excursion, but Elena and Adrian jumped on it immediately and made adjustments to make it right. That was the only issue across the entire trip, and how they handled it actually reinforced our confidence in them.

If you're considering Costa Rica and don't want to deal with the stress of coordinating everything yourself, I'd highly recommend Serendipity Adventures. Elena was responsive, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and clearly knows the country inside and out. We'd book with them again without hesitation.

Hotel Reviews
Hotel La Mariposa
Manuel Antonio

I've rated everything else about our Costa Rica trip very highly because we had a truly amazing trip overall. Hotel La Mariposa was beautiful -- it has the best panoramic views around -- and, truly, our room was perfectly nice and we had no major issues. I want to give credit to 99% of the staff for being friendly, helpful, and housekeeping was excellent. But, overall, the hotel sure is leaning heavily on that stunning view... The restaurant in particular needs improvement. At the same desk where I made our dinner reservation for our grand finale-- our last dinner of the trip, to be had watching the exquisite sunset over the ocean, when we showed up to that desk at said reservation's time, they treated us as though WE had made some mistake when the reservation was missing from their paperwork. Begrudgingly, it seemed, they sat us despite our "missing" reservation-- but behind other tables and poles, blocking that sunset view. Unfulfilled promises of homemade bread. Drinks stamped with past expiration dates. Cold entrees. Inattentive service. Bland meals. Bland welcome drinks. The pool is illuminated at night, neat... but what's with the strobe effect?! (Read the room, this isn't a rave crowd.) Our shower had weak water pressure, low temperatures, and gross mold and mildew all over the caulking. I know these are all nitpicks, but they're so easy to solve that it was frustrating. It just felt like they're depending on that stunning view to make up for mediocrity elsewhere.

Our week in Seoul was more than we ever could have imagined. Prior to our trip, we had lots of questions and Jessica answered every question thoroughly and completely. From the moment we arrived at the airport, we were picked up and driven to our hotel which was perfect! It was so nice and perfectly located to everything we could want or need. Our private guide, Hera Kim, picked us up on our first day and we were off and running. Gyeongbokgung Palace and hanbok rental was our first adventure and she guided us through and explained the history behind it all. Everything we did and everywhere we went, she gave us detailed information and descriptions. I felt super comfortable with her and we became good friends! Also, our private cooking class with Yum2Lab, Esda, was incredible. We were lucky enough to be in the class by ourselves so she gave us her undivided attention and we learned so much. The meal we prepared was delicious and she explained everything and was so sweet and friendly.

If we ever return to Seoul, we will definitely go through kimkim again and request the services of Hera. She was absolutely incredible! She took all the pictures we could have asked for without having to ask! Our day at the DMZ was amazing. Although fast paced and busy, we could not have navigated that without her. We learned so much from her and hope anyone who visits Seoul can have someone like her to guide them through. It's always a challenge traveling to a foreign place but she made us feel right at home and like a great friend!

Our trip was very active with many different cities, flights, hotels, and activities - everything was flawlessly organized. Using an in-country expert makes a huge difference as we wouldn't have had the expertise or contacts to organize the trip. Our hotels, while not chain's known to us were all very nice - much cleaner and more luxurious than an average US Marriottt. The food was equally high quality and the service outstanding - warm and welcoming. Our tour guides - 3 of them during the trip - were all knowledgeable and eager to assist us and to showcase their home region. Transportation was easy with a dedicated driver in clean and safe vehicles always available to maneuver chaotic streets carefully and calmly. It's really nice to come off a 14-hour flight and have someone with a sign waiting for you to help with your bags and take you to your hotel! Overall, I can't say enough good things about Doris and about KimKim. I highly recommend both!

Our favorite parts of the trip were floating in the Sian Ka’an and going to see the ruins in Calakmul. Being so far out in the rainforest. Seeing monkeys swing from the trees, and climbing up the ruins to see the amazing views from above is something we will never forget! My one critique is that a couple of the activities that we had planned on the itinerary were not what was described for us. We were put in a large group tour to Chichén itza when we were told it would just be a small group tour and it felt very rushed that whole day. Other than a couple discrepancies like that between the itinerary and what really happened, the trip went smoothly and kimkim did a great job helping us plan it. Thank you kimkim!

João patiently adjusted the plans as I added people, removed people, added requests, and changed my mind. Once our group finally arrived, we really appreciated João's daily report on what to expect and the details for the following day. João arranged for Richardo to drive us from Lisbon to Porto and around, and back to Lisbon. Ricardo was a wonderful driver and guide over the few days we spent with him. Ricardo was so kind and made many wonderful suggestions. We also spent time with Carlos as we toured from Lisbon to Sintra to Oeiras. My husband, who always sits in the front passenger seat, really enjoyed the discussion and the perspective on Portugal's history and current events. Carlos made food recommendations that were spot on. We also spent most of one day on a walking tour with Claudia. We loved learning about a day in the life of the average Portuguese living in the capital city, surrounded by so much history and beautiful structures. We laughed so much with Claudia as her sense of humor aligned perfectly with ours. Everyone with Kimkim proudly shared their beloved hometowns and country with our group, making our time in Portugal feel like more than just a spur-of-the-moment getaway. I highly recommend and trust Kimkim to make all of our trip arrangements in the future, including when we, one day, return to Portugal.

Our guide the first day was very good and responsive to our requests, however she said that we could not go to Sacre Coeur as it was too far out for that tour. She did help us buy our passes for public transportation that day which was helpful and took us to a very nice ice cream place near Notre Dame for scrumptious ice cream before heading out to our hotel. The luncheon cruise on the Seine was very nice. The later visit to the Eiffel Tour was set for 6:30 pm and probably could have been made for an earlier time as the luncheon cruise was over about 3:30 pm. We were not allowed to enter the tower until our time, and it was cold and windy that day with not many options for waiting inside in a warmer place. We did not spend much time at the tower once it was our turn to go up. Wednesday was a tour to Giverny and Versailles with lunch included. I do not know much about what might be available to book from where we were staying at the Marriott Village Disney, but it seems it would have made more sense to book us a tour that left from near our hotel rather than one leaving from Paris at 8:15 am requesting us to be there 15 minutes early. We decided we needed a driver to pick us up at 6 am from our hotel rather than using the public transportation to get there on time. He got us there in plenty of time. We even had time to go to a nearby cafe and have a drink and some food. The booking place was not too impressive. No one was there even after our cafe visit, and we had to stand around on the sidewalk until someone got there who unlocked the door. There were several people also waiting, and each group was given a different color card to designate what van they would take. Our driver was OK, but we encountered a detour that went quite a bit out of the way, so we were late to the restaurant for lunch, and the food (chicken) was very dry. Then the van did not start right away after lunch, but he got it going and we headed to Versailles. The tour of the palace was OK but lots of other tourists and crowded. He told us some things different from what our tour guide three years ago told us. The afternoon was rainy and cold, so we did not go into the gardens. There was not much of a place to get a warm drink and wait out the time until we were to meet at the van. Then we got back to the booking company (Paris Trip, I think was the name. It was located in a small store front.) and no driver to take us back to our hotel was waiting. We had thought we had booked a driver for to and from the hotel, but evidently that is not what Lucie had understood, so my niece got us an Uber which was 100 Euros. Thankfully he was close and got there quickly. Overall, it seemed that Lucie and her colleagues were not as responsive to our needs as the KimKim representative we had 3 years ago was when my sister and I visited Paris.

I truly appreciate your kind words about your guide on the first day—I’m very glad to hear she was responsive and helpful, and that you enjoyed the Seine luncheon cruise and your stop near Notre-Dame. I’m sorry to read that other parts of your trip did not meet your expectations, and I would like to clarify a few points while acknowledging where things felt disappointing.

Regarding your hotel location at the Marriott Village Disney, that you booked, I completely understand how the travel logistics impacted your experience. As mentioned prior to your arrival, this location is really far from central Paris, which can make early departures and return journeys more demanding—especially for tours departing from the city center. We always recommend hotels in the city. We aim to advise on this in advance so expectations are clear, but I’m sorry that the impact of this distance was still frustrating during your stay.

For the Eiffel Tower visit, securing tickets is unfortunately one of the most challenging aspects of planning in Paris due to very limited availability. We always book the best time slots available when reservations open, but we are often constrained by what is offered. I understand that the wait in cold weather was uncomfortable, and I’m sorry this affected your experience.

Concerning the Giverny and Versailles day, I’m truly sorry that the experience felt disappointing overall. These tours are operated from central Paris, which is standard for most providers, and this is why the early transfer was necessary from your hotel. I regret that the meeting point experience and parts of the day (including the delay, lunch quality, and weather conditions) did not meet expectations. Unfortunately, elements such as traffic detours, vehicle issues, crowd levels at Versailles, and weather are outside of our control, but I fully understand how they can impact enjoyment.

Regarding the return transfer, I sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding. The morning transfer had been arranged, but the return journey had not been included in the booking, as per what we discussed. I understand how this may have caused confusion and inconvenience, and I’m very sorry you had to arrange transportation at the last minute.

Finally, I’m sorry to hear that you felt less supported compared to your previous experience, despite my availability before and during the trip. This is certainly not the impression we want to leave, and your feedback is very valuable in helping us improve both our communication and service clarity.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. I truly regret that parts of your trip did not go as smoothly as hoped, and I hope that you still came away with some enjoyable memories of your time in Paris.
